I made a reservation for 8 people at Tartufo over 2 months ago for my brother’s law school graduation dinner. I received a call from the restaurant the morning of, telling me there were going to seat me on the second floor because it was quieter up there and better for larger parties. I thought this was very thoughtful, and was excited the restaurant was helping to make this special occasion even better. When we arrived, they did not sit us on the second floor, but on the first floor, by the door, where it was very noisy, so I was a bit confused by the phone call. There was a big language barrier with out waiter, and our party had a lot of trouble communicating our orders to him, even when we tried pointing to the items we wanted on the menu. He got half of the drink orders seriously wrong, and we had a really difficult time getting anyone’s attention to order, get more drinks, and have someone fill up our water glasses. When my mother received the bill, an 18% gratuity was already included, as it usually is for bigger parties. We were frustrated, but really just wanted this dining experience to be over, so we quickly tried to pay the bill and get out of there. As we sat there for 20 minutes, we could not get anyone to come over and take our credit card for payment. My mother then went to hunt down the maître de so we could pay. She told him that we were having a very frustrating experience with the service, and he said he would have a talk with our server. Two minutes later, our server comes over to my table, and confronts my mother about her saying we did not have a good experience with the service. He continued to argue with her, tell her she was wrong, and tell her that it was the restaurants fault because they were so busy. She tried explaining how she felt about the service to him, and he continued to get angry and verbally attack her. As we tried to leave, he continued arguing with her. When our whole party got up to leave, the maître de came back over and confronted my father, telling him that we were wrong about the service being poor. The waiter then walked up to my brother (the person whose law school graduation we were celebrating) and confronted him about us complaining about the bad service. He was literally stopped at the door on his way out, so the waiter could argue with him about what my mother and father had said about being unhappy with the service. I have never seen such inappropriate behavior by people in a service industry. Having had many people in my family, my brother and myself included, who have worked in either customer service or food service, I have never seen anyone act like the waiter and maître de did. Their behavior was so rude and appalling, that the experience honestly made me feel sick. It was probably the worst overall dining experience that me and my family have ever had, and the terrible attitudes of these 2 people really ruined what was supposed to be a special night. I have never seen adults in a service industry act so unprofessional. They literally stopped us at the door on our way out, after we had paid, to continue to verbally attack us about our complaint. I will obviously never come back to this restaurant, and will never recommend it to anyone. It was a horrifying experience, and it still upsets me to think about. I am so disappointed and angry by this terrible experience.

I would absolutely not go back here ever again. To start the mood of the restaurant seemed very stuck up and snobby, and the service was sub par. But the worst part was by far the meal. I ordered the dish titled "Grilled Seafood", which the menu said came with scallops, calamari, shrimp and some vegetables. I got 2 scallops, very little calamari (which was not very good as it was), and 3 shrimp. The vegetables was just a very small tossed salad with some bitter type of dressing. The worst part is that all this cost... 27 DOLLARS. The meal was not filling at all, the little that I got was not appetizing, and the mood of the restaurant was terrible. I also got desert, and I ordered the "Warm Chocolate Cake." The menu described that the cake came with vanilla ice cream, and it did.....But only about two spoonfuls worth of it. The chocolate cake was warm and was chocolate but was about the size of a fist. This cost 10 dollars, but looking back I wouldnt have paid more then 2.50 for the dessert. My total meal cost 37 dollars and I left the restaurant hungry and not satisfied. I would absolutely never recommend this to anybody.

Tartufo – Newton, MA – 3/17/2016 Yet another great Boston area restaurant! The owners Anna and Dante really go out of their way to make you feel special when you come here… The service is always friendly and the cuisine is always great… For tonight’s appetizer… The shrimp cognac… shrimp, garlic, Evoo, scallions, crushed red pepper and cherry tomatoes… A savory shrimp dish that tastes as good as it looks… Perfect way to prepare the pallet for which would soon follow… For the main this evening be pan seared haddock with fresh tomato and caper sauce served with artichoke and asparagus risotto… A white fish cooked just so… This dish just screams wow! Add in my signature cappuccino and life is good… Anytime I’m in the area, I will stop here for dinner… It’s really that good!…

Haven eaten at restaurants in Boston such as Grille 23, Excelsoir, Radius, Sorellina, and Locke Ober-Tartufo is a Hidden Gem in the greater Boston Area. Not only is the food excellent and beyond authentic, the portions are enormous. . Tartufo is a local favorite and you will see many local individuals that come every night to get an excellent meal and enjoy themselves at the bar. Dante, the owner, spends alot of time to make sure that the food is excellent and worth every penny. If you are from Boston, it is a crime not to have tried this excellent restaurant, and if you are visiting and would like a great meal in a less crowded area-try Tartufo. My favorite dish: THE VEAL. (Best veal Ive ever eaten and Ive tried it three times!!!)

Went there last week and thought the place was overrated. The bread was warm but tasteless. My wife ordered $45 special - veal chop (our waiter never mentioned the price and it was not on the menu so we expected it to be under $30) and it was nothing special. My Lobster Arrabiata was kind of sour and thin on flavor. But the restaurant interior was nice and cozy plus it was close to home. It also had real Italian feeling with some staff from Italy. But they try to get you on overpriced wine, specials, mineral water and cappuccino like you are a tourist. All in all, an OK place but I dont think I will go there again because there are better choices in this price range in Newton Center.

perhaps a good restaurant in 2015. Definitely nothing special in 2017. Overpriced for the quality you get. We tried 5 different dishes. None was anything special. Personnel not so friendly to new customer. They welcomed the usual customers with a smile and greeting but a cold welcome for us as it was our first time. Tiramisu and Warm chocolate cake, each 10$ without any quality. They automatically charged 20% tip. Never going back and suggest you dont waste your money.
