Visiting Boston with my girlfriend. Neither of us has been before. I Yelp brunch spots near the Airbnb in Cambridge for our first meal and Loyal Nine comes up- were excited to go! Walk inside, where one or two parties are seated, and wait to be greeted. A female server with an undercut and glasses looks in our direction but says nothing. We notice a nice looking patio area, so I walk up to the server and politely ask if we can sit outside. Making momentary eye contact with us, she curtly says, "The cafe is through the door," and turns away. Brushing off her unprompted rudeness, I realize the cafe might have a different menu than the main restaurant, and so I ask her. Again turning to us for only long enough to speak, she snaps, with an irritated cadence, "The cafe is through the door. The menu is out there." I tell her "Ok, were just gonna go," and we turn to leave. She says nothing and goes back to one of her tables. I turn to the woman working in the kitchen who had witnessed the entire thing and ask if this is how the restaurant earns its clientele. She tells me it is not, apologizes, and wishes me a happy weekend. Plus one star for her, which brings this place from a theoretical zero to a one. We looked up other places in the area and found City Girl Cafe, which was excellent! Big portions of delicious food served by unpretentious gals in a charming space. Highly recommend.

The food as well as the service was excellent. I have eaten at a lot of restaurants, in a lot of cities. A former industry insider I understand the dishes and have a better palette than the average consumer. How does one not get full of of three courses there? I think its a privileged mentality that is ruining there own experience. industry as well as this culture of hipsters. Its not your Starbucks coffee. Its not expensive if you arent living above your means. The bluefish and brown to the ribs and the lobster were very well thought out plates that left me happy and satisfied. The desserts were thought up by a brilliant mind. From a hoodie and jeans, to tweed jackets and pearls; all are made to feel welcomed. The design is stylish and simple. It is a restaurant and part of the experience is the atmosphere. Pleasing with its subtle uniqueness yet comfortable with itself. I think its one of the best designed drink menus in the area. Its laid out so it can be understood and it not overwhelming with too many choices that are unnecessary. Food menu equally executed well. From the handshake at the door to the hug goodbye you feel as if you are taken in by friends and leave as family.

Loyal Nine is an interesting and overall tasty restaurant. I was lured to this restaurant after reading a review which described the cuisine as "colonial-inspired". While Im not entirely sure I even know what colonial New England food was, I can say that Loyal Nines focus seems to be strongly on only local New England ingredients, with some dishes served in unique ways that I havent seen other restaurants in the area doing. They also catered to me being pescatarian. So if youre a vegetarian or pescatarian, youre in good hands here. I tried the "shared supper" option, which is the chefs tasting. Everything was great with the exception of one dish that I wasnt a fan of (soused bluefish- all I tasted was the bread). Two standouts were the raw oysters which were awesome (two from Maine and two from Massachusetts), and also the poached Rhode Island squid was tasty and prepared differently from any other squid Ive had before.

A review of the cafe only: This is the absolute best coffee shop / cafe in Cambridge. Everything they make is the best of its class. Scones? The best. Muffins? The best. Cold Brew? You guessed it: the best. Their rotating lunch offerings are inventive and delicious (well, the biscuits and gravy combines an excellent biscuit with unusual (for the dish) beef gravy, with too much meat and not enough gravy) and the enormous space offers four--count em, four--different seating options: inside with a/c, inside without a/c (open garage door), outside under cover of canvas shades, and outside in the open air, where two corn hole games provide an alternative to typing away on the laptop.

Very slow service, clearly understaffed, and one of the staff members behind the counter was clearly sick. Will not go back. Have to agree with the person who had to go to MacDonalds afterwards. Chacha Durazo a month ago The best part? When we left. Friendly staff but overpriced, mediocre, hipster "American fare". I think I spent $17 on the seaweed that washes up on the shore. Three of us spent $95 and were not filled. We ended up going to McDonalds nearby to get ice cream. My advice? Recommend this restaurant to someone you dont like.

this coffee shop is AMAZING! If you work from home, start working from loyal nine :) The staff is super nice & the coffee, tea, and lunch offerings are unbelievable. And they have a lot of locally sourced products (their cashew milk, their cows milk). Plus, it is quaintly situated right on a scenic train track in East Cambridge. Definitely stop in & stay awhile! Its the perfect & most peaceful spot to do work or grab coffee with a friend.

Daniel and Rebecca have created a special dining environment at Loyal Nine. The atmosphere is fantastic and the service incredible. Most important, the creativity of the food and drink (updated regularly) creates an experience unlike any other restaurant in Cambridge or for that matter the greater Boston area. Loyal Nine is well worth a visit for dinner or to their cafe for lunch / brunch. And the team is great at hosting private events.

I usually frequent the cafe, which is a bit more affordable than the restaurant and has a lovely open floor-plan with an outdoor patio. In the summer, the wall separating the patio from the interior is taken down, so theres a lot of natural light and fresh air. Its quiet and laid back, and has a small brunch menu, pastries and coffee. The restaurant is more upscale - I have not visited it often enough to write a review.

For a dozen coworkers out for lunch, Loyal Nine was a hit. Everyone enjoyed the food: sandwiches, salads, soups, with extras like house made potato chips and pickles. The hipster fabulousness of the staff was only matched by the selection of coffee brewing methods ($12 for siphon, no joke). Great beer list.
