Wow, the food was great. Make sure you order an appetizer because yes, it took awhile for the meal to arrive. The samosa for only $1.49 was amazing and the platter of pakoras were wonderful. When the main course finally arrived we were pleased. We had both basmati rice and garlic naan with our meals. We all made sure we had meals that included paneer; sublime. I "grew up", young adult, in Vancouver Canada eating with Indian families from many parts of India and I learned to cook and eat Indian food daily. This place had really great, authentic ((duh the owners are Indian) food. When you consider the complaints about it taking awhile to be served when the restaurant is 3/4 full, remember the food is prepared fresh. You dont get perfect basmati rice like they serve from a massive pot of rice cooked hours in advance. Also consider that they have both pick-up service and delivery service going on. Wanted to note also that many of the patrons were Indians, a good sign. If my friend from Italy eats at a local Italian restaurant it means its close enough to home cooking to enjoy! So looking forward to eating here when we visit the Portland area again.

Alert: Avoid Saturday night around 6pm. Very busy with people waiting. Long wait to have order taken, the staff seems a bit overwhelmed. Also with the opening and closing of the entey door the cold breeze comes in making the place less then cozy. So we will see how the food is. Also the people in line look dont look happy and are looking at us perhaps hoping we are done with dinner. I am sure the wait will be worth it. It smells so good and its only been about 50 minutes since we were seated. So cold here. Well the tandoori chicken is here. Ordered half tandoori chicken. Funny the menu said breast, thigh and two legs. Unfortunately it is only half a breast to fit on serving plate. The rest of the food arrived about 5 minutes later. Forgot the beer and chutney. My recommendation: tell the customer that the wait for dinner will be an hour or more and then offer some nan bread during the wait. Come back and check on the customer to see if they want more bread or bring the beer. Stop take out orders if the people in the restaurant have long wait times.

I need negative rating for this restaurants. 1. Waiting time is worst in the world. For vegetable biryani 2 hours waiting. 2. For Thumbs Up, Limca sodas were expired by 2 years before. They just server and make money. 3. They accidentally dropped, shahi paneer curry on my friends shirt, which was hot, and they do not have courtesy to say sorry. And the most funny thing is that, they billed my friend for his food. Poor guy paid. he lost his nice shirt just coming and waited for dinner long time. 4. My experience is more than 5 time in similar manner. 5. Finally, food is not so great. They cook food for 2 days and defreeze them, microwave and server. Thats it. Poor service. Just because an Indian Restaurant - i was going there. But decided never go and visit that place again.

Decided to try the restaurant after reading the reviews. When I got here it was around 3/4 full. Not too bad. Ordered food and waited over an hour for it to come out! Actually still waiting.... Also had only water for drink and waitress have yet to come by for refill or even come by to apologize for the delay. Now Im seeing people seated way after me get their food first. Going down to 1 star. Zero star of possible. If you come by you may see me crumbled up in the corner dead from starvation. Eureka! Food has arrived! Goat curry and rice. And i mean just that! Okay back up to two stars because the goat curry is really good...

Decent food in the Portland area. TIP for Indians...this is mainly a South Indian restaurant. So expect food to taste accordingly. Good sambhar and chutney. The high ratings this place has is from non-indian local population who has not tasted other Indian restaurant food outside if Maine I went for lunch on labor day weekend and was driving down to NY and they had buffet. Not many choices for vegetarians. But the butter checked and methi chicken were delicious. Hotel staff was decent. Its a family owned place so the owners double up as wait staff.

I felt this is the great place for authentic indian meal. I love Indian restaurants and I have been to a few in the maine. However, thanks to TAJ,my search for a really good, authentic Indian restaurant has finally to come an end. I wish I had come across TAJ before. Then I would not have to force myself to finish eating the junk food at other Indian restaurants which I did not like that much, just for the sake of not wasting the food. I loved TAJ Special chicken biryani, Chicken Tikka Masala. A MUST have for Indian food lovers - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The food is excellent and the wait staff very polite BUT I have a huge problem with the empty tables around me being sprayed with Windex and cleaned while I am eating. I am also very sensitive to chemicals. This is the 2nd time I left the restaurant with a Windex induced headache. I mentioned the Windex spray to the waiter when I was there the first time. I forgot this was the Windex restaurant until it happened again this visit. Unfortunately I wont be back. I dont want Windex in my food or n the air I am breathing.

Poor veg biryani .. poor veg schezwan rice.. simply over rated.. My friends who ordered chole & poori felt it was ok .. but nothing special and the poori were not evenly round shape wise .. poor presentation overall.. I think buffet may be slightly better .. maily economical prices would be a consideration in favor of this restaurant.. Overall feels like a poorly run canteen or mess from andhra.. some of the staff (if not all) are also telugu speaking .. No option to give less than 1 star .. hence my rating..

I had the best vegetarian biriyani from this place. I even travelled from Portsmouth, NH to Portland, Maine just to have the biriyani again. It is a family run place, they are friendly but dont expect the most professional service. Again food is cooked properly and it may take some time to come. If you go there with these expectations you will have some truly authentic Indian food. And this place is quite busy. Unfortunately there isnt enough waiting space inside. That is the only complaint I have.

Finally Ive found a place that serves what Indian food should taste like! I had two different entrées (why not when you can bring the rest home and eat it later, right?) Both were amazing! I live about 3 hours away from here, and Im already planning a day trip to Portland, mainly to get some more food from these guys! Words really cant explain how much I enjoyed this food! And the prices are very, very reasonable! They could easily charge more for their food and keep me coming back.

I would rate the lunch buffet 5/5. I remember the price was around 12$ and variety of the food for the price was great. The quality, taste and specially the freshness of the food were remarkable compared to other similar buffets. The staff were friendly, I missed my 60$ adidas jacket in the restaurant, when I went back in the evening they readily recognized me and gave my jacket back. I would definitely visit the restaurant when I am going to be in Portland again.
