Horrible! We were passing through and decided to give the place a try...big mistake! The server appeared to be drunk. He kept touching us, stumbling and forgetting what he was saying. He was nice and kept our drinks full so we tolerated it. I dont know where to start with the food. Awful! First, the kids macaroni and cheese was made with a nacho cheese too as the cheese with no indication on the menu. It had a bit of spice and was no bueno for macaroni and cheese or for most toddlers. We replaced that with French fries which were decent. My husband ordered a steak sandwhich in French bread (at a Mexican restaurant). First, the admitted to taking to the wrong table so it took a long time to get a fresh one to us. When the meal finally arrived, it was a very small steak piece on a seasme seed bun?! We inquired and they told us that they were not selling it well so they no longer ordered the French bread. OK, thanks for the heads up. My husband finally got "jumbo" shrimp with fries. "Jumbo" is evidently a term that can be applied whenever because these shrimp were quite small. They were decent (maybe because he was so hungry by the time he got food). I cannot recall the name of my dish but what I can say is that it had mole sauce on it (supposedly). The sauce literally tasted like a mix of soy sauce, worschestire sauce and chili powder. It was nasty and overpowering! I am not sure what the actual food tastes like to be honest because nothing could be tasted over that. No apologies and no address of any situations! To top it off, as we left, we saw the sign that kids eat free that day...we paid for our kids food. :( That being said, the decor was very nice. I hope that when this place fails that maybe someone can open a place with good food to match the nice decor!

Ive been eating Mexican & Tex-Mex for 40 years, everywhere from Laredo, San Antonio, Colorado, New Mexico, New England, to various locales in Western Europe, and I can assure you that El Maguey ranks among the best for "comfort food" style Mexican. The feather in their cap is that I discovered items on the menu that Ive not seen before. We went for the Sunday brunch and were a bit trepidatious from the outset, since BG has a glut of Mexican restaurants, and this one has sprung up in the old Dennys building. Theyve made a commendable effort at changing the appearance, but it still looks like a converted Dennys. From the outside anyway. Inside is a different story. There is no sign that this has ever been anything other than what it is; a welcoming, comfortable Mexican food restaurant. The menu surprises on our visit were tres leches pancakes and a breakfast chimichanga (admittedly just a fried breakfast burrito, but Ive never seen it done before). The stack of three pancakes was so large and rich, my breakfast companion could only finish a third of it. She didnt even get to attempt the sweet, fried plantains scattered atop the stack. The breakfast chimichanga was stuffed with egg & chorizo, and was heavy on the chorizo (as it should be). It was smothered in melted queso fresco and came with sweet fried plantains, rice, and beans. The queso took the crunch out of the chimichanga but gave the tortilla a new density; firmer than a regular tortilla. I quite liked it. Its safe to say I have found my new "go-to" for Mexican food in BG.

Im giving this place a 1 star review literally because of poor managers. There was a table of drunks right next to us that literally would not be quite. It was so bad that patrons were asking to be moved to the front of the restaurant to get away from them! Not once did their server or a manager step over to ask them to stop yelling and whistling obnoxiously loud until the bartender cut them off. To make things worse someone had to turn the music in the entire restaurant to CONCERT LEVELS to drown them out until the entire table left. The food was just alright but this is by far the WORST dining experience my husband and I have had possibly ever. Well never set foot in the establishment again since they have no respect for their paying customers.

It matters not whether you seek food, drink or wine if your server is Eurayle your experience will be divine. She delivers her fresh squeezed margarita with a smile that will make you want to stay for a while. Order your tacos, burritos or any dish, shell even take your order in Spanish. Whether a local, a tourist or just a passer-by, other bartenders want to be her, but they can only try. Youll gladly give her your gratitude and your money, and melt like the queso when she calls you honey. So stop by and see her as quick as you can, and just like me....Youll be her biggest fan.

This is the best Mexican restaurant Ive ever eaten at period! Chips are hot and the salsa is chunky and tangy, not hot. Ordered the choriqueso for appetizer and it wad amazing! For entree I had Maguey Arroz. Chicken, steak and shrimp on a bed of rice with cheese. Food came out about 3min after we got our appetizer. Great service and clean restrooms and restaurant! You dont want to drive past this place without coming in here! You will regret it!

This place is awesome!!! Best Mexican food Ive ever had. The salsa is the best! Wow, the carnitas rock! You wont need seconds on your drink, I promise. My waitress (Deja) was awesome! Such a cool atmosphere with its rustic theme, and exceptionally clean I must add. How funny it is to me that I had to drive 2 hours from Louisville and accidentally find this place. All of this at great prices in my opinion. I will be back!! Thanks guys!

Food was cold. I am staying at the Microtel hotel and there is no reason for my food to be cold. Burrito was small. Rice was cold. Everything was cold. I paid $14 for my food and I feel cheated. I travel throughout the United States and I always give honest reviews good or bad. This isnt authentic Mexican food. Im upset. I wouldnt come here again if the food was free. Im on Twitter @cubbieblu72

I have tried 7 different mexican places in Bowling Green and many have their merits but not one of them has hands down impressed me like El Maguey. The interior is adorable, the food great, the margaritas AMAZING (& $.99 on Wed), and we came a night with live music from an awesome singer. I will 100% be coming back like every week. This is truely a gem of Bowling Green.

The initial impression is that the overly large portions do not make up for the blandness of the lackluster food. Also the staff appears to be trying hard but seems somewhat ill trained, even people clearing tables will ask "how your meal is?"; which due to constant interruption makes it hard to enjoy your meal or carry on conversation.
