Its time-travel back to the 1800s, where you can enjoy a light & airy diner like something from the time of gaslights and early soda fountains and milkshakes. You GOT to try this legendary place. --------- The Old Mill is basically a sandwich shop, but with REAL sandwiches (the kind youd expect in a real sandwich RESTAURANT, that SPECIALIZES in great sandwiches. Also has usual cafe menu items, soups, salads, etc., and I think some more solid food, too. --------- Fabulously relaxing place, in spite of being right downtown, on the citys busiest street, near the railroad tracks. --------- Sitting down in there just automatically relaxes you. Its hard to explain -- you just gotta EXPERIENCE it. --------- Really nice waitresses and staff (I think its been in the same family for, well, forever), Probably the closest you can get to a home-cooked meal in Wichita. Decent prices for really decent food. The only shortcoming is location -- on the north side of Douglas, just west of the railroad underpass -- so parking is tricky (try St. Francis St., or walk there from anywhere in downtown, as most folks do). --------- Fun place to go with a friend or two. Definitely lets you re-live the "good old days," especially when youre having too many bad ones. Not many restaurants make you happy just sitting in them. This one REALLY does.

Walked in to a blast from the past. Sat down at the soda bar and ordered the Monday blue plate special chicken enchiladas for 8.95. Quick service...5-10 min wait for food. Looking at my food right now. Not a big plate of food. 2 enchiladas, some beans with cheese and some round corn chips. Beans were average. Enchiladas were good. I personally like them a little spicier but for a non-Mexican restaurant cant complain. The chicken inside was too dry though. Add a little heavy cream for moisture , some shredded swiss cheese inside, and some pimentoes for color, and a couple of sliced jalopenoes on top would bring it from a 7 to a 10. After the blue plate special I ordered the brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Brownie was cold so waitress microwaved it for me. Much better! But the ice cream was the real treat. Old fashioned homemade vanilla. Very good. Would come back. One last thing. I walked into the place at 11 and the place was half full. Nobody at the bar. When I left at 11:45 the whole place was full with about 20 people in line. Recommend early or late lunch. All in all, I give the place a thumbs up. Ill be back in the future

Cool legitimately old-style cafe with (i think) original everything from the 30s. We went for lunch on a Monday and it was actually crowded-good sign. We had 3 different sandwiches which were all good but not great. Slightly disappointing, but the salad that came with it was better than I expected & the Ranch was amazing. We had an ice cream soda & a shake, which was nothing to write home about. So 4-stars for atmosphere, 3.5-stars for service, 3-stars for food, and 1-star for the bathroom-you had to actually walk THROUGH the working kitchen to access it! And it wasnt worth the effort. Maybe in the 30s customers didnt need to use the bathroom!? All in all-give it a try for its genuine retro vintage charm but dont expect gourmet food or top notch service. Sorry if that offends, but Im a bit of a foodie and have been around the food block!

I was extremely disappointed the Club sandwich I got there. When I say it was three pieces of bread and a plate of chips for $8 its not far from the truth. One thin slice of ham, turkey and some lettuce. Bacon was the thickest meat on the entire sandwich. Im not sure cheese was even there. The images for the club in the restaurant profile are fabrications as I can see actual meat in the image. For a place to call itself a sandwich shop and serve as close to only bread as one could yet stay in business is surprising. I was there on Wednesday 4/29/2015 and the two guys I was with got Lasagna which had a amazing proportion. They thought it was very funny that their meal cost less and they had too much food compared to my "Baby Club".

I cannot imagine who the person is who gave the Old Mill a bad review. I do not live in Wichita but I have been there dozens of times over many years and never had bad food OR service. Yes, they are very busy and sometimes during peak times there is a wait for a table but that is to be expected in a small place that serves great food. In fact, I think any place with a line of people avidly waiting to eat speaks for itself. To me it is refreshing to frequent restaurants that still have some soul and personality. I have had many of the items on the menu and never have been dissapointed. It is all... TASTY! ;-) The Old Mill is a fun place and well worth a trip!

The Old Mill Tasty Shop is a Wichita institution steeped in rich history going back almost 100 years. This place is packed for lunch, always. I was craving a root beer float from their original, authentic soda fountain and counter service just like the old days. It is simple fare; soups, salads and sandwiches rule the day. I dont have enough superlatives to describe my love the Old Mill. If your business takes you to downtown Wichita, make plans to stop at the Old Mill. I recommend going there before attending a ball game or concert at Intrust Bank Arena, located just a couple of blocks away. Go Now! Enjoy!

Excellent food, outstanding service, and great atmosphere. I sat at the bar/soda fountain (which might explain the service) and ordered the smothered burrito. Despite being there on a Friday at lunch time, I received my food quickly. I ate every last bite and had my glass of water refilled at least two to three times -- without even needing to ask. Would definitely visit again to try a shake and some of the other delicious offerings on the menu.

Didnt see it mentioned (oops now I found 2), someone better say their NY Chicken Salad sandwich is a legendary great entree. Even the side dishes are great. Have one to add a smile to a tough day. Itll win you over too! They have other things that are great; but I come here for the NYCS and it can always be a part of a bigger tradition when I come to town. I hope others find that too...
