On Saturday, April 15, my friend Caroline invited me out to dinner with her and her dad. Without hesitation, I agreed. Delicious, free food? always. He decided to take us out to 715. 715 is an Italian and Tuscan restaurant on Mass street. I have never heard of this place before or seen it, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it turned out for the better. The atmosphere, service, and food quality, makes this one of my new favorite restaurants. I won’t be going here often because I am a broke college student and the prices are fairly high, but whenever my parents come in town, I’ll be making sure we eat here. We got to this restaurant around 5:30pm and with our reservation and were quickly seated. The entire atmosphere of this restaurant was very serene and chill. It was a small space, but they used the best of it. There were dark wooden floors and light wooden chairs and tables, with a black counter tops. The walls were a rustic stone, with artwork and paintings hanging from them. At each table and dining space, there were tiny white candles. These candles, along with small light features that hung low from the celling illuminated the room. This lightening was more dim, but you could still see clearly. Behind the bar, stood the open and visible kitchen. This allowed us to see the chefs cooking the food and smell what they were making. The scent of seasoned meat and bread filled the air. The service was remarkable. Our waitress was very nice and prompt. She gave us space to talk, but was always there when we needed her. She would quickly refill my water and always had our table in the corner of her eye, making sure that we could grab her attention. Even the employees who were not specifically serving us, were welcoming. They all were so pleasant and they looked like they truly enjoyed their job. We first ordered appetizers. We shared the meatballs and roasted dates. The meatballs were 8$ and the roasted dates were 9$. The portions were small, but well worth it. The pork meatballs were very flavorful and soft. I thought they were delicious. As well as the roasted dates. I have never had dates before, but I loved them. They were the perfect combination of sweet and savory. I would definitely recommend trying them. As an entrée, I ordered the pan seared salmon. This dish came with parmesan-saffron risotto, fresh herb salad, and fried prosciutto. This was all for 24$. Again, small portions, but it filled me up and I enjoyed it. The salmon tasted fresh and was moist on the inside, while crisp and seasoned on the outside. The risotto was also nice. It was soft and cheesy, but also very flavorful and went well with the salmon. Caroline and her father both ordered the filet mignon. I do not like red meat, so I did not try this dish, but they both immensely enjoyed it. It came with tuscan potatoes, sweet onion, corn puree, and a balsamic glaze over an 8 oz. fillet, all for 38$. Caroline said that the filet was cooked and seasoned perfectly. After eating these meals, Caroline’s father then offered desert. Happily, I ordered the dark chocolate gelato and Caroline and her father, again, both ordered the carrot cake. The gelato was amazing. I have never had gelato before, but my experience here at 715 makes me want to start eating more gelato. It was creamier and richer than regular ice cream. It was cold, but not too cold where it would hurt my teeth. And the dark chocolate chunks that I would find bits of in the two scoops made it even that much better. I have a big sweet tooth, and their dark chocolate gelato was a perfect end of the dinner treat. I also tried their carrot cake and that was also amazing. It was moist and rich, and had the perfect amount of sweet and carrot flavor to it. Eating at this restaurant was an experience. I felt fancy and the food was delicious. I would not eat here all the time, because of the prices and high end scale, but this is now, definitely, my go-to “night out” fancy restaurant. I’ll just have to make sure I go with someone who will pay for my meal.

My husband and I ate at 715 for the first time about two years ago. I ordered chestnut ravioli and he ordered the steak salad. When my plate arrived, my heart sank. I got five one-bite ravioli for $15. It was very good, but I should have gotten three times as much food for the price. My husband got the steak salad, which was also very good but not worth the price. It was a plate of lettuce with a few small pieces of steak and some shaved cheese. We had to pay for bread and we left STARVING. While we enjoyed the few bites we ate, we felt cheated and vowed never to eat at 715 again. Last night, we decided to give it another try, hoping that there had been enough complaints about the portions that things would have improved. We were wrong. For starters, we ordered the $7 focaccia. For our entrees, I ordered the halibut and my husband got the schnitzel. When my plate arrived, again I was disappointed. I received a small piece of fish, maybe four bites worth, with about half a handful of greens. My dish was again very good, and the greens with roasted fennel and prosciutto were a great complement to the halibut. But for the $25 I paid for my plate, I should have had three times as much food. My husbands schnitzel was slightly more filling, but again we left STARVING and had to immediately go eat somewhere else. We will not be eating at 715 again, which is a shame, because they really do have some good dishes.

Unbelievably poor quality. The atmosphere was ok and my appetizer (the prosciutto) wasnt too bad and was reasonably priced. This is where the positive things I have to say about this place ends. First, we were served tepid tap water in tiny (4 oz?) glasses. There wasnt even ice! Then, we received our entres. I had the spinach and ricotta tortellini and my girlfriend had paradele bolognese. I got five tortellinis for $15 that were roughly 3 inches across and were almost completely flat. My appetizer was bigger and it tasted like undercooked noodles. The bolognese was lean hamburger with tomato paste with undercooked noodles and cost about the same. I could have made better food for under 5 bucks in my own kitchen and have it be twice the size, filling and good. The staff faked a British accent on the rare occasion that he wasnt ignoring us. Look, there are three things that a restaurant can do to make something worth it; make it good, reasonable price and make it quick. 715 failed on every single one of these. Maybe this is one of those places where the food speaks for itself, but my food said "Im lonely." DONT GO HERE.

The idea behind 715 is certainly better than the execution... (promoting local farm raised fresh foods.) 2:45 pm, and there are no tables waiting. Server: "Do you know what youd like... or should I give you a minute?" me: "I want the Local Chicken Salad but please skip the onions". Server: "Its all already mixed in." me: "oh rats! Okay, in that case you better give me a few minutes." (FWIW, mixed in onions is a fair way to move orders on the line in the kitchen...not unreasonable) me... scans menu. What? The 715 Green salad mixture looks fine... I wonder why I couldnt just have them make The Local Chicken... Ill ask waitperson... I guess Ill presume even though the restaurant is empty... they wont accomodate a salad greens swap like that, because (s)he didnt offer? No matter... another translation of term "wait staff" apparently... waited 10 minutes... no server. Got it. Bye Bye...
