Not going to lie...my expectations werent very high stepping into Back Alley Smokehouse in Carlisle. Tiny place, reminiscent of the early days of Battles BBQ in Ames in size and ordering style. I ordered the beef brisket sandwich and smoked corn bread...hands down the best brisket Ive ever had...sorry Boss Hawgs and Machine Shed, Ive previously yelped of my love for your brisket, but this beats all Ive ever had before, from Charleston, SC to KC, hands down the best. :)

I was astounded at how delicious the BBQ sandwich was, how tasty, and how much meat piled onto the bread. I dont even like bbq. But this place smells wonderful to enter, and the sandwich I ate was amazing. Very tiny place, but the owner told me he was expanding to include the shop area next door, so that should up his business. I highly recommend this charming eatery.

This place its great. Its not huge, but very popular. Their smoked meat is very flavorful. The pulled pork was tender and juicy, however, their brisket was tough. The brisket had great flavor and the server apologized for the toughness. She offered to serve me more pulled pork and invited me to come back and try their brisket. I will definitely be back!

If you havent been to Back Alley Smoke House yet, you are missing out. Best BBQ meats in the area. You would think you were in the South. Gourmet soups, and the smoked corn muffins could be an entire meal. Great eating, and best kept secret in Central Iowa. Im going to recommend that Jane and Michael Stern of Roadfood stop by and do a radio show.

While the brisket and pulled pork were awesome, the ribs came out SMOTHERED in sauce! Not a fan of that, how can you tell how they taste? Id rather have my choice. The creamed corn was pretty sad and over all the food in general was just warm, and some barely that, at best. Not sure Id come back.

It is OK to me bc there is not much kids Manu there is only 3 or4 thing with is bad the Mexican please has better service than u and had more kids food than u so hope u read this and other people so they wont wait 1hour and have nothing good to eat there

This is one of the gems that you find in a small town with a good atmosphere and great food. You wont leave hungry and there always seems to be something new to try. If you suggest to a group of people to have lunch at Back Alley, no one will say, "no".

This place is about the best little barbecue place around. It has friendly service and great food. The backlash has a great bit of kick to it. My major complaint would be that there is very little seating so need to go early to miss the crowd.

Simply one of the best BBQ restaurants I have ate at. I have been to all of the popular ones in Des Moines, Kansas City, and Memphis and Back Alley can easily compete. Staff is friendly. Ambience is great. Love what youre doing.

Come hungry! Generous portions of food. 2/3 order of ribs was enough for me. Great tasting BBQ, beans were good. Not many g-free options, unless you order your sandwich without a bun--but meat tastes great without the bun.

Great service, good try at barbecue. The smoke was so strong and acidic, the cuts were good. The raspberry BBQ sauce as others have mentioned is really good. The creamed jalapeno corn is amazing!

Feels and looks like a an East Tennessee meat smokin joint. Good food and the spicy sauce is SPICY. I recommend the half brisket/half pulled-pork sandwich. And the coleslaw is good, too.
