Wheel House feels older than it is, in a good way. Though the restaurant only started a few years ago, it brought with it Ankeny history and a feel for the town. The location is where the bowling alley used to be, and the bar is made of the old bowling lanes. The decor is eclectic and classic, and while the space is mall, it hardly feels over crowded. The bar is great to chat with the bartender while its slow, and booth comfortably fit four. The egg roll pizza is a personal favorite, and they always have good beer on tap, though the types change. They try to be a cyclist bar, being a few blocks from the head of the High Trestle Trail, and are pretty good for bikes - there are bike racks and a pump, and the windows allow overly-cautious people to see their chained bike from their seat. This is perhaps the only restaurant on the far west side of Ankeny, but if we could only have one, Wheel House is solid.

Went in last Saturday, as I live in the neighborhood, and hadnt been in there for awhile. Have had dining experiences there in the past, nothing exceptional, but nothing bad..... until now. Ordered a pitcher of beer, which arrived 3/4 beer and 1/4 foam.....when I mentioned that to the waiter, he returned with a draft glass half full of beer, sat it down and left. We ordered a sausage and black olive pizza, which, upon arrival, sported low enough numbers of black olives that they literally could be counted (maybe 20 small pieces), and if there was, indeed, sausage, it was not visible, but perhaps a piece or two there as it did smell, but not taste, a bit like sausage. All in all, 3/4 of a pitcher and a glorified cheese pizza for $30......not to return..

With all the positive reviews, I can only guess that they come from the regulars (The alcoholics that swell drinks from noon till night and drive home drunk) and have been paid off. The owner tries hard to give a good customer experience but he sells an inferior product. Seriously, youre better off eating a frozen Red Baron pizza than eating a Wheelhouse pizza. I ordered a thin medium cheese pizza. I got cardboard that cost $10.00. I peeled the thin layer of cheese off half the pizza and added it to the other half. Im not kidding when I say there was no sauce under the cheese! The owner even asked If I wanted a box. He couldnt even see what a horrible product he sells. This is the third time at Wheelhouse and will be my last.

It is obvious that this establishment is not equipped to handle a slightly large party. The food was decent but many of our orders got lost in the shuffle and came out late. There was no apologies/compensation for the wait or inconvenience. Then when it came time to split the ticket our waitress picked a fight with a woman in our party for no specific reason? The waitress then proceeded to not speak to the woman and refused to help sort out the check situation. The whole experience just seemed very unprofessional and the food was not good enough to make us ever want to go there again.

The place is ok. They have a small menu. Obviously mainly pizza. We did a personal cheese pizza for our daughter and ended up splitting it. Also tried there egg rolls. Egg rolls were pretty decent with the sauce they had. They have some local brews on tap (exile brewerys gigi and ruthie). I wanted a Gigi but they were out. Ruthi is good to though. Service wasnt that great. Our waitress was nice, but despite the fact it wasnt busy, she forgot our drinks, and wouldnt get rid of our dirty dishes (I wouldnt normally care, but we were on the patio, and the tables are small out there).

My parents and I were craving pizza in Ankeny last week so we decided to give this place a try. It definitely has a bar feel to it, but the pizza is out of this world! We ordered the egg roll pizza with rotisserie chicken instead of sausage, and it was one of the most unique and delicious pizzas I have ever had! As for the service, a really nice guy said he was a friend of the owners and was watching it for the night. He was very friendly and was great with keeping our drinks filled! Overall, check this place out and order the egg roll pizza!

I find wheelhouse Pizza to be an amazing place to meet new friends and acquaintances. Because thin crust pizza is not something you find regularly it is a great establishment to go as their pizzas are made to order rolled out as soon as they receive it so the dough is extremely fresh. Not only do they have a lot to offer during the winter the summer months bring tons of activity. Its a great meeting place for cyclist who wanted to take the trail anywhere around Ankeny. Everyone is always so friendly and happy there

Walked into this place on a whim. It was sort of late, but the owner still made us a pizza (which was fantastic!) The owner is very friendly, the atmosphere is very relaxed, the service was outstanding, and the establishment is very clean. The liquor selection was better than most if the bars I have been to in Des Moines! I will definitely come back for some Egg Roll Pizza and recommend this place to all my friends and family!

Stopped in on 5/2/15 during the afternoon with my family and had a great experience. Our waitress/bartender had a great attitude and made us feel like we were regulars. Pizza and appetizers were great and served quickly. We will not hesitate to go back again.

I come here all the time. To me, this is the classic neighborhood bar that happens to serve amazing pizza.
