My visit was my first and only visit to the Runcible Spoon. My son, a full-time student at IU, recommended the restaurant for breakfast. Being a pleasant morning, we opted for outdoor seating on the pleasant patio. While not meticulously maintained, it had that Bloomingtonesque charm and character that is very inviting. We were served coffee right away as we decided on our breakfasts. Our cups were never empty and our water glasses always full. We both decided on the salmon (lox?) hash. Breakfast arrived within 5-10 minitutes. It came with wheat toast and a dill sour cream on the side. I opted for an egg over easy on the top and it came garnished with capers. It was delicious and I was able to finish every bite. Our server was very friendly and helpful earning every bit of her tip. My son brought me inside for a peek at the richly appointed interior. Wrapped in dark wood paneling with old books and antiques all around. It was much larger inside than I would have imagined. Finally, as parking is an issue in Bloomington, we parked about a block and a half away at metered parking. No big deal, but be aware. I recommend giving the Runcible Spoon a try.

When I go to eat at the Runcible Spoon, my biggest worry is the service. Overall, the food is a bit on the high side price wise. Ive eaten there 50+ times, and each one has been hit or miss. I.e. people coming in after me and being served by my waitress first. The key here is that in order to ensure quality, you must use their numbering system when you make a selection. You will wait forever for a coffee or water refill (if you get it). Most of the employees appear unkept, unclean and very au natural, not in a way I consider food service appropriate... The last time I was there, the waitress brought the wrong dish. When I told her that I had ordered the salmon eggs Benedict, she proceeded to explain that, in fact, what I had ordered was a number 9. I just said "Okay, thanks" and she then asked if I would like to exchange it. I said "No, thank you." and then spent the rest of the meal wondering why my glasses were both empty. She is lucky my girlfriend was along, else wise shed have no tip at all. Avoid this place if your want a relaxed breakfast that isnt rushed.

Runcible Spoon is a Bloomington classic with great food, but mediocre service. That seems to be typical in this town, but its especially worth mentioning for this restaurant. They always seem to be understaffed, and Im guessing that has something to do with the management of the place. When I went today, after asking for silverware twice, a confused looking waiter came back with 1 spoon for my guest and I, each having a cup of coffee, telling me that they were out of spoons. Youre the "Runcible Spoon" - how do you manage to run out of spoons? Luckily, the food more than makes up for the so-so service. I would go as far as to call it the best breakfast in Bloomington, and as such, this joint is often frequented by partygoers in this college town the morning after.

Im in Bloomington for business and Ive been to a handful of restaurants and cafes and this is by far the best one yet! Word to those coming for the firat time, you grab your own menu and then seat yourself. I had a cheese and potato omelet with toast and a cafe mocha. The potatoes were deliciously seasoned and the cheese was great. I compare this dish to the potato and cheese omelet I had at Uptown, which was very bland. The cafe mocha was a generous portion and delicious. The staff was attentive and polite. I think I have found my go to Breakfast spot in bloomington.

Love The Spoon. Its a cozy, warm, and welcoming atmosphere with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The food is always great. From the burger and steak to the full wonderful breakfast selections (served all day) you cant go wrong, not to mention the exquisite coffee and tea selection. Also the roast their own coffee there on site so if youre like me pick up a pound or two and take it home with you, theres quite the variety, same goes for the tea. I eat here at least once a week if not more, so I highly recommend you visit The Spoon.

The Runcible spoon is a perfect example of a restaurant that is successful not because of the food or service but because of the location. My experiences of the spoon is one of poor service the moment they get just a little busy, and with gross amount of inconsistency of the food between visits, food being over seasoned; under seasoned, coffee lukewarm fruit placed on top of pancakes then in them then out of them again. There is a chance when going here that the food and service will be good but only a chance and not the standard.

Ate here for dinner after looking at some Google reviews... The setting is the only thing going for this place. The service was disinterested if not downright angry, and the food, while cheap, was pretty much right off the Cisco truck. I had the pork medallions (WAY overcooked) and she had what appeared to be a prefabbed frozen burger. Plenty of better options for dinner in Bloomington. Never tried breakfast here, so maybe thats their bread and butter. No way well be back for lunch or dinner though.

The Runcible Spoon is a beloved local eatery with a casual atmosphere and a variety of great food, including breakfast all day, vegetarian options, and at least one vegan option. They have a small selection of beers on draught and are well-known for their gourmet coffee and espresso drinks. The service is known for being... creative... but youll always get your food, and the prices cant be beat. This restaurant is a tried and true standby for anyone looking for a great meal and charming ambience.

Ive eaten here probably 100 times over the years. The breakfast food is very good, but the dinner food is just okay. The biggest issue is really the service. There are some very good waiters/waitresses as well as some who could be politely described as "surly." Not knowing whos going to be there on a given night, its a crapshoot. This place has a lot going for it -- the menu, the ambiance, the beer specials, etc. -- but when the service is as unpleasant as it often is, its just not worth it.

Absolutely atrocious service, waiter threw the bill on the table about a minute after we were served our food. Grabbed my plate the second I put my fork down after my last bite without asking. Very slow service that is spread out around several employees, very fast service the second you are served your food (hint: they want you to leave). And for the quality of food, not worth doing the tiptoe dance. Spend your money elsewhere, you can get better service at a hot dog stand.
