If youre craving some decent brunch in the Southport Corridor, then head to Southport Grocery and Cafe! They have a nice rotating menu that has many fresh and locally sourced items. Although, prepare for at least an hour long wait on the weekends, as the restaurant is small, but they do a good job of turning over the tables. What I love about SG is their coffee, I dont know what they brew here, but its hot, fresh, and delicious. They give you a carafe for the table, and frequently check on it to make sure that its full. As for the food, Ive had some hits and some misses. One of my favorite indulgences recently was the grown up poptart that we split for the table. There were two layers of dough, a layer of marscapone cheese (one of my favorites!) nestled in with blueberries and walnuts. It definitely whet our appetites and was a great value at $5. Ive also enjoyed the Southern omelette which is a HUGE portion and filled with pimento, red onion, and small chunks of sausage, leaving one full and satisfied. Conversely, some of SGs sides leave a lot to be desired, such as their side of bacon which is overpriced for what you get, which is four small, greasy slices that anyone could make (better) at home. Their potato hash isnt the greatest, which many brunch items are served with. I feel that SG is one of the better brunch places for the Lakeview area, but Chicago is loaded with an insane number of brunch establishments, so nothing really sets SG aside in my opinion.

I didnt eat all this food! But I did try everyones food! It was sooooooooooo good! Very fresh and simple! The hash was awesome! The biscuit was really good with the vanilla butter that came with the Cupcake Pancake! Oh, dont forget to add the berry jam! The Cupcake Pancake dont need syrup it is sweet and the vanilla butter taste like whipped cream, I have no idea how they did it! But you can see the vanilla bean in the butter. I tried to French toast it was awesome! It made me curious about having the stuffing of cream cheese and fruit! Ok, so I ordered the Veggie Quiche which was good, the crust was so buttery and flacky! The salad had a simple vinegar based dressing. The Bloody Mary was kinda sweet, so I asked for them to make it dirty, it also has a little kick of spiciness to it! Enjoy! Note the space is small but charming! Try the rice crispy treat, just the right level of sweetness!!!

A very intimate cafe, the tables are close to your neighbors but that didnt bother me any, although it is something to take note of. We waited about an hour after getting our name in (Sunday lunch), and once we sat down service was timely and accurate. All the staff we dealt with were very friendly. The cafe has quite a modern feel, very minimal, with small glasses, only a fork per person, and white paper table cloth, which is replaced after each party. The food was tasty. I got some Mexican egg/chicken/tortilla/salsa dish which wasnt as filling as I hoped but did the trick. Everyone I was with was happy with their selections, which also included a brie/spinach/mushroom sandwich. I would certainly recommend Southport Grocery & Cafe, mainly because its just a fun place to eat and spend some time chatting over a meal.

I live right next-door to this wonderful breakfast place and my boyfriend always begs to go there. He gets the Bread-pudding pancakes, which are as decadent as they sound, topped with cinnamon-sugar and served with vanilla anglaise. I get the Southern Omelet filled with pimento cheese and sausage served with a browned-butter biscuit. Everything is great, I just wish we didnt have to wait as long everytime we go in, because everyone in the neighborhood seems to know how great the food is too. Its super quaint with a clean polished feel and there is a counter to pick up other items like the cupcakes- which are delish! We tend to go in the summer when the patio portion out front is open, so there is more of a chance to grab a table quickly.

The food is excellent and the service is generally good. They have an excellent solution for long line waits. Give your name and mobile number and they text you a link so you can leave to walk around the different Southport shops while you wait. The link shows you your place in line and expected wait and is updated frequently. You will also get a text when you should head back to be seated. The major drawback to this place is the very small size. They exacerbate this by cramming too many tables in, as well as a very small grocery section. If they removed just one table, they could increase the distance between the remaining tables and allow people to move around more easily and comfortably.

Do not expect to show up here and get a table the minute you arrive. Theres a reason theres a wait - you, along with everyone else in the city, is waiting in line for some of THE BEST breakfast creations in the city. The freshness of the food is second to none and creativity makes brunch a very fun experience. Id personally recommend the biscuits and gravy. Scratch biscuits smothered in a thick southern style gravy makes this meal perfect for soaking up whatever you did last night. The service has always been great, and usually, theyre more than willing to go out of their way to make sure everything is perfect. If I mention secret supper, is it still a secret?

Southport Grocery and Cafe is a unique place everyone in the area should go to at least once. They offer up very unique delicious foods and have shelves of interesting spices and foods on your way out. It is a tad expensive, but well worth it. It is a very popular place and gets very crowded most of the time. I ordered the bread pudding pancakes and highly recommend them to anyone going here. They are incredibly delicious! I am pretty sure you can order anything on the menu and feel like you made a good choice. On our way out, we bought one of their award winning cupcakes. I really didnt like the cupcake. Haha.

Overall: Delicious, charming, and charming, brunch doesnt get much better! The good: Superb tasting food, the quiche was fantastic and the coffee cake was well done. The variety of the menu puts a fun twist on brunch. Im sure the non-breakfast options are great. Charming atmosphere and also tons of to-go bakery items and bakery spices and goods. The bad: Small space, especially if the outside is closed. Tight squeezes. Service can be hindered due to that. Menu, while great, good of had a few more options. Long wait Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Food: 10/10

Snowy cold day in Chicago and I dont have to work, had to head to Southport to get my bread pudding pancakes. Since I got there after 2 I started with a glass of wine and delish butternut squash soup and had my solo bread pudding pancake for dessert! To top of that on the way out they gave me two free frozen pints of soup to take home. The new floors and countertop also look great! I can never get enough of Southport, the food, service and people are great. They even donated 10 dozen cupcakes for a gala I was helping with. Thanks Southport Grocery!!!

I love this place. I work at a boutique on Southport, and frequently recommend Southport Grocery to shoppers. But I have to share what I just learned, in hopes that they will change this policy. I called this morning (a Sunday) to place an order for pick-up. Well, during "patio season" on the weekends, they will not take to-go orders. What??? It makes no sense. I was so looking forward to the bread pudding pancakes, but I guess because I dont want to spend an hour and a half waiting, I dont deserve them. Guys, this is a super stupid rule. Change it.
