Hot Woks Cool Sushi kind of wins just because its less than a block away from the office. If distance and time were not factors, then Id just be smart and head to a real Japanese restaurant. This place is kind of like a mall food court. There seems to be food from all parts of Asia. that means that you can get some miso soup, a plate of pad see ew, a side of sushi, and finish it off with some green curry. How that beings to make sense, boggles my mind. If anything, this brings up the red flags, signaling that this place is geared towards a certain clientele. From a venue standpoint, Hot Woks isnt that bad. Theres a full bar and plenty of seating downstairs. If it gets busy (lunch hours), then there is 2nd floor where there are even more tables. For the times that Ive been here with coworkers, weve never had to wait more than 2-3 minutes for a table. Now before I get into the food, the service is of something to be noted. It is pretty damn slow. If you think that you can make it in and out of here within an hour, think again. Even ordering sushi or something generic like teriyaki chicken, youre left to wait a good 20 minutes or so until youre served. With that out of the way, if youre expecting to be wowd or have a satisfying meal, then Hot Woks probably isnt the best place to go to. Granted, their portions are decent, but that doesnt mean that the food is good. For lunch, they do have special bento boxes for about $12-15 depending on whether or not you choose chicken, beef, or salmon. In the bento box, you have your standard items: California roll, salad, miso soup, entree, and tempura. The teriyaki chicken was just overly too sweet, and if there wasnt rice, I would have just gotten a sugar rush eating this thing. The tempura was ok, but still fried for too long of a period. The layer was too thick, and just overshadowed the meat and veggies that it was supposed to enhance. California rolls, well, you cant really mess that one up. For sushi, I did get the hamachi, tako, and unagi. They were alright in the sense that it didnt taste rotten, but then again, at $2.50 a piece, the quality could have also been a little better. Yes, I know that there really isnt great Japanese in the Loop. However, that doesnt mean that you should lower your standards to eat here. If youre with coworkers, then thats a different story, but in that case, Id rather eat Chipotle instead.

I was there with an out of towner last night. We placed our order which included Spring Rolls. As I went to eat a piece of the Spring Rolls, I noticed something that looked like it was crawling. I didnt want to believe it. Perhaps it was some rolling dust on the white plate. No, it was actually a tiny spider that crawled out of the vegetables. Not wanting to make a scene, we called the waiter over and showed him the crawling spider. He then called the woman that I suppose was managing. She asked us if we wanted new Spring Rolls! My dinner partner told her no but we did order a couple other things. I wanted to leave but he was tired, hungry and didnt want a scene. I thoroughly examined each little thing I ate at that point. So the dinner experience no longer enjoyable. It became a matter of satisfying your hunger at your own risk. At the end, of dinner they presented him with the bill (showing the cancelled Spring Rolls) but NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY! I know why people use cell phones to take pictures of everything, these days. He is a somewhat quiet guy but ALL CLOSED EYES ARENT ASLEEP! They should not have charged him at least. That was a true Chicago embarrassment. Did they not wash the vegetables?

I am a die hard fan of Asian food. My mom and I walked out of the Art Institute and were looking for a place to eat for dinner, and it was so convenient to walk right across the street : ). Since I have been there I will not order from any other asian restaurant!! They honestly dont compare. The staff is extremely friendly, the service is amazing, the prices are perfect for anyone, and the food is perfect. If you are a fan of orange chicken you need to try it here it is non comparable and you wont regret it : ) It was a packed Friday night and I must say they were on top of everything. There was no wait for a table and our appetizers were served quick and before we finished our main dishes were arriving at our table. They definitely know what they are doing. I fell into heaven and so did my mom. If you are thinking about where to go to eat, go here you will thank me later!!

Ive eaten here before and the Bento Boxes where my lunch time favorite. Recently I had been craving something similar to Sushi Citys Godzilla Roll so I tried the Fukudome signature roll from here. Id argue that it was NOT a jumbo roll. I was a bit disappointed, the Godzilla roll is a JUMBO roll - you cant fit a slice in your mouth with a single bite (unless you have a huge mouth). This "jumbo" roll seemed just slightly (if at all) larger than Id expect a "normal" roll size to be. In fact we had other rolls from Blue Ginger and they were larger than this roll. It was good, just a bit disappointing to pay $13.95 expecting a good sized roll and not getting it (the Godzilla roll is 13.95 at Sushi City and much MORE food). Id say $13.95 or less is best spent on the Bento Boxes (they are the better deal IMO).

Very poor service. We were seated outside, server/host that sat us brought menus and water then never returned. We had to go up and ask again for service. A different server came out and finally took our order. When the food arrived my friend was missing his whole entree. The server said it will be right out. Me and my other friend finished our whole meal, waited and had to go up again and ask for the bill. Right about this time his simple order or General Tsos chicken finally arrived. We got it to go. Mistakes happen, but the worst offense is there was not even an apology or acknowledgment of this poor customer service. The menu has a decent selection and prices are reasonable for Chicago. None of our entrees were very warm however. It was not very busy. Will not be returning.

The food is really good. Love the ambiance. My only complain is that the asian waitresses began to takk about us in their language, even though they were NOT the ones waiting our table! I know it was about the tip because they were not subtle at all as they looked at the check. It was upsetting because I was waiting for the waiter to come back and break a twenty so I can give him a good tip in cash! Poised me of and let them know it was not ok to be so rude! What is it to you!? He wasnt upset! Nor was he done yet! We express we were thinking about changing our minds and getting something to go separately. Other than that, Ive had very pleasant experiences here and the food is worth trying!!! Ambiance is just fantastic, so intimate, relaxing and chic. Very spacious.
