West Egg has made itself into one of the top brunch places in Atlanta. A few years back it moved to a new and larger location on the Westside down Howell Mill which we are so grateful for because now West Egg can be featured in the Atlanta Coffee Scene! The larger location allows it to double as a restaurant and a cafe, so you have options, and good ones I must say. The menu here features an interesting mix of brunch food with a southern spin--plenty of pimiento cheese, hot sauce, and Coca-Cola to go around. The coffee is superb and the baked goods are made fresh on the spot. Read on! Atmosphere- Its similar to Highland Bakery in the post-modern hipster way. The high, unfinished ceilings and concrete floors lend an open and industrial feel to the place, yet the space is perfectly designed so that you dont feel exposed. It remains cozy thanks to the comfortable seating, this massive curtain that sections off the restaurant from the cafe area, and the expertly chosen lighting. Seating options are plentiful, so determine your reason for dining before entering. Are you there to study? Sit inside at the shared table in the work nook, complete with a pencil sharpener and West Egg pencils. Brunch- inside the main dining area or outside on the patio. Libations? Take a seat at the bar and try out one of those cocktails that have caught my eye, or get a draft beer. Or maybe you are there for your morning cup of coffee. Well its perfect for that too. As you can see, its hard to go wrong here. West Egg is open early and stays open until 10pm. Coffee- West Egg serves up the Bohemian Blend of Batdorf & Bronson coffee, making their coffee excellent. Anand got hooked immediately and now orders it online to brew at home. If you are staying it will be served in a bottomless mug which a server will refill for you at any time. They also offer a few other interesting coffee creations, along with the standard espresso drinks. Service-The people here are friendly, unpretentious, and they know their stuff. They give off a laid back vibe but remain fast and effective at their jobs. A word of warning--West Egg is extremely popular on the weekends around brunch time and the cafe is unusable at this point as it becomes the queue for a table. Yes, you can absolutely get a coffee while you wait but its packed so we recommend that you avoid peak hours if you so desire the relaxed cafe atmosphere that is conducive to deep conversations, reading a good book, working, etc. Location-West Egg holds a extraordinary spot in West Midtown. This up and coming design district offers excellent shopping and eating in a very artistic and walkable area. We urge you to explore the scenic neighborhood as new shops continue to pop up on a monthly basis. Also note that there is plenty of free parking in the deck behind West Egg. Legitimacy- They serve up local, fresh, quality coffee and their bakery has its very own pastry chef who prepares all the baked goods in-house daily. The menu has options for morning, noon, and night with very tempting specials. And there is a bar for cocktails and draft beer. They offer it all in a strategic way so that it doesnt come across as a tacky catch-all place. *Look to their website for specials and events such as trivia Thursdays and Burger and Pint night Wednesdays.

After reading great reviews about West Egg cafe, and reading that they had a gluten free menu, we decided to try it out while on vacation. We were advised that the wait would be 35-45 minutes, which was fine, considering that it was Saturday mid-morning. However, after 50 minutes, we were still not called, and had seen multiple parties that arrived after us be called. When we asked the host how much longer the wait would be, he said we were next. However, after waiting another 10 minutes, and seeing 2 large parties be seated, we asked if our name had been skipped. The host then said that they wanted to seat the 2 large parties that were before and after us on the list. After an hour and 5 minutes, we were finally seated, with a very flippant "sorry" given to us. The gluten free menu was small, but adequate, and the food arrived pretty quickly. The coffee was bitter, the iced tea tasted very old. I ordered the black bean cakes with eggs and gluten free potatoes. The black bean cakes were actually pretty tasty, however, the gluten free potatoes had no flavor at all. Overall, the food was just average, and while the wait staff was efficient, they were not overly friendly. The decor was nice enough, and they did have corn hole outside to play while you wait. Normally, I would have mentioned something to the manager if a dining experience was not satisfactory instead of writing a review, however, no one ever came to our table.

Terrible service. I was sorely disappointed after hearing amazing things. We sat at the bar, and our server/bartender was new, but nice. I could tell he was overwhelmed but NONE of the other staff was helping him at all. They all just congregated behind the bar goofing off, putting their hands all over each other, laughing. No one checked on us to see if we were ready to order, and finally fifteen minutes later we had to flag the bartender down. My friend sat her cup of coffee on the edge of the bar for a refill and TWENTY MINUTES later, still not a single person had stopped to check on us, even though at least ten employees passed by, including the manager, looked directly at it and walked away. No one stopped until she grabbed a coffee pot and started to refill it herself and they perked up and rushed over. Her salad was a soupy mess, which they did replace, but we were seriously disappointed. Then some girl named Kelly sat at the bar next to us and everyone rushed over like she was the queen bee to wait on her hand and foot. No idea who she was, but it was obvious she was receiving the royal treatment. The staff completely changed and everyone became friendly and attentive to her, while we were sitting right next to her being completely ignored. Needless to say, the food is decent, and the environment is cool, but the unpleasant service makes it completely not worth the time wasted.

Went here on a Saturday morning. When we drove past we could see lots of people waiting. We went inside and as we were about to put our names on the waitlist with the hostess, we noticed people leaving the bar area. We asked if we could sit there and she said sure. She cleaned the two spots for us and we got seated immediately. Our waitress was very friendly. I ordered the Black Bean Cakes and Eggs with Garlic Grits and my fiance ordered The Blue Plate. Both of us very much enjoyed our meals. The black bean cakes had amazing flavor and the salsa and sour cream really set it off. The only downside to this place is that you cant order cocktails before a certain time. They have a menu with lots of great breakfast/brunch cocktails but if you go too early you cant indulge. Since I couldnt get a cocktail I opted for the Spicy Hot Chocolate (not sure if this is the exact name) and it was delicious. Service and food were great and we would definitely return.
