Bummed, I really want to like this restaurant. I live right around the corner, can walk there in less than 3 minutes, and it would be great to have a fantastic neighborhood brunch spot so close. But alas, my first visit was on a Sunday morning around 11:30 and it was a disappointment on several levels. Heres the breakdown. Downsides: 1) A half dozen flies zipping around our table to the point where I started swatting them with my napkin. 2) My traditional benedict was so salty I couldnt eat it. 3) They charge you for syrup - $0.25/oz. or $32.00/gallon. 4) They sneak charge you to add pancakes instead of toast or english muffin, and its $4.00. 5) They triple charged us for coffee, thank goodness I checked the bill. 6) My wife was 9 months pregnant and ordered her eggs Over Hard, noting how pregnant she is (pointing to giant baby belly), yet her eggs came out runny. 7) Toast wasnt warm at all, not even enough to melt the butter. This was all at one meal. Yes, it was busy and maybe their fourth week after opening, but for someone who has run a restaurant before, it should be more buttoned up. I really want this place to succeed, so Ill return, but one more strike and theyre out for me.

Im positive Folk Art will quickly become one of my go-tos for brunch/breakfast. Usually when I pass this place on the weekends, there are lines of people waiting outside so I was excited to walk up and be seated right away. Or, seat myself, I should say. Before 11 on weekdays, you can sit where ya like. The breakfast menu consists of so many delicious sounding items! From breakfast sammiches to signature dishes to build-your-own omelettes and benedicts. I settled on some eggs with spinach and mushrooms and a side of hash browns topped with caramelized onions and pimento. Hash browns with caramelized onions and pimento cheese, yall! I love that you can customize your hash browns with various toppings. They were cooked nicely with the right amount of crispiness and the onions and cheese sent it over the top for me. Ive also tried the tofu fried which was a mix of onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, pesto, and spinach with fried tofu. You can add eggs as well. I love their setting, a lot to look at and take in. Very homey and the covered patio-type area is cool. I cannot wait to return to try more of the breakfast menu and those damn hash browns.

A friend suggested we try this restaurant and I must say it was a welcoming surprise. I love going to those known unknown hidden gems and this was definitely one of them. I parked on the side street because I think you had to pay for parking in the lot. On the outside, it looked very trendy and hipster. Upon entering, it was more. From the smell of the food to the patrons laughing and enjoying themselves, I felt at home. I appreciated the waiting area outside with its auditorium style setting because we had to wait a spell. Upon looking at the menu, I was scoping everyones culinary delights and finally agreed upon the Shrimp and Grits with a side order of pancakes. I am a pancake fanatic and my order was really good. Upon first impression, the Shrimp and Grits did not possess an edible delicacy appeal. Once I mixed my plate and burst my egg yolk, magic happened. This was some of the best Shrimp and Grits I have ever eaten. Im not much of a bread eater. I dont know what kind of toast came with this plate, but I can eat a whole basket of it. I finished my meal on such a high note and I had to do a little dance.

Folk Art is a breakfast, lunch and brunch spot specializing in all-day diner-style favorites such as chicken-and-waffles; eggs any style; jumbo biscuits with house made jellies or sausage gravy; signature pork-and-chili soup; fried chicken sandwiches; seven types of brunch-style eggs Benedict; local garden green salads; burgers; and desserts such as bread pudding waffles with eggnog ice cream. Folk Art proffers a full bar with specialty cocktails such as “Mr. Sunshine,” a mixture of gin, orange juice, lemon juice and ginger syrup; and the “Vermont Sour Maple” concocted of bourbon, maple syrup and orange juice. Located just a few doors down from Wisteria on Highland Avenue, Folk Art’s charming brick facade, tile roof and quaint row of antique theatre seats mark the entrance to its corner storefront. Inside, brick walls covered in rustic bric-a-brac, weathered wood floors and reclaimed tables and chairs create a cozy Americana setting. A wall of vintage steel-framed windows divides the main dining room from a smaller sun room area, while a counter provides diners with a full view of the busy kitchen.

Why am I just discovering this magical place?! My friend suggested we check it out for brunch today, and Im so glad that we did! I was worried wed have a long wait since it was Sunday brunch time, but we were seated immediately. Our waitress was very nice and accommodating, especially since we had the hardest time trying to decide what to order...everything sounded delish! For cocktails we tried the Strawberry Fields, The Devil Went Down to Georgia, and the Southern Hospitali-tea (we love boozy brunches, dont judge). We also tried the Sweet Potato Beignets...melted in our mouths! I ordered the lobster eggs benedict (awesome). My friend ordered the Foul Play, which is fried chicken & waffle w/ whiskey peach compote (also awesome, I snuck a few bites from her plate). We were so stoked to find Folk Art, and we cant wait to check out the rest of the menu. Im seriously thinking about going back tomorrow...hey, I said dont judge me!

One of my favorite brunch spots on the weekend. Be prepared for a little bit of a wait though during the peak hours as their seating is somewhat limited. The food is a great mix of Southern meets modern, decent portion sizes, and good value for the prices you pay. One of my favorite items on the menu is their "Craft-5" Grilled Cheese with a side of tomato soup-- so simple, but the flavors are spot on! Other favorite items: 1) the pork "Bad to the Bone" sandwich is so flavorful, 2) "Folk Southern Fried" chicken-- the portion is ridiculously huge!, 3) "Roasted Pork and Chili Verde". The waffles always look good, but I do not remember being overly impressed the one time I had to chocolate smores one. Not the best for larger groups during brunch as the tables are small and you can be there awhile waiting for one of their limited larger tables to open up.

Ive spent the last 4 years searching for the BEST breakfast spot in Atlanta. After eating at Folk Art, I can honestly say my search has ended. The coffee was so good, it didnt need any cream or sweetener. In a mood to sample the menu, we started with a few breakfast appetizers: the sweet potato beignets and the randy. The beignets were cake like donuts covered in cinnamon powdered sugar and the randy, applewood bacon covered in pancake batter and deep fried. Both were served with a side of maple syrup. I do believe the item to write home to your momma about had to be their sausage gravy. By far the most flavorful gravy with chunky bits of sausage inside. And lets not even get started on the Banana Fosters French Toast. Youll need a nap when youre done or definitely a walk along the Freedom Trail but savor every delectable bite. You wont regret it.
