Brace yourselves, good citizens of TLH. A seemingly authentic Chinese restaurant is now open for business on North Monroe - in the footprint of the Mexican restaurant - and before that, Italian restaurant at intersection of East 3rd Ave. Wife noticed the sign up yesterday - it turns out that they opened soft on Saturday. When we arrived this evening, we took the last open table. (historically, the restaurants here also sat downstairs and on the deck. there are no tables yet set up outside, and Im not sure about downstairs yet). I initially ordered the Lamb Hot Pot but, sadly, they ran out of lamb a wee bit prior to our arrival. Learning this, I just asked the nice server to surprise me. He wanted to get a feel for what I was looking for - I just told him to surprise me. Additionally, we ordered two scallion pancakes, Vegetable noodles and a Vegetable fried rice. All was very good. The scallion pancakes - the noodles and the rice all had great flavor. My surprise was the Pepper Steak off of the beef menu. Good thing I got this, because I seldom order beef on a Chinese menu (often preferring seafood, chicken or pork). It was good - a smidge too much sauce for me, but very good nonetheless. Im looking forward to getting down into this menu, specifically the tendon dishes, the hot pots, Roast duck/noodle soup, frankly, any of the duck dishes, the Dongpo pork, the poached chicken, and the steamed flounder.

I never write bad reviews, so I dont take this lightly. After being to some amazing authentic Chinese places, I was happy to find this place, the reviews sounded amazing. Unfortunately, even the specialty dishes are Americanized and cheap. The doubled cooked pork belly was ALL fat (I understand pork belly is fatty... but I had to search for any meat). The salt and pepper ribs were OK...but again, youre paying for bones, not meat. The only thing that was worth the money, meat wise, was the spicy fish and tofu...but this is where the obvious Americanization comes in. It was NOT spicy. Ive worked in and been to Asian restaurants that dont think their white customers can handle heat, so they dont make them spicy. Even after sending it back it came out barely hotter than medium wings at your local wing place. While we did get here early and right after opening, I was really expecting more with a start rating like that. To sum up, edible but not worth writing home about, by a long shot.

Joy Luck has been open for a while now, so I feel that its safe to review now. Over time, its gone through a couple changes, and now I believe its somewhat stable. The most important thing is the food. I can only think of one thing there that I didnt like. Great dumplings, good soup, delicious entrees. This is better than your average chinese take-out place. Speaking of which, you can do take-out with them. After a few hours at a bar, grabbing Joy Luck on the way home for supper is glorious. There are several reasons that I dont give it 5 stars. The food isnt always consistent. Thats not always bad, but I dont like when a certain dish is way more spicy than it was before, has more curry, or is cut a different way. The decor is pretty bad. They still look like they just opened. Sometimes they only have 1 server, so I often avoid Joy Luck for lunch, as I cant get my food, eat and pay before having to head back to work. Like Chinese food? Check this place out.

If you enjoy authentic Chinese food (or have never had it in Tallahassee), this is my best guess as to what it would taste like! On the evening we ate, a large party had come in before us so it took a good while for our food to be served, but it was worth the wait! I ordered the Sesame Chicken, which is a standard I try at every place. It came out arranged beautifully and tasted better than every other place Ive had yet in town. The sauce had the appropriate amount of heat, a feature most places miss. My wife ordered the Spicy Beef Brisket in a Pot and it stole the show. The amount of flavor the cooks were able to cram into such thin slices of (perfectly cooked) brisket was amazing! I cannot recommend this dish enough. Joy Luck Place outdid every other Chinese place in town that Ive tried in the 26 years Ive been here, and it was all close to the same price! Make plans to visit!

I never write reviews yet here I am. I wish zero stars was an option. Joy Luck Place more like Sad Unlucky Place. THIS PLACE HAD THE ABSOLUTE WORST CHINESE FOOD AND SERVICE IVE EVER EXPERIENCED! We waited 2 hours for our food to be delivered and they were 2 miles away. We called a total of four times asking about when we would receive our order and the manager offered us 50% off because of the wait. THEN, 15 minutes after that call the delivery person FINALLY showed up. SHE CHARGED US FULL PRICE!!!! Only later did we realize that she kept the extra $10 for herself and we were SCAMMED. I feel personally offended. DO NOT ORDER FROM JOY LUCK! IT SUCKS. The food wasnt even good either. It is definitely not worth your time or money. Final rating: 0/5.

Beware ,this restaurant overcharged my card and gave their selves their own amount of tip after I gave a cash tip. I hate when people are not honest and are legit scammers. What happened to me is card fraud and I really hope they read this! , I have called them several times to get my refund and they have not done anything to give me back my money. My meal was $17.19 why did I check my account and I got charged $26.19 thats going overboard did you not think I was going to notice that.I hope what happened to me does not happen to anyone else.

Many of menu items are unusual do I was very excited. We ordered Beef tendon and tripe, it was suggested by waiter and it was delicious. Spicy fried tofu was nice and spicy(with many hot dried peppers) loaded with nice veggies. The best one was eggplant with black been, I almost licked the plate. Nice helpful server!

Awesome authentic Chinese food on the specialty menu, and for about $15-$20 they bring out a big platter full of food that can serve about 3-4 people. Delicious food, ample parking, great service, and itll get your girl good and excited. Definitely recommended.

Standard Chinese takeout, nothing special. But it took about 90 minutes to get my food, which was meh. I was so hungry by the time my food came, I ate most of it without realizing it wasnt very good. So thats a positive.

Nice restaurant but they served me pork and tried to hide it under tofu. Unforgivable. Had to get a refund. Service was slow and it was crowded inside.

Quite possibly the worst take out experience ever. If you want your food in under an hour, even when quoted 25 minutes, go elsewhere.

Really great place. Much healthier than other Chinese places. Dishes are also large enough for 2 people so its very affordable!

One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in town. The lunch specials are an amazing deal for the price you pay.
