This was a reasonably enjoyable experience. Theres nothing fancy about this place. The seating is not particularly comfortable, the tables did not look like they were properly cleaned, and the bathroom is difficult to navigate (to the point where it looks like some people dont bother even trying to flush because the handle is pressed up against the wall in the corner). However, the servers were very polite (a bit slow in between visits), and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. $12 can get you a huge plate of food (enchiladas + rice and beans in my case) along with chips and salsa. The salsa had a yummy "we cut the tomatoes up ourselves and it is super fresh" taste to it. The enchiladas with verde sauce were perfectly made. Id give the restaurant a higher rating if I werent a bit concerned about the overall sanitation.

Used to like this place. Had to wait once for awhile so I stopped going. On a whim, we tried it again, my wife called and placed an order. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes so she waited for 10 then left the baby with 80 year old grandma and rushed down there. What a mistake! My wife sat in their restaurant for 45 minutes, waiting!! What the hell. What are they doing that they cant make 3 plates for an hour? My wife said the place was mostly empty, too. Then, the food we got wasnt worth the original 15 minute wait. There are alot of better mexican restaurants in the area, youre better off to skipping this place.

This place used to be our go to. That has changed though over the last few years with there prices going way up and quality going way down. We used to love going here for chips and salsa and carnita tacos but the salsa they have now is so different not homemade at all and the last few times we ordered carnitas the meat was dry and tasted and smelled bad, last time we through away our food even after them remaking it for us. So sad because this place used to be our favorite spot.

Weve been coming here for 30 years and judge all other Mexican restaurants by Alvarez. Weve found none that compare. Its not your upscale YUPPIE place with simulated Mexican food and waiters with big hats, their flavors are fantastic. Even the ice tea is always great. The small size, slightly run down look and the strange bathrooms may put some off but thats good in my opinion, keeps the crowds down. Go there for lunch and youll find it packed with the elite of old Manatee.

We first tried Alvarez 2 years ago when we moved to the area and we werent sure about the place judging from the outside appearance. But after eating there, it soon became one our favorite little places for dinner. We go regularly and they already know what we are having before we order. I would highly recommend trying their shrimp fajitas...they are excellent. At times the service could be faster, but for a quaint place for dinner, we really enjoy it!

This sign is only correct if all the Homestyle Cooking comes directly from a freezer and is topped with cheese from a can. Beans canned, rice from a mix and all too salty. This is probably the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. Salsa watery puréed tomatoes with salt. Ground beef filling with no onions, peppers or seasoning. A very BIG dont bother. Authentic Mexican Homestyle Cooking? What a laugh.

I called to place an order a girl answered I told her I would like to place an order and she asked me can you hold please and I said sure she set the phone down, I held for 20 minutes they never picked up the phone so I called another Mexican restaurant in Palmetto and I got great service and they did not just set the phone down they took my order. This is also the second time that happened...

My wife and I love this place! People that say their food is bland, probably love the over salty joys of Taco Bell. Service is great every time we went and even if you have to wait a little, drink a beer and stop crying. Also, anyone who says they are overpriced needs to get a job.

EXCELLENT tacos! This is my new favorite authentic Mexican restaurant! They have the best homemade spicy salsa! I am originally from Los Angeles, and I am VERY happy that we discovered this restaurant. The people that run the restaurant are VERY nice people!

The food is horrible. I give the place the benefit of a doubt every time. And it sucks every time. Gringos dont know any better, so thats what keeps them in business. I ordered beef fajitas and it had more onions than meat. Fajitas were tough too

I see all these poor/fair reviews and am completely at a loss... I have been going there for years and aside from some of the older family no longer being there they havent lost a best. Absolutely love the place!

Food was way too salty but yet somehow bland. Way overpriced. Not sure how they have been in business for 37 years. Habaneros in Bradenton is way better, never going back to Alvarez in palmetto.

The very best authentic Mexican dishes you can find anywhere in Manatee County. Been a customer for 10+ years, food and service have always been great, theyve never let me down.

Our family regularly makes the 30 minute drive from St. Pete just to have the best Mexican weve ever had. Cant say enough about how good the food is. Order the old #7!

Lifelong customer but lately the prices are going up and the food quality is going down... never order a chicken quesadilla they will give you boiled shredded chicken
