Makoto has been in a staple in Miami’s dining scene since its inception in 2011. Located inside the Bal Harbour shops, Makoto is the brainchild of uber restauranteur Stephen Starr and Executive Chef Makoto Okuwa. The high-end Asian eatery features an array of sushi, robata grill and elevated Japanese classics like its famous Tuna Air Bread and Crispy Rice. The menu is undoubtedly solid, which is why it doesn’t change too frequently. But recently it was looking to add some dishes to the menu and we got a first taste. For starters we got to try the Tofu Nameraka — also known as edamame hummus — made with truffle zunda ae and served with a garlic pita. Its a great spin on the traditional pita and hummus dish that is seen everywhere from parties to restaurants. Heartier dishes include the Aigamo Duck Hoba Yaki make with kojimiso marinated duck for eight days, kumquat and duck fried taro potato along with the Wagyu Katsuretsu Mollefeuille made with pickled Japanese Kabu Turnip, summer truffle and homemade tonkatsu sauce.

My wife got a chicken and vege dish: the sauce was horrible and the chicken seemed like very basic quality chicken breast. I got the seafood pot: the flame from the pot shot the fumes right in my face; they didnt put a separate bowl to keep your nose away from the toxiciy of the fumes. The waitresss was a bit nervous and disappeared after we received our entrees. The octopus was ok, and the short ribs sauce was too overpowering and the meat not very high quality. On top of it, the price was too much, and the waitress asked my wife if she wanted some rice to go with her chicken, which youd figure would come with it. They charged an extra $11 for rice loaded with wasabi sauce. This restaurant is for trendy petit bourgeoisie that know nothing about food and liked getting ripped off.

Makoto is great, but the special "sashimi omakase" could be better. Ive had it several times and its pretty good but not blow your mind. Ill probably try a nigiri version next time. Im a fan of how they separate the ramen bowl into two bowls for you if you are sharing it with another person. Service the first time was awesome. Second time, the server was not very good. She didnt list point out which type of fish was on the omakase platter. Overall, its pretty expensive. Id probably visit more often if it was a tiny bit more affordable, but its pricey.

Our party of four enjoyed a variety of dishes, including miso soup, two kinds of tempura shrimp, grilled eggplant, several maki sushi rolls, noodles, and salmon and sea bass entrees. To a dish, everything was prepared exceedingly well, and the flavors of the fish and veggies were fresh and light. The soft shell crab roll, grilled eggplant, brussels sprouts, and short rib yaki noodles are must-try dishes. A bit on the pricy side, $275 for four people with a few cocktails, but the food quality, presentation, and service made it a good value for the money.

Makoto is part of a restaurant chain that has over 30 food establishments in several cities of the United States, some of them in Florida, as is the case with Le Zoo, Steak 954 and Continental. The preparation and presentation of the dishes is classy and tasteful . Their specialty is Japanese food and the robata or robatayaki (literally, fireside-cooking), which can be enjoyed al fresco or indoors. Don’t forget to bring your credit card, it will come in handy.

The sushi bar is one of the best in S. Florida. The options are more fusion than classic sushi. The quality of fish was excellent and the selection broader than most. The bar itself is beautiful including a proper serving step, allowing the chef to place one or two pieces at a time on our geta keeping it as fresh as possible. When sushi was served, the chef used his own nikiri sauce, a rarity nowadays. Our excellent omakase meal ran $85 +liquor.

A gem in the Bal Harbour Shops. The mixed Asian grill concept has taken off in Miami (Sugarcane, Zuma) but Makoto is the best of the bunch. Menu offerings are creatively daring but not overwhelming. The scene is much more subdued, in large part to the smaller space and more sedate decor. Waitstaff was extremely knowledgeable. A great destination for groups happy to share small plates. Only the dessert options (a bit predictable) fell short.

The food, although pricey, is superb. Beware that if you put your name in, they only allow you 5 minutes to get back to the hostess stand once theyve texted you that your table is ready, otherwise theyll give away your table and youll have to wait the full amount of time again. This is definitely too short of notice especially for those who browse the mall while waiting as there is no service inside the mall to receive texts.

Makoto is not another sushi place. But more a modern Japanese restaurant offering delicate meals. Spicy tuna on crispy rice is an must taste. Sea bass is always fresh. Watercress house salad is delicious. All kinds of tasty Rices. For meat lovers you can go for the Kobe filet. Service is efficient and clean. You should avoid busy weekend hours and definitely make a reservation for parties of +2.

Amazing food! I expected small serving but they were surprisingly big. We ordered a bunch of things and shared them. Service was good and attentive. Ambience was amazing also. We sat outside and the terrace was beautiful and peaceful. The food was to die for. Prices are a bit expensive but the food is worth it. Will come again.

We had the short-rib noodles which was Delicious, maybe the best noodles Ive ever had. We also had the sushi sampler that was just excelent. The waitress was very nice and efficient. Definitely we will come back to try something different. Price is fair, place is very comfy and the service in general was the best.

My favorite Japanese restaurant in Miami. Try the Brussels sprouts (yes, I know. First time I can eat them without being sick too). Grilled beef is also a must try, even if a bit pricey. If you want to eat something more sophisticated than basic sushis, thats the place you want to go to.

Fantastic food & service!! We were greeted promptly and our waiter was so knowledgeable about the food and its origins. I had a great experience and I sincerely recommend this restaurant for couples and friends looking for a great time.
