Although the overall museum is amazing, I am sorry to say that the food was terrible. I asked to speak with a manager and I expressed my feelings about the food and he apologized. However, they need to take drastic measures to renegotiate a contract with some other food service establishment. May I suggest the cooks at Georgia Browns in DC. With the type of museum and the beauty of it all. I am proud to say the design, layout and the content of the exhibits are strikingly beautiful but the Sweet Home Cafe does not belong in the same building. I was told by a visitor from Seattle Washington that the food was not good there and I immediately disputed her. Oh how wrong was I, the food is disgusting, the chicken appeared to come from a banquet meal and was very salty, the cornbread was dry and hard, the oxtail were tough and dry, the macaroni was terrible, the greens undercooked and no seasoning to anything. The banana pudding was made with cheap knock off vanilla wafers. And they have the nerve to charge over the top prices for garbage.

My first visit with my wife and son and I was thoroughly disappointed , I wouldnt serve that food to my guests and thats what we were. We spent a total of $68 and some odd cents for trash. The greasy chicken with crust coming off in your hands was pitiful, mac and cheese tough and cold, collard greens no respect for werent even cut up. We also had the pleasure of cold fish cakes ( called crab), cold hush puppies, fried catfish cold and French fries. Not a pleasing meal at all. If it wasnt for the Hot sauce , it wouldve been a total bust. I was sooo displeased and that was NOT a good or fair representation of African American Cusine. A Salad Bar is needed there in a hurry , to at least have a Healthier Option.

This Cafe was horrible. It doesnt do the museum any justice. We order the crawfish gumbo and there wasnt any crawfish. The gumbo was salty and didnt have any meat in it. The menu said it should have andoullie sausage and duck in it. We had 2 pieces of sausage. The catfish looked cold and old, so I ordered the macaroni and cheese. The macaroni and cheese didnt have any seasoning. The menu is overpriced and the food quality is poor. This Cafe also does not provide straws for their drinks. I would recommend eating a full meal before you attend this place or plan to eat after you leave the museum. This restaurant is in need of new management and cooks before it really goes down the drain.

The museum was great, the food... not so great. I thought I was getting a good deal because they put a lot of food on the plate but the quality of the food was mediocre. My mac and cheese was cold, not just NOT HOT, it was cold and didnt taste good. The greens were not flavorful at all. The fried chicken wasnt horrible but Ive had better...though it was hot and freshly cooked. I expected a better quality for "soul food" but in the end, it was still cafeteria food. Maybe I should have tried a different station. My cornbread and wine were good though....

The food was ok, but over priced. I had the fried chicken which was bland, the collard greens had minimal flavor, and the mac and cheese was ok. They charge you 3.80 for a fountain drink and 2.80 for cornbread which was too hard. What made my rating a 2 was the fact that one of the workers actually had an attitude and complained about having to assist a woman with a cane with her tray. Also, the woman who served our food wasnt friendly and gave us very small portions. The greeter was pleasant and that was the only positive. We will not be going back.

First trip to the museum and I really enjoyed the parts I saw...they say you need 2 days to see it all, but Id say at least 2.5! The cafe was crowded, but people are patient and friendly. I got the catfish poboy, minus the bread, and the fish was delicious, especially with the sauce. The sweet potatoes were a bit disappointing though: mildly seasoned and too dense, seemed like they didnt cook long enough. But Ill definitely be back: for the museum AND the cafe! :)

I love the museum but Im extremely disappointed in the fact that the general public STILL isnt allowed to just go in without timed passes like they should have been able to back in JANUARY..... I cant bring my grandparents...... Friends.... Or myself..... At this point everyone should have access to this museum its been 6 months already. Somethings gotta give and no passes available until AT LEAST JULY.... Its extremely disappointing.

I was unfortunately very disappointed by my lunch experience. The lines for food were outrageously long due to waiting on food to be brought out. I waited in one line to find out that they werent serving two menu items contrary to the menu screen. The worst offense was that the food was subpar. I hope that the management can turn the situtation around, in order to live up to the quality of the museum.

The food was pretty good. Be advised though, the portions are a bit on the smaller side for what youre paying for. Because of that, I initially got the gumbo and it was absolutely delicious! I next got the oxtails. I liked that they were big and meaty but sadly more on the plain side. Id recommend going to eat a little later in the day to avoid the insane line.

If I could give the place half a star I would. I paid thirty dollars for three prawns wrapped in bacon with "special" sauce...which Im sure was just ketchup. My pork sandwich was disgusting, no flavor at all and they even manged to mess up the coleslaw. The price was only painful because of how bad the meal was on a scale of 1-10, it was a -9.

Lunch for two was $50. Desserts were very good. We both had catfish po boys. The fish was good but barely warm and the sauce was bland. Bread wasnt at all crusty and it was a little dry. Nice atmosphere and attractive decor for a cafeteria. Friendly staff.

Nice atmosphere and has a lot of options to pick from. The food is a little over priced for the quality/taste of the food, but they do give you good portions.

Museum was very nice. Cafe is very overpriced. Save your money. $4 for drinks is ridiculous.
