OMG, Went to this place on 12/18/11 and had the most discussing entree ever., They couldve given my plate to any dog that seemed to be roaming around outdoors. Ordered my food at 5;15, arrived at 6:00. Instead of waiting to hear my pick order was ready, I had to wait 30 minutes for the two meals I pre-ordered. I not sure who was in the kitchen this second time around, but I can assure you that it will not be a Third appearance. I am so willing but hesitant to give most whole in the wall bars the benefit of doubt, but Langston Bar and Grille is simply for your occasional drunk. It seemed that they were serving more drinks and pressed to recieve tip , instead of helping customers that were simply waiting on pick-up orders. This place lacks customer service skills. I spoke so highly of the quality of food my first time visiting, but today was......gut wrenching. Can anyone define CANDIED YAMS, especially if you live in DC. These sweet potatoes where simply boiled and (white) sugar was added to the water. Can u imagine my face after getting back to work and clearly seeing this. I will add pictures of what there so call candied yams look like. I wouldnt advised middle/highly class persons to visit this place. I honestly thought I would support this blackowned business, but simply put, if the owner wasnt there cooking, I shouldnt have been there eating. NEVER AGAIN.

Been to this place twice... the first and the last. A friend purchased a Groupon for us get some Soul food for Sunday dinner. Exciting right? Nope. Its been a long time since Ive had such awful food and service. Got there at 4:40 p.m. on a Sunday and shouldve known something wasnt right because the place was empty. We were seated upstairs with blaring jazz music. Our waitress was pleasant enough (with her visible crack)- though we felt like we were getting on her last set of nerves. She gave us our wine and took our appetizer order. The jerk wings were ok but the fried wings were DELICIOUS. Thats what the star is for. Ordered the fat fries and they were nothing to write home about. I ordered the southern fried chicken and waffle with garlic mashed potatoes and collard greens. Chicken was wonderful but the mashed potatoes were too garlicky, the waffle felt like a piece of cardboard and the collard greens tasted like a green leather collar. Also, we didnt get our food til minutes to 7:00 p.m. Certainly will never visit this "establishment" ever again!!

Terrible service. Super slow. Barmaid had no personality. Reservations were made for 6pm. The staff had no record of the reservation and we were told that the chef didnt show up so we could only order appetizers at the bar. At 630 the barmaid informed us that we could order from the dinner menu. The food took over 30 minutes to come out and it was nothing to write home about. The shrimp and grits had potential but the portion was not equal to the cost. Whatever you do DO NOT ORDER THE CRAB CAKES OR THE GREEN BEANS! The crab cakes were full of fillers and the green beans were way too salty. The mac & cheese had no flavor and was cold in some parts and the mashed potatoes were instant. If you still decide to dine here after reading this review, please be aware of the rift raft that continuously drifts in and out of the establishment through the back door. These characters have no destination other than to hang out around the bar and near the stairs to the dining area; one of them happened to be the chef that didnt show up for work. BON APPE`TIT

Had dinner there last night and the wait staff was horrible ... as it only consisted of one person who was also the bartender. We were not greeted very welcoming at all especially when we went upstairs to seat ourselves for dinner. There was a lady employee up there doing whatever and she didnt say a word ... walked right past us as if we werent even there. Now as for the food ... being from the south and this place serving southern fare - I was very disappointed. Appetizers: pan corn bread & chicken livers / Entree: Shrimp w/Cheesy Grits & Grilled Pork Chops w/String Beans - corn bread tasted like Jiffy box mix, chicken livers were excellent, grits were very runny and the shells were left on the shrimp and the pork chops were severely overcooked. No homemade tea (southern fare - and no homemade ice tea - really). Not a good spot for dinner. As for the bar area - EXTREMELY SMALL. Get there early if you want a seat. Bar looks at if it can seat no more than 10 people and that will be very tight. Langston Bar & Grille - thumbs down.

My brother & I went there after completing our first 5k! It was around 12:30pm, we sat upstairs which was warm & cozy. Renetta was our waitress & she was awesome, and informative- She went out her way for us! The food was SUPERB to say the least. I had fried Tilapia, mac & cheese, and green beans. We also had some scrumptious fried wings as an appetizer. My brother had crab cakes and mashed potatoes- which were delectable!! This place is a hidden gem in DC. It had that Brooklyn, New York brownstone vibe and it was decorated beautifully. Its not so much metro accessible and the food does take a while to cook as I presume its being cooked from scratch. I just loved how tastefully seasoned the food was and they have the best hot sauce everrr!!! :) We got a good deal on Groupon to visit and we got great food, exceptional service, and a chill ambience. Overall this was a wonderful dining experience & I cannot wait to visit again!

What an awesome surprise! We were on vacation. We bought a groupon and headed there by uber. A little concerned at the beginning, and then we were escorted up to the restaurant. Our appetizers were the salmon cakes with grits and the jerk chicken wings, both delish. Our dinners were diverse, ribs, fish, oxtails. All were very good. The sides were yams, green beans,Mac n cheese, all were good. The bathrooms were very clean and even had tvs. Dessert was bread pudding which was awesome. At the end we called the chef to our table and up the stairs came Duane who seemed a little shy like no one had ever asked him to come to the table before. We all praised his good work for the night. In the end we über end back to Pennsylvania Ave and we knew we had experienced an authentic night of awesome food! Ching Ching!

I will never eat here again. My husband bought a groupon for this place and since we both loved soul food decided to would be a good place for a date night. WRONG. Long story short the service was terrible, I mean really bad I was ready to leave 3min after taking a seat at the bar where we were told that we had to sit to order dinner. For some reason we were not allowed upstairs. We were subjected to profanity laced music from the pay per play music box. The bartender placed our order in wrong twice, gave us the dinner that was intended for someone else (who was blessed enough to sit upstairs) and then came back to retrieve the meal without one word. Its a good thing we didnt have a place setting. Somebody posted something about a neighborhood watering hole and thats exactly the feel i got and not in a good way.
