Dont get robbed! I used to go to Matsuhisa every time I went to Aspen (4 or 5 times a year) because I like the food and atmosphere. About a year ago, I was asked by my waiter to get my coat from the check and pull out my wallet to prove I was over 21 (I was 29 at the time). After a lovely $2,000+ meal, I went to the restroom and ended up meeting my party in the lobby. Since I hadnt had the chance to go back to the table, I didnt realize that I had left my wallet as I usually keep it in my jacket. Despite our generous tip of more than $400, someone at the restaurant took my wallet. I called and asked and the hostess said nobody had seen it, then received a call back 15 minutes later informing me that it had miraculously shown up.. empty. I was distraught at having been robbed and was surprised that it happened at such a well reputed restaurant. I saw cameras all over and asked if they would check the footage and was told that no cameras were pointed such that they would see the table. I told them that this was unsettling and requested an apology or incentive for me to risk coming back. I was refused on all counts and was denied even the most polite of appetizer coupons. I have had no reason to go back since. I now go to Kenichi because it is a much better experience. Like Matshuhisa, Kenichi also gets its fish ridiculously fresh from Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo but chooses not to rocket up their prices like Matsu. If you want more new-style variety, I would recommend Maru which has fantastic rotating specials and an attentive, friendly wait staff. Dont pay more for less.

Its easy to see why even in a town of exceptional restaurants, Matsuhisa is consistently the most crowded. I had the entry level tasting menu and was duly impressed both by the quality and variety of the meal (diver scallop, lamb, oysters, and tuna just to name a few). The rest of my table ordered off of the regular menu and were equally impressed. Service was fast and friendly, the only mistake over the course of the meal being a server trying to give us something meant for another table. Having eaten at Nobu in NYC, this location is certainly on par. My only suggestion other than telling you to go is to try something special (black cod, soft shell crab, sea bass) and leave the plain ol sushi for your local joint.

I can not compare it to other sushi places in Aspen, but otherwise, compared to other places I had sushi, their quality is rather mediocre, and prices are above the Aspen mountain. Got fooled ordering their "new style" salmon sashimi, apparently it was not raw, this cooking simply killed salmon taste (if it was any) and texture. Spicy tuna was tasteless, as well as house special roll. Several sushi were OK. Just OK. Sushi rice is kind of weird. Looks like its best one can get while in Aspen, but I can not get how other people could praise their quality. Did you ever eat sushi in other (not Aspen) locations?!

Overpriced, mediocre sushi. Most of the rolls on the menu are around $12 which is pretty reasonable price. However, the rolls are tiny and dont contain much ingredients. DONT order the roll with (cucumber) next to the name. That doesnt mean it is wrapped with cucumber, cucumber is the ONLY ingredient! They offer a couple of additional rolls that arent listed on the menu. We ordered 2 of these "off menu" rolls, and they ended up costing $20 each! Thats a big price jump from their other rolls.

This is one of my favorites in Aspen. You can never go wrong with the chefs menu as you get to try a whole lot of things that you would never even consider ordering (or may not even be on the menu). The sake and wine list here is amazing, as are the cocktails. The atmosphere is posh and is what youd expect from a Matsu restaurant. This location is more intimate than the one in Vail, though the views at that location is absolutely breathtaking. 5 star dining experience.

Nestled away in this mountain town is the historic Matsuhisa. The chef is legendary on many accounts. The place was empty when we got there at 630. It was the first week off the off season so we were fine getting all the attention. We went nuts and ordered everything. Did it live up to the hype? Youll have to see for yourself. The yellowtail was good. It didnt make me roll over and cry from the tumors of how good people described it but it was good.

Exceptional but fully/over priced sushi with a hip, Zen vibe. The 40 table grand room downstairs with an adjacent bar is loud but pulsating and energetic. If you enjoy celebrity sightings this is one of the best places in town (while we dined during Christmas week on toro topped with caviar Rufus Wainright was two tables away and Paris Hilton and family were three away). The abalone in a garlic sauce or sashimi style is my personal favorite.

Wow!!! This place is 5 stars in ANY city! Best of all, in Aspen, you can wear jeans to enjoy it. We had the Spinach Salad (nothing short of amazing - it is like nothing weve ever tasted), the broiled black cod, some sashimi and two of the restaurants specialty rolls. I would order it all again, and again and again! Im glad we went on our last night of the trip, but I think we could have eaten there every night and loved it each time.

At least a weekly experience for us, very good quality, portions & prices are typical of a seasonal community, the staff are very knowledgeable & friendly, seasonal specialties add a variety of specials add to this outstanding restaurant fare, often serving Sushi from Japan. Very good Saki & Wine offerings. Highly recommeded, weve enjoyed dinning there since it first opened, enjoyed several other of Nobus restaurants.

Very good food with a fast food atmosphere. Every second somebody tries to take away your unfinished plate and asks you for orders. This makes it even difficult to talk becaise you are interuoted every 3 miinutes.. No place to enjoy great kitchen. Such a pity because tonfood is excellent.. If you are comming from Europe you probablY will not like this place.

One of the finest restaurants in Aspen. Excellent destination if youre looking for great Japanese food, be it hand rolls, tempura or Sushi/Sashimi. The atmosphere is always good as this place is busy every night. The place gets quite noisy as a consequence as well, but that just adds to the charm in my opinion. Definitely a must try if youre in Aspen.

Should I polite , no. What a boring Sushi menu , that was stolen from Basalts City Market Grocery store. Its a Sushi restuarant in Aspen. Where is the depth and creativity? Dont you claim to have Sushi Chef. What can he do? Chef special roll, california roll , but fish inside.Come on!! Pathetic Apps and starters very good. Get some personality!

One normally wouldnt expect mind blowing sushi in a mountain town. However, this place will knock your socks off! The flavors are off the hook...literally :-) The freshness of the fish will boggle your mind. So creative and masterful! I highly recommend it. It is expensive though, so bring the bank when you come.
