In my opinion, Cafe Campesino has absolutely the best Mexican food in Santa Cruz. Ive now lived here for almost 15 years and this little kiosk has fresher, tastier food than any other place Ive visited. The menu offers several dishes that allow you to combine ingredients into platters of your own design. The alternatives include some common and some uncommon items, and include a nice selection of veggie options. The flavors are consistently clear and distinct, not muddied by globs of gooey, oily cheese or drenched in killer hot-sauce. (There may be a time and place for those things too, but Cafe Campesino is not it.) Their corn tortillas are always fresh and are made by hand, off site. The texture and flavor of those tortillas are superior to anything Ive had outside Mexico City. Their salsas have complex and subtle flavors, and include enough chile to make them interesting, without overwhelming the other ingredients. If you like Mexican food, or just like flavorful food, you should visit Cafe Campesino. I just hope their growing popularity doesnt destroy them.

Cafe Campesino is the BEST food in downtown Santa Cruz - it is located in the "hut" in front of New Leaf Market but dont be fooled by the size of their operation. Living in Santa Cruz for 4 years, I came here every day - now as a visitor, I come every chance I get because it is that good. The owners are the sweetest, the prices are great, & the "big taco" is delicious.

We stumbled across this place looking for Mexican food in the area, and Im glad we did. I got the enchiladas verdes. The ingredients were fresh and the sauce was delicious. It felt much lighter than the Mexican fast food Im used to, as nothing was oily or greasy. I had the horchata as well, which was quite interesting (and a first for me).

Really great food. The cafe is really just a small booth on the sidewalk. The wait time was a bit long, but the atmosphere was wonderful so we didnt mind. I got the Tinga plate and each part of the dish was extremely well cooked and flavorful. Also their iced tea is amazing!
