Shalimar staff was superb. We were a group of 7 converging from 4 locations. We were first to arrive and it was about 10 minutes till the others were due to arrive. The hostess insisted on seating us immediately and got our water and set the table up for seven and brought us some naan to munch on while we waited for the others. The restaurant was also hosting the local rotary (about 50) in a back room. and everything was so smooth and unhurried. The same buffet was used by the restaurant and the big party as well. It seem to be always stocked and ready. The salad and fruit part was quite simple, green salad fixings, cantaloupe watermelon and a mango custard. (which my honey loved to the tune of refills) The main buffet had about 10 different dishes and I enjoyed all I tried. Oddly the ones I did not try, my wife raved about. How interesting. I decided not to go into a food coma, so I only had one plate from the main foods and on plate of fruit. I was happy and full and we all wnet off the the movies at the local indie film palace.

first the good part, the hospitality is amazing and people are very nice to talk to. I believe this is a family owned and operated restaurant and they make you feel at home. However - We have lived in India all our lives and know what Indian food is. This is definitely not real Indian. We took some guests along when they felt like having Indian and since the only other Indian restaurant is not worth going to at all, we thought this might not be that bad but we were wrong. We ordered 2 vegetable dishes and 3 kinds of Indian breads. both he dishes felt like one gravy was made and one was MADE to look different by adding loads of butter. food quality was unacceptable and our guests kept reminding us that there are not really any options for us to choose from. I agree its not very expensive but for what we paid, I could have fed everyone much better Indian food at home for 10 days! I dont think I would be going back there

This is a hidden gem in San Luis Obispo. The food is definately Northern Indian/Pakistani and makes little accommodation to western palates. In other words, its pretty close to home made Punjabi food. And if you cant stand the spicing get out of the kitchen! The lunch buffet is pretty decent. Some days its really really good. And for 12 bucks or so you will not be able to eat dinner that night. Mostly vegetarian, but they always have tandoori chicken and perfect nans. To get a real taste of the cuisine though you need to have dinner there. The food is actually much better than at the buffet and you will not be disappointed with the artful spicing (yes it is an art and every artist has his or her own spicing). Asim and Henna do a great job running this family restaurant and if you like Punjabi food (whats not to like), you will be pleased with this joint.

I am from London where World cuisine rocks with their great taste, specially INDIAN, PAKISTANI, BANGLADESHI, CHINESE and many more...... Visiting Shalimar in SLO back in April 2015 got VERY DISAPPOINTED from the Tableware:- Dinner plates can see scratch marks, with black and grey scratch marks looks like they have been well passed by date for serving food, same goes with silverware well passed by date, Food counter not well presented nor appealing to the eyes. Food wise quality would not pass beyond 1 STAR. If I would have known earlier I would have preferred Mc. Donalds instead. If this restaurant was serving in LONDON it would be definite NO NO even to EUROPEANS & OTHERS.

This place has usually been crowded. It is a typical Indian restaurant in my experience. My experiences (plenty) with Indian restaurants have rarely been good. I try to avoid them as much as I can but some tend to have halal food which is a huge plus. We went for the buffet. The staff is really nice but the buffet is kind of a small area in the corner with very few options. The food was quite bland and not appetizing, in my opinion. The seating was a little cramped, although we were 5 people so thats understandable. Overall we didnt really eat much and most likely wont be coming back. If you do like typical Indian food then it could be a great place for you to check out.

My friend and I have eaten in this restaurant three times now. We loved the dinner we ordered off the menu on a week night on our first visit. Went back with friends for Monday night buffet (wasnt terribly impressed) then again for their Sunday buffet yesterday, The Sunday buffet was bright and fresh, we enjoyed all of the dishes. A nice variety of dishes and well seasoned. The owners wife served us on our three visits and we enjoyed her. Shes warm, helpful and just the right amount of conversation . I recommend this place with reservations about the Monday buffet...go there on a Sunday for buffet but order off the dinner menu the rest of the week.

Although the food was quiet tasty, there needs to be quiet an improvement in the service. They messed up with our dishes, wrongfully informing us about which was what dish while serving and thereafter, blaming us for asking too many questions causing the confusion. Although very diligent about taking away used dishes, they would often forget asking prior to lifting dishes from our table. They would often take away dishes that we were still working on. Also a long hair was found in the food for which they excused themselves unapologetically saying there are no long haired person working in the kitchen. Thanks for the rebate at the end of the day!

This is easily one of the best restaurants in the county. I have never been disappointed with the service or quality. This is a family owned and run restaurant and the owners are often the ones serving you. There are excellent options for vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters alike. If you are unfamiliar with Indian type food Id suggest going when they offer a buffet as it is the perfect way to discover what dishes you like most. I have tried Indian food at many restaurants and this one has the best Butter Chicken dish of any Ive tried.

I cant get enough of Shalimar! The daily buffet is always good and has the same things I like plus a few new items every time I visit. Im addition to having Rock solid Indian food, they also have gluten free naan bread which is just amazing and pretty unique to Indian restaurants. They also can make many of thier dishes diary free (using coconut milk) which is just unheard of the different indian restaurants Ive visited. They are great for a quick bite or even for a large party. I fully recommend Shalimar.

Ive eaten at a different Shalimar location in the midwest and missed how great the food was there. I figured that coming here for the first time that this place will hopefully be the same way. My first impressions were that the inside wasnt really that big and the buffet area was really small. The staff didnt seem that friendly either. No chicken curry was served on the buffet but only chicken tikka masala for the main curry. I would return but not as frequently like the other midwest location.
