This is probably one of the best "within your pocket" Indian restaurant in the city. The run up to the restaurant is a bit shady (especially the Mission Street) though. Food: We had Ghee Sambhar Idli, Mysore Masala Dosa and Onion-Peas Uttapam. To start with, Ghee Sambhar Idli was delicious and we finished it in almost no time. Sambhar was amazing and Idlis were little thick but soft enough. Mysore Masala Dosa and Uttapam were good as well. However, the star of the dish was Sambhar again which they nail it every time. Chutneys disappointed a bit as they were a bit off from the original taste which we normally have in best of the restaurants in India. Ambiance: It is a little cramped but the lighting makes up for it. It obviously has a very Indian feeling to it and most of the people in the restaurants were non-Indians when we visited. Seems like this place is a hit among them. However, it is not so much for the fine dining. The restaurant is a bit noisy as well. Service: The service was good and fast. There were only two people we saw catering to the entire restaurant but man, they were really quick. One was an Indian who looked like the owner/manager as he was chatting well with the guests as well. Another one looked like a Mexican. Overall, the place is good. We didnt get to try much in one visit but I feel reasonably confident about other dishes as well.

Love, love LOVE this place! Ive been here twice and have never been dissapointed! Udupi Palace cooks up some of the best vegetarian Indian food Ive ever had. Not to mention the waiters are totally gorgeous... great eye candy that makes it very easy to go back again and again! The decor and ambience are really great, relaxing indian music playing, and the dishes are very unique as well as healthy. I had the Dosa stuffed with cottage cheese and 3 different types of chutney, the samosas that were fried PERFECTLY and not dripping off grease like so many other restaurants Ive been to have prepared it. My sister had the mattar paneer, I had a dosa filled with Spinich and cottage cheese. It was huge and totally delicious. The only thing I DO not like is that UP refuses to accept credit cards but accepts personal checks. Talk about being behind the times! Sure you get charged more when you do credit cards, but think about what happens if a check bounces... the bank would charge the establishment! It is kind of odd being an established restaurant thats been around for awhile and still not accepting credit cards. Thats the only thing I would change. Everything else, Id have to say is perfect. They were my virgin South Indian cuisine experience, and I have to admit, have left me well satisfied.

A small chain with a few other locations, Udupi Palace is still a welcome addition to Valencia Street, right near another south Indian restaurant called Dosa and also excellent Herbivore and not far from amazing Cha-Ya Vegan Japanese. South Indian food is less common in the US, which is a shame. Specializing in dosa, a stuffed crepe-like dish, they also have uthapam, a pancake-style variation of dosa, in addition to more traditional Indian curries, such as chana masala and mixed vegetable curry. They also have two tomato-based soups. For a visual as well as a gastronomic treat, try the paper masala dosa! Served with a delectable sambar and a three different chutneys, including a lovely coconut chutney, this is a feast for the eyes, mouth, and stomach. It goes really well with their mango juice, too. With an all-veg menu, large portions, reasonable prices, great service, nice ambiance, and a good mix of people in a hip neighborhood, Udupi Palace is an instant classic and a new favorite.

My family just visited this place to satisfy our craving for South Indian before a long flight, and this place was awesome. We did have an early dinner (around 4:00) but the service was incredibly fast and friendly. The waiter apologized when they slightly mixed up the order (exchanging idlis for vadas) and replaced them quickly. The waiter was so great we specifically tipped him extra!. As for the food it was also quite great. The dosas, uttapums, chutneys, and sambar were hot, fresh, and top notch, but the appetizers (idlis and vadas) were just average and felt pre-prepared and just reheated. The default spice level was quite mild and good for some, but they serve spicy at request. Also the portions are HUGE. We ordered 3 main dishes among 4 people and still had half of one leftover, and we all had skipped lunch! All in all I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to grab quality food without looking for a fancy, formal sit-down.

Before I tell you how great the food is, Ill give you heads up that Udupi Palace is CASH ONLY. Now that that is out of the way, this is a great spot for a casual dinner in the Mission, and I am so happy we came in. It is Southern Indian food and the whole menu is vegetarian. We started with the paper dosa which is seriously 2 feet long and served with 5-6 different types of dipping sauces. The entire restaurant turned to see it being delivered to our table since no one else had one. We ordered a bunch (5) entrees and shared them so we could try some of everything which is totally the way to go here. I had the tikka masala dosa, which was awesome. The saag paneer curry was excellent and the mixing of flavors from all of the dishes was a great way to try lots of things. We stuck with water to drink and our tab was only $16 per person.

Maybe dosa isnt my thing. Atmosphere is crowded. Generally there is a wait but we were seats for a party of 5 in 15 minutes. This is highly unusual and if you are going here please call head of time. Over all, if you are itching for some south indian veggie food and have to have it immediately ... maybe... come here. We ordered gobi manchurian as a starter. 3 masala dosa, 1 saag paneer dosa, and 1 mysore masala dosa. Firstly, our dosas came before the starter. But as an Indian I know now to go to an Indian restaurant for the service. The dosas were not crispy. 2 of the 3 masala dosas were cold. I like the red sauce but I barely got any on my plate while others had a ton. I judge a place by their mango lasi and it was sour with double the sugar to compensate. I would recommend you find something else. Peace.

To start the food was good. I have a lot of Indian restaurants by my office so Im a little jaded. Plus, Im a long-time fan of Dhosa which is similar but better than Udupi. The reason for the 1-star is the service. He was surly throughout the meal. When asked for a recommendation he sort of grunted. The bill was $32. I gave him $40. He asked me if I wanted change as if I was being ungrateful not to give it to him. Then when he came back with the change he threw it down in front of my friend even though he knew that I had paid him. He obviously mistook us for a dating situation and thought he would shame me into tipping him 25%. Good work in the kitchen, but please manage the wait staff - there are so so many good Indian choices in SF.
