I cant believe this place has such a good rating! My wife and I were recommended to Sabuku from some friends that live in the area who said that they LOVE it so we decided to give try and we were very disappointed! We understand that restaurants can have bad nights so we decided to give it a second shot. Again, we left frustrated. We live down the street so we decided to try it one last time...again, everything about our experience was horrible! The sushi "chefs" dont know whether the fish is local, farm raised, or freshly imported. We learned later from the owner that Sabuku ONLY carries farm raised yellowtail and salmon. While this is common for many sushi restaurants, it is very disappointing that the other sushi chefs dont know these details. The prices are extremely high, especially for the quality of the fish. Our order was incorrect on all three of our visits to Sabuku. All in all, the caliber of food from Sabuku can be compared with sushi that can be purchased at a local super market, not excellent sushi. Clearly hipsters around Normal Heights dont know what good sushi is...hence Sabukus good ratings online.

Lets just say the ratings dont reflect our experience. Started with an unfriendly approach. Waitress took our order and then we proceeded to watch the chefs have a 20+ minute conversation with other guests while making one, count it....one sushi roll. Asked the waitress about our food and her response "every roll takes 7 to 8 minutes" my response " so if I ordered 6 rolls it could take 42 to 48 minutes to eat?" Her response "it depends" with an attitude. No one in that place seemed to care. The one thing we did receive before telling them to cancel our order was a boring 2 oz portion of tasteless seweed salad. Oh. And they were out of ice..? Terrible hospitality, terrible execution. Wont be back. Will tell all of our LOCAL friends to stay away. They could care less anyways it seems.

the overall the food was fantastic everything was right on point when it came to the food but our server... oh my goodness, our server!!! Im not pulling any punches here. it was like he came straight out of the penitentiary and somebody gave him a job he couldnt read the menu he didnt know where the items were on the menu and it just frustrated me me and my fiance. we ordered and it came without half of our food and he didnt remember that we even ordered the other part of our food so it was just a terrible experience but the food is outstanding. The place was kind of empty when we arrived, by the time we left it was packed and i could see that other customers were catching on to the server. I would eat there again only if he is no longer there.

Excellent sushi! Very creative rolls. Including a section of bacon rolls and healthy rolls. I was hesitant with the bacon, but it tasted better than I thought. The bacon was very good quality. Not too crunchy, but definitely not under-cooked. Here are the rolls we had: BTA, Red Apple, Orange (Blossom ?), "tanned" red dragon roll. The only one we didnt really like was the tanned red dragon. We think that the "tanning" comes from a butane torch, because you can really taste the fuel on the fish. I deducted a star because they served their RED wine chilled! I had to hold each of our glasses for about 10 minutes before the wine tasted good. The cabernet was better than the pinot. But the glass was FULL!

Excellent sushi with a fun neighborhood atmosphere! My girlfriend and I had been watching the Sushi Coming Soon sign for months in advance looking forward to finally having a local sushi joint. Our first visit was an absolute blast enjoying the Chefs Special Sashimi and some sake. We were visited by the owner who also lives in the neighborhood and found ourselves chatting with the people around us who were also locals. The sashimi was excellent and passed the critical tastes of my girlfriend who will only go to a few sushi restaurants in SD. Weve been back almost every week since with friends and all have had great experiences trying a variety of rolls and the welcoming atmosphere.

Although Ive read the reviews by others, they must have eaten at a different place or they are all shills. About the only thing good was the Plum Wine - which softened the blow of the lousy big time over priced food. Seldom do I get mad enough to write up a restaurant review - but as a person who eats out 7 days per week - Id say Im qualified to render a credible review - and these folks deserve it. Even the sushi chefs looked bored - or indifferent. I suggest the owner take all of them to 6 random sushi places in San Diego that are far less expensive and learn what the other guys are doing and what good sushi really tastes like. In summary, if you feel like sushi - try another place.

Horrible customer service! Avoid this place! I called to make an order for pickup, they told me they dont take them over the phone - only on the website. Ok, so went to the website, spent nearly an hour going over the huge menu with 4 people - only for it to keep glitching out, wouldnt accept the order, and eventually lost the entire thing. Called to say it wasnt working, the guy absolutely refused to take it over the phone (wtf), didnt offer any other options or help and then proceeded to hang up on me. Ive never had a restaurant employee be so rude. Its a shame because I just moved in down the street, but I will now be avoiding them like the plague after this experience.

So I used to be an exclusive customer of Sushi Deli...and then Sabuku Sushi opened its doors walking distance from my house, so I decided instead of Sushi deli and karaoke for my birthday I would do Sabuku and karaoke...I havent eaten sushi anywhere else ever since!! The food is fresh and delicious, and he is flexible!! If you dont like spicy crab or spicy tuna, theyll use non-spicy for you!!!! He had this roll on a weekly special one week, not on the regular menu, and it is by far my favorite, and he has always been willing to make it for me if I ask for it...such a great place. Classy, clean, fun, and delicious!!!!!

We were given 1 "menu" that was an extremely bright iPad (they wouldnt adjust the lighting for us). Waitress would walk away if we paused when giving her our order. Why call the miso soup...miso... if you state its not real miso on the menu? No wasabi or ginger unless you ask for it. Ive given this place my 4th chance in 2 yrs. Horrible service and mediocre food. Tempura came with mayo...yuck. Orders placed at 9:22pm order arrived at 10:15pm and one plate was completely wrong. Dont waste your time or money.

This place is owned by Bob. I have been going to eat at his restaurant since he opened his doors and I crave it at least once a week. Sabuku is about a block away from my office so it is super convienient for me, but even if it wasnt I would happily make the drive. Bob is passionate, resourceful, inventive and a culinary genius. The food is always the freshest and it is always wonderful. It is in my opinion one of the top 2 Sushi restaurants in San Diego. I highly recommend it.
