I quote Mel Brooks History of the World, Part 1: Marcus Vendictus: "A beautiful, hand-carved alabaster bathing vessel!" Caesar: "Nice. Nice. Not thrilling, but nice." And that pretty much sums up Ranchos: its an alabaster bathing vessel. Ranchos is not the best Mexican food, nor is it the worst. I cant think of a single dish that Id strongly recommend, nor can warn you to avoid another. The service is hit and miss, the atmosphere teetering between somewhat pleasant and slightly claustrophobic, and the tables strangely tiny. Seriously, they have the narrowest restaurant tables I have ever seen. While it probably allows them to cram a few more seats in, it also makes diners feel like theyre right on top of their cross-table dinnermates. Although Im not a vegetarian, I appreciate that they do a really good job catering to the non-carnivorous, and I respect their reasonable prices and pioneering spirit in moving into North Park long before it was cool to, but beyond that, its one of those restaurants where people end up when no one is inspired enough to think of a better place to go. So feel free to shrug your shoulders, give it a try, and youll probably walk out thinking: "Not thrilling, but nice."

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE VEGAN Okay so Im in the area looking for something to eat (I am vegan) so I google "vegan restaurant" this year lace poped up so it interested me because I never seen a Mexican style restaurant that has vegan options so I order a vegan California boruito for pick up over the and I made it clear to man that it was a vegan order I make my way over to restaurant assuming my food would be waiting for me... It was not so I waited awhile and my so bald vegan California burrito was finished I walk back to my car and have a bite firstly it was carne assad meat then I da sour cream so I instantly walked back and asked for a new one I get a new one fairly quickly get back to the car and take a bite well I know the cheese is vegan because it tastes as so but the "meat" Im not sure about I wasnt convinced it was "vegan" or not so I didnt finish my $9 burrito PLEASE DONT GO HERE IF YOU ARE VEGAN there is a perfectly good vegetarian restaurant next door that I saw I will be it said that the salsa was pretty good

Loved the ambiance. Very hip & young crowd. It almost felt like we were in Vegas!! Everyone was dressed up & looked good. We went with a few friends. The portions are meant to be shared. I love that they have a vegan menu. So lots & lots of options for us. We ordered the fish taco: (5/5) amazing, crispy, tangy, perfect size. The tortilla was good too. I usually dont even eat the tortilla because I dont like the corn tortilla but this one was pretty good. Grilled cilantro tofu:(4/5) Ceviche:(4/5) it was a bit fishy for me Veggie tamale:(4/5) it was a bit sweet for me The melon salad:(5/5) very refreshing Our waitress recommended a spicy drink which was soooo good. It was jalapeño , cilantro & I changed it to vodka base instead of tequila. It was so yummy. My friend ordered the toast rider drink & she loved here too. Definitely will be going back.Ranchos Cocina is best.

6/4/16: I was not impressed with the service or food. We did not go during peak hours (only three other tables were occupied) and our waiter was slow and unattentive. Salsa and the food (two ala carte tacos) were just average. We had to wait too long for the check and then walk up to ask if they take it or pay up front. Dont plan to go back. (Rating - 2 stars) 8/9/16: Decided to give this local establishment another try. What a turnaround! Greeted right when we walked in and immediately seated. Waiter (Juan) gave us a few suggestions of his favorites since the menu is so extensive. Other waiters and waitresses filled our waters and asked if we needed anything else as well. A full team effort! Food was very good and the chips and salsa were great and refilled as needed. I am a Rancho Cocina convert. New rating: 4!

Wonderful selection of Mexican food that goes above and beyond the usual Taco Menu and serves food that is locally grown, organic and sustainable. Looks like they did their homework! The servers are friendly as well as the rest of the staff. They kept making us laugh and made the experience a little more personable. The space is unique and makes me think Im in some quaint Mexican restaurant along the cobblestone streets in Guanajuato. There are crosses hanging from the walls as well as photos of Frida and others. For dessert we had RICE cream....and my god... it was better than Ice cream... it had this rich consistency. Yummy! I went to my local Trader Joes in search of it..... You can never go wrong with anything here... from Tofu to the surf and turf burrito... know that you are well taken care of...

6/4/16 - (First rating, 2 stars) - Did we hit them on an off day?? The service was awful from the start and the place wasnt even half full. The waiter was not friendly and seemed put out by us being there. He brought our water and chips/salsa and another guy brought our food. Neither of them ever checked on us again and I had to go up to the counter to ask for my bill. The steak and carnitas tacos were average and not very flavorful. Update, 8/9/16 - Wow, what a totally different visit! Juan was super-friendly from the start and explained the specials and even gave us some suggestions. He was very attentive as he checked on us frequently to refill chips, salsa, and water. The Trio Enchiladas was amazing, Id definitely get again. Thanks to Juan for reforming us...well be back for sure!

This is by far my FAVORITE Mexican vegan spot in all San Diego and theres not that many options when it comes to that type of food. The staff is always on top of it never letting your FREE chips and salsa run out. The food is always hot, fresh and so delicious. The only bad reviews are people complaining about the tables being too small and some guy that alleges being fed a "real" carne asada burrito when he asked for a vegan one , but dont buy into it. Their meat alternatives are just that good! Overall this is the ideal place to get comfort Mexican food on a vegan diet with free chips and salsa and a great ambience. I highly recommend this place:)

Our go-to place for Mexican and Vegan! Yeah, you read it right, Mexican and Vegan is apparently possible lol.I love this place for the fact that its good Mexican food and my gf loves it for the fact that literally almost everything can be made vegan. Parking is a pain because of the area, but they cant really help that and thats ok. The menu is huge and almost everything has a vegan or vegetarian option. Its awesome. Horchatas, vegan or not, are delicious. Ive had like everything on the menu and its all great. And the staff are friendly, attentive, and accommodating. Give it a try.

Good food and friendly people. The vegan burrito tasted more BBQ than Mexican but was still good. The service is slow, so if youre in a rush I would suggest takeout. The people were very friendly and hurrying around everywhere, it was only 2 servers for the whole place. Its not a big place but when everyone wants to order it can slow things down. They have a mini outside eating area out front, but cars are constantly driving by (if youre into exhaust and eating then this is for you). Would like to come back and try more vegan dishes.
