3 highlights about this place below. Came from the East Bay to visit a friend in sac town, and we ate here. Despite my perception of the capital as being an area desolate of good restaurants when compared to SF/Oak, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I think this is one of the best Mexican(?) restaurants Ive been to. Why? 1. Ambiance - elegant but unpretentious. I feel you could come here for a nice dress-up dinner date but also just to grub with the guys. Has an ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon type of feel - high ceilings, indoor greenery, spacious tables and comfy seats. 2. Food - Was impressed from the get-go - the complimentary tortilla chips and bean/mole dip was so good. We had like 5 refills. The tortillas were something amazing and took all their dishes (including my fish tacos) to the next level. Not your plain ol tortilla, but had a good thickness and chew/softness to it. We had the ceviche, guacamole, quesadilla for starters and everything was great. I got the fish tacos and my friends got the skirt steak and featured special plate - the dishes were flavorful but not overdone. 3. Portion per $ - this place aint cheap and the nice ambiance had me scared this would be one of those fancy places where a $17 taco dish would come with one dinky taco. But I was wrong. 3 hefty tacos plus rice and beans on the side was more than filling and totally worth the price. In fact, our group of 5 hungry dudes had leftovers even though one of us didnt order a main dish (we did have 3 appetizers we shared though). Legit.

Just wanted to HIGHLY recommend Zocalos as one of the top kid friendly restaurants to visit in town. I hadnt realized that going with kids in tow was an option given that the location feels elegant, but was AMAZED by how they nailed it on being pro family. This is a great place to teach little ones restaurant manners. Here is a summary of everything that Zocalos did tonight to make it a great dining experience for the kids: 1) rearranged their seating plan so that we could have a booth, 2) awesome happy hour menu 7 days per week ($5 margaritas yall and $5 tacos), 3) super kids menu and reasonably priced, 4) brought the kids juice in cool take home cups (no charge for the drinks or cups), 5) brought the kids churros and ice cream (no charge), 6) the waiters went out of their way to be fast and accommodating, and 7) two of the managers were the ones that kept checking on us and bringing the kids juice and churros, 8) fun coloring and crayons. They really nailed it. I asked if we got some kind of special treatment or if they go out of their way like this for all families. The manager has a 9 month old and was just so totally into kids and welcoming and yes he confirmed that this is how they host families. Also, the other patrons around us were all happy to see the kids at the restaurant too. The noise level is high enough too that it would be hard for anyone to hear if the kids get loud. This restaurant gets a 10+!

I love good Mexican (or pseudo Mexican) restaurants. I have two criteria for judging Mexican restaurants: (1) Do thay make a respectable margarita, and (2) how is their chili relleno? Zocalos margarita is respectable; a sold B+. The chili relleno...meh. It was tasty, but nothing like a traditional relleno. It was fully stuffed with delicious slow-cooked pork, cheese and other goodness. That part was outstanding. However, it was coated with what looked and tasted like corn meal mixed with chili powder, and then deep fried. Not a fan of that approach. The result was a thin, brittle, and slightly burnt-tasting coating that did not adhere to the chili at all. Think deep-fried enchilada, but with a chile pepper instead of a tortilla. My grade for the relleno: C-. The meat inside was dee-lish-us! The service was good (B+), although I found it funny that the server pointed out a dish that is "unique" to Zocalo: Cochinita Pibil. NOT unique at all. Ive eaten at two other Mexican restaurants this week, and both had cochinita pibil on the menu. Its a great dish, and I may order it the next time I am there. Based on the tastiness of the filling in the relleno, I would bet a margarita that it is very good. In sum: I will definitely be going back. A good margarita is hard to come by, and there is much more to explore on the menu.

I went to Zocalo with some friends one summer night. When we received our receipts to pay I wrote down my tip and total authorized amount at the bottom of the merchant copy totaling around $25. A few days later I was looking at my checking account and found a $38 charge to Zocalo. I checked the receipt I saved and saw the discrepancy. I didnt care so much about the amount, but I thought they should know they had made the mistake. I figured that it was, of course, not intentional and that the waiter just struck some keys wrong when plugging in the numbers. No biggy. So, I call the place and explained the situation to the lady that answered. She was very agreeable and understood that I wasnt mad, but just wanted them to know so that maybe it wouldnt happen to others. I would think that they would want to refund the difference as it isnt good business to charge the debit cards of their patrons for more than they are authorized. I was connected with the manager and this is where it went south. He never apologized and had the most rude, arrogant, and offensive attitude about it. The scary thing is he didnt seem surprised or like he was willing to do anything about it. Nothing was ever resolved. He pretty much told me to f@#$ off. I flip the place off whenever I drive by it and refuse to EVER go there again.

One of the Worst Restaurants In Sacramento. They dont follow up with their commitments! My family and I booked the large back room 1 and 1/2 months in advanced for all the December birthdays we have in our families( which is a lot) well as soon as comes to the big day they told us "No, your party is not here on time" Actually half of our party was there on time and we were waiting. The rest of our party was finding parking, which is a horrible time around that restaurant and those two blocks, so they said "NO!" (thats what the manager said) You cant have the back room. Why? because the rest of our party was filling in? Whats up with that?t We spoke to the hostess after the manager left (the one who took our order for the back room) and she admitted that they were in the wrong, but not the manager who was very un-helpful and had a tone with us. But we ended up getting a large back room and great service from Spaghetti Factory who accommodated us in a matter of minutes. So Zocalos you just lost 18+customers, because you were impatient.
