Located in a strip mall in Rancho, not too far from Hwy 50 lies Root of Happiness. Husband thought we would get shot as this place is not in the most savory of locations, but he tends to overreact being a foreigner and all. Its close to Family Fitness and a gun shop. I said, "Im going in. You can stay in the car and risk getting mugged or you can come with me." Walking in, he realized that looks can be deceiving. You are instantly transported to the South Pacific - complete with surf videos, bamboo hanging lights and chilled out music. Booths are on one side, there is a sofa area and a bar with a dozen or so comfy bar chairs. I had experienced kava in Fiji once - we were stuck in a thunderstorm on the ocean in a small boat. The kava root was pounded in a huge bowl and the cloudy brown liquid got passed around to calm us down. Once you take a sip, the analgesic effects kick in with a tongue numbing sensation followed by a subtle mellowness. The brew we had tonight originated from Vanuatu and was more bitter than what I had in Fiji, but really did the trick. You can order a small bowl ("low tide") for $5 and larger one for $8. Yelp check in gets you a small bowl for free! Also got a shot of the paste for $3.50. Highly concentrated, its like natures Xanax. You let it dissolve under your tongue. I bought one to go, I cant handle turbulence well and I have a trip coming up. This will definitely help. For the kava-shy, there are teas and hot chocolates and coffees. They are reasonably priced starting at $2. They dont open until 7:00 pm or so and dont close until 1:00 am. The crowd was mixed, lots of younger types, but everyone was mellow. I mean, you cant really rage with this stuff! Great little cafe, looking forward to coming back!

I came here with some friends not really knowing what to expect. We each had a "sledge hammer" which is comprised of 4oz of their house kava with some sort of kava concentrate mixed in. Its $9, which I wasnt really sure I wanted to give up on something that looked like someone scooped out of a mud puddle outside, but we all went for it. *Gulp* yeah... the flavor is indeed "unique" to say the least. However, the effect is also rather unique. I dont believe I have ever felt so relaxed and content with my surroundings. The feeling is pure and clean. I was totally and utterly relaxed, but still had my wits about me. It makes alcohol feel fuzzy and dare I say, dirty, by comparison. The atmosphere is also clean and healthy feeling. I remember looking around and seeing a wide variety of different types of people from all walks of life. I sat down and spoke with a professor of anthropology at UC Davis who says he frequents the place often. A metal band walked through the door and sat down with us and a conversation about 80s hair rock ensued. Overall, everyone who was there contributed to an overall peaceful and friendly vibe. I will likely come back to this place in the near future. My word of advice, be prepared for the taste. Although that is also part of the fun.

Loved this place. I did not know of Kava at all before seeing it on google maps while searching for bar. I thought of goibg and try it. The whole atmosphere of the place ia very friendly and you wont feel awkward being a total blank about kava. Staff is very friendly, the girl at the counter helped me choose a drink and told me all about it. There are games, books to read and also a outdoor patio area. This is a place where you should go to spend some time. The drink is so soothing you wont feel like leaving for a while and the place is cozy afterall. I read some books and just sat there enjoyed the drink. As per the kava itself, it is little bitter in taste and you should drink it in one go to feel the effect, thats what the lady there told me. The only and only thing I feel negative is that in my mango flavored drink I did not feel any flavor at all. It was bitter and with no flavor of mango. Maybe the kava is so bitter that you dont feel it or the flavor was little less, dont know. Explore this place, its fun. One more thing I would recommend is that if you want food you can take some with yourself as they do not offer anything to eat. Some people were eating boxed food and I asked the lady on bar if its okay to bring and she said yes.

Really dig this lounge with Polynesian decor; the music, chill mood, nice patrons and helpful service in Rancho Cordova, CA - just outside of Sacramento, near Fair Oaks & Folsom. Sometimes theres a DJ, music varies from reggae, rock, techno and islander style beats. They have 2 televisions. Kava is so fun - its a light and enriching head-change without the consequences of alcohol (no hangover, sloppiness, etc.). Go and try it a few times and be open-minded, youll be pleasantly surprised. This establishment is welcomes all people. Everyone seems warm, open, and nice. Good mixture of all ages, the guy-girl ratio is about equal. No drama. The staff is helpful and informative - ask them questions about Kava! Happy Hour from 4-7 - Monday-Friday, as well as Ladies night on Wednesdays with $1 flavored kava shots and $1 low-tides. Lots of options, including teas, Izzy beverages, and food - they offer tasteful bowls of pulled pork, chicken, or veggies over rice white or brown rice. All at very reasonable prices. Please note, I think Kava is an acquired taste, but a highly desirable experience. I highly recommend that new people start with a flavored drink. The kava-kolada is very tasty.

Okay. Before you come here look up the dangers of kava on your liver. Kava is basically a legal high similar to xanax or valium. The place looks nice, but its really just a bunch of people looking for a way to get high legally since kavalactones dont show up on drug tests. Bad thing to happen to the town IMO. Brings out the drug addicts/people just wanting to get high. Places like this will try to convince you that its not bad on your liver but look up yourself. Kava and "flavokawain b" google. I will admit it has a nice look and atmosphere though. 2 stars for that.

This is a great place to go to meet friends. It is a warm, happy place that gives many people in Sacramento a safe haven from the boisterous bar scene. The owners are nice people who care about their customers and are passionate about what they are doing. I like that a very diverse group of people can share a place and engage in meaningful conversations without the "hook up" type pressure that you would typically find at an alcohol establishment. The owner also has great hair.

Wonderful service the owner Tyler and his wife Angel are just magnificent in character and service. I adore every employee there and the drinks are exotic and although they have off earthy taste theyre beneficiary to alter a bitter mood into a smooth sailing attitude. The kava bar offers music and games to play inside and outside they have a cozy lounge area. I love this place. Good food before midnight too!!!
