Came here few days ago with my wife. Looked some reviews about this place and said we are in Chinatown lets just try it. First, as soon as they got us to the table I didnt automatically feel welcome within the restaurant. I felt more as suspects rather than patrons or customers. When our server came he didnt ask us if we wanted any drinks. But another table that sat next to us he asked them and gave suggestions on what they should drink from teas to beers. But I look at my wife and said we werent asked if we wanted tea or a beer. But ok let it slide. The waiter came back with waters for us and asked right away what are you ordering not are you ready to order as if we were being rushed to order lucky for him we knew what we wanted the Kung Pao shrimp, shrimp fried rice and orange chicken do not try the orange chicken at all. Didnt take a photo of the orange chicken sorry about that they kind of gave us the orange chicken 10 mins late. But overall if it wasnt for that guy, should have gotten his name was nice and talking to us before our food got to our table and afterwards, I would give this place 2 stars. This guy wasnt our waiter but more like a host maybe manager. My only regret was not trying their slippery shrimp. The only thing I can say is give it try and see if you like it the Chinese food overall wasnt all that good stay away from the orange chicken. The taste of the food didnt really feel like a restaurant type of taste but more so like the Chinese fast food type just plain and dull. Like I said I forgot that they are somewhat known for the slippery shrimp but after my wife and I experience we wont be going back.

Late dinner, but I freaking deserve it after running here from Staples Center. Yang Chow is smack dab in the middle of China Town. I showed up like 30 minutes before closing on a Monday night (Yelp correction, closes at 9:30 pm). I was literally the only customer here, maybe 2 or 3 other groups walked in after me. You can hear the guys in the kitchen yelling at each other, which was alright I guess, since I can imagine that the noise of a dining crowd would most likely drown them out. No wait for me, since Im not here in the prime hours. -=-Slippery Shrimp-=- At $15 is a bit more than Id wanna pay for a solo dinner, but yall on Yelp keep raving about it. Ill tell ya what I feel about it, its pretty over-hyped. Honestly, I would get the same glorious feeling ordering the firecracker chicken at Panda Express (and I ruv Panda BTW). Thats not to say that I didnt enjoy the food here. It was truly delicious and I licked up every last bite of it. I hoped I wouldnt have burnt the roof of my mouth though, but I was pretty inpatient. Garlic and Orange sauce, that pretty much sums it up. You have the same batter that they use for Orange Chicken on the shrimp as well. Eat it up kids. Its good. Enough to share for 2 or 3.

I would like to express my displeasure about the treatment I receivedon 7/25/13. I was with a large party that was giving a going away party for one of the former staff for the agency that I work for. Everyone at the table paid separately. I ordered some food to go, and made sure that it was on the tab that I created. I paid for it with my Debit Card, but as I proceeded to leave the restaurant, a waiter ran outside, took the food out of my hand, and stated that the woman at the Register said I did not pay for my food. I had to go back into the crowded restaurant, and show my receipt, which she matched up before she says okay. I was embarrassed in front of a lot of people, both inside and outside the restaurant, and did not even receive an apology for the mistake. I spent $38.00 and left a tip, and to be treated in such a manner when everyone else in the party did not get treated like that is a disgrace to your establishment which I heard had a reputation for excellent service. This was my first visit. I was expecting something different and was very disappointed. I emailed the restaurant and got an apology, but another friend went yesterday and had a similar experience. This is crazy!

Was hanging out with a friend in Chinatown and was looking for a place to grab a quick bite. Yelp app to the rescue--it told us this place was worth checking out so we decided to give it a try. Like most establishments in this area it was a little old and and kind of stuck in the 80s decor-wise, but it delivered some solid eats. It was quite busy for a Thursday night, and the clientele was very ethnically diverse--a true little microcosm of LA itself with Asians, Latinos, whites and blacks. Since we werent terribly hungry we just ordered two dishes: the mapo tofu and a beef and veggies dish. I thought it was amusing that the mapo tofu was listed under the "Vegetarian" section even though it had minced pork in it, lol. I guess thats how old this place is: its still vegetarian if it only has little bits of meat. Anyhoo, the flavors in both dishes were very good and we ended up eating a lot more than we thought we would. Service was also pretty good; we will most definitely be back to try their signature "slippery shrimp"!

Sometimes you just want Americanized Chinese food. Deep down inside you know you crave it. Yang Chow will hit the spot. This place has a lot on their menu. Im going to tell you straight up to skip the Slippery Shrimp (which I just call Shrimpery.) Its flavor is....interesting and leaves something to be desired. It has a delicate taste of ranch dressing mixed with a sweet/sour sauce drenched in honey. Ya, try figuring that one out. Their Yang Chow Fried Rice also isnt terribly good. It is very very bland. Youll be craving soy sauce for some sort of flavor. The orange chicken was amazing though. Its flavor had hints of orange and a nice complexity to it with every bite. And it stayed consistently crunchy. Super good. So basically. If you come here. Give the orange chicken a go and anything else on the menu thats not the fried rice or the Shrimpery. Keep in mind, this place is also more expensive than some other near by Chinese restaurants that taste better and are much cheaper.

I went to Yang Chow with a group of nine friends. We didnt have to wait too long before we were taken to a round table with a Lazy-Susan in the middle of the table. The first dish we ordered while drinking our hot tea was Slippery Shrimp. Everyone talks about this pungently delicious dish and I had to finally see for myself what all the buzz was about! We also ordered the Moo Shu Pork. Ask for their sweet plum sauce to enhance the thin Moo Shu pancakes. Place the Moo Shoo pork, into the pancakes and roll them up, almost like eating a soft taco. When the Slippery shrimp arrived it was lightly breaded and cooked with white wine, vinegar, green onions, garlic, ginger root, ketchup and a few other ingredients to create a pop of pleasing aromas and flavors. I loved it. The broccoli and black mushrooms was a tad salty, but the Chicken Low Mein was divine. Before leaving, we finished our pot of tea and opened our fortune cookies. Mine said, “Your life is full of surprises. Embrace them.”
