Have had an awesome 1st experience up in Pleasanton in Northern California and I got to sit down right away. Awesome Sweet Cream Pancakes and Orange Juice! Had an awesome 2nd experience in Buena Park where I found out their Strip Cut Hash Browns and their Ham were both 5-Star excellent. I also tried their Sweet Cream Waffle...Yummy!!! 20-minute wait...no biggie! Had another awesome 3rd experience at the 3-week old La Habra location. California Eggs Benedict were to die for!!! 5-Stars!!! Had to wait 40-minutes the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend for breakfast. The California Eggs Benedict were worth it!!! Also, sign up for their Loyalty Program!!! You get: 1.) A FREE Sweet Cream Waffle, a choice of two pieces of Thick Cut Bacon or Sausage Links (I had one of each!), and two eggs!!! :-D 2.) A FREE HUGE Bear Claw danish and a cup of coffee as soon as you sign up! This restaurant chain of 75 locations is famous for HUGE portions and great food! I got exactly what I expected. My service was excellent, even if my waitress was ultra busy, never stopping during the Memorial Day weekend. She took our drink order within 2 minutes (lol...just water). Our food came super quick, I expected a while after waiting 40-minutes for seats (we got a nice, fully padded booth), but all of a sudden our food was there from a different waiter...around just 5 - 10 minutes. Then within 2 - 3 minutes our waitress came by and saw that my fruit bowl didnt show up with my Eggs Benedict, which I only had one bite of so far, so she announced shed go get it. She came back quick with it. Later on while still digging away, she came back again and asked if everything was alright. Other waiters came by and took our plates as we finished, and they did this with precision and quickness--AHA! A plate is empty...whoosh! It was gone! Then our waitress came by and asked if there was anything else. "Nope!" She got our bill quickly and told us that we pay up front. One person in line at the register, and BOOM, out the door! MY WIFE AND I HAD EXCELLENT SERVICE AND 5-STAR EXCELLENT FOOD FOR OUR FIRST VISIT TO THE LA HABRA BLACK BEAR DINER! Im going there now to get my Bear Claw and coffee for signing up to their loyalty program. Im sure those leaving reviews with not up to par service did have shaking service or are not good with the virtue of patience and want to be satisfied right now, but physics is physics. Physical laws cant be broken. When theres a brand new restaurant, and the line is out the door by dozens upon dozens of people, like anything, theres a learning curve. Give them time to get proficient at what they do, serving tons of people, tons of great food, and be a little patient, and know what to order! If youre a first timer, I recommend Sweet Cream Pancakes, Strip Cut Hash Browns, their absolutely scrumptious Smoked Thick Cut Ham, their California Eggs Benedict, and their Orange Juice...and a little patience. You dont get to 75 restaurants and dozens of dozens of people out the door at 3-weeks old, not being an EXCELLENT RESTAURANT!!! :-D Go to the La Habra Black Bear Diner!!!

My wife actually introduced me to black bear diner on one of our trips to northern California and I fell in love. So when we heard one was opening near our house, we were waiting eagerly for its opening. I was able to surprise my wife on our anniversary morning by taking her there. The food seemed a little under cooked, especially the sausage that we ordered. I told the waitress that we did not want it, and she offered us another one, which I refused. I then had to ask for it to be taken off the check, which she then did. No manager visited the table, and the sausage was taken off. We felt the restaurant had just opened and they were working out some issues. Then this morning, we decided to go in again. We waited a little, which is understandable. The host even gave us a coffee while waiting which was really cool. We were then seated and ordered. My wife ordered the volcano, which is 3 pancakes, 2 eggs cooked over medium, 2 sausages and 2 slices of bacon. The sausage was warm, but the eggs were not cooked to the temperature that she had requested. We had also sent back the bacon because it was flimsy, and not at all firm. The bacon we felt was a preference, but when we received the bacon we were a little surprised that they had taken the bacon from her plate, put it back on the grill, and then brought it back to us, bite marks and all. We sent the eggs back one more time before requesting to speak to the manager. We then had to ask our server for our bacon before getting an order. She apologized, gave us some "bear bucks", and gave us a pie to go. Its going to be a while before we go back, if we go back.

My first experience from Black Bear Diner was from up north and truly enjoyed it . So this location has been open for about 2 months when I asked, so its fairly new and with every business it takes some learning experience . But I have nothing to complain about . They have plenty of free parking , street parking is available also free of charge . The wait was not terribly long , for those that dislike waiting then just a suggestion do not come during peak dining hours . Our food was great with large portions, enough for me to take half of it home . What I enjoyed was my steak and eggs was cooked, just the way I had asked for it to be cooked . Most places when I would order my steak medium , it usually comes out well done . Also the hash browns always cooked all the way thru and crispy on the outside . Simply amazing and our server was great as well . The table are nice and spacious , not super squishy like other diners . It had that comfort feeling of enjoying your food. Had ordered the peach cobbler to go and it was simply amazing . I cant wait to come back and try out more items from their menu. So finally came back and brought more people to try and had another amazing experience. One more plus is they use environmentally friendly to go boxes that can be recycled . I would continue to support businesses that care about the environment.

I have gone a couple of times and loved it. But the last time I went was with family and co workers and it was a bad experience. I completely understand some of the wait times. Its a popular place. But I went with a party of 8 and waited for 25 minutes when there was empty tables. Other people who came in with groups of 3, and 4 were seated fairly quickly. When I asked how much longer I was told 10 more minutes. I tried to order some muffins for my kids since they were really hungry. A guy employee told me ok ill be back with that. Didnt come back.I ended getting frustrated with the service and lack of thereof and left to Chilis. I was seated in less than 5 minutes. I gave a second chance to Black Bear but different location on Knott Ave. I loved my experience the staff was attentive and offered my kids colors while we waited to be seated. The hostess even told jokes to my little ones. I guess location matters. Love Knott location and Santa Ana.
