My godmother was living in Palm Springs at the time and she introduced my parents and myself to Shields, that was in 1972. Since then, I have introduced my husband and son to Shields with every chance we have to visit. I was delighted to find several years ago (when it was for sale) that it didnt close and that new buyers purchased the gardens with the intent to keep it alive for future generations! For there is nothing like this! Love the movie in the cinema...brings back wonder memories. The dates are wonderful...oh the date milk shakes! Others try to copy them all over the valley, the Shields is the BEST! Im ordering on line several of their items for baking this holiday season...thank you for being there for us!

I ordered online 3 lbs of Barhi date that was delivered last week to my home. I gotta say this must be the worst dates i have ever tasted. They must be from last years harvest because they were dry and tasteless. Barhi dates are very very moist honey like flavor and delicious. Shame on them for shipping out such poor quality dates. Im gonna find another place to post my review on how terrible their choice to send me bad old dates. Just an FYI I consider myself an expert on dates. I have been eating dates all my life almost everyday, coming from the capital world of dates…..Baghdad.

What a fun Stop. I continue to seek those fun odd little places and this qualifies. I must admit that in my teens that the desert was a place that was frequently visited, especially since we were only 50 miles from Indio and 30 miles from Palm Springs. So, stopping at Shields was a bit of history and nostalgia combined. Of course we had a date shake, of course we got some dates and of course we watched the movie of the sex life of a date. And when you see it you will wonder how anyone ever figured out how to raise dates commercially! Anyway fun stop in the desert and a date shake will

Highly recommend. Especially for the unusual rainy day in the desert. The date shakes are great and the history of the place is amazing. When it was raining, they were complaining that the dates were going to flood out, which I thought was the coolest complaint. Unfortunately, the roof sprouted a massive leak behind the counter and most of the staff were busy cleaning it up and bailing out. I was kept busy tasting all of the dates, though. If you are in Palm Springs, you should go here.

Date shakes are amazing I now have 6 pounds of crystals because they wont take a return that as soon as I opened I realized my mother was special. I still had the 3 pounds from last year. If i would of realized it i would of refused the damn package. what a waist of $ and of food. I have Celiacs they told me to use it for baking.....do you know how hard it is to bake for celiacs? and how bad and what a waste that is? I will never ever go to shields again!!!

My family has been coming to Shields for decades. I love the date shakes, and we finally got to eat at the café on our last visit. The date pancakes, date burger, and stuffed dates were all delicious, and it was so nice to sit outside near their garden. The store is a little pricey, but we always pick up some dates and date crystals to use in our homemade shakes and smoothies. We go to Shields any time were even close to Indio and Palm Springs.

It was just ok. The service was rather inattentive. The waiter kept walking away before anyone could add anything to the order. Part of the order was forgotten. The food was ok. The eggs Benedict was lack luster. It was very heavy on very mild ham and the muffin was oddly sweet and chewy. French Toast was mostly just bread. Even the date items were lacking in date-ness. For items averaging 13$ a plate, I would not bother.

Friendly staff, Dates are fresh picked and Shields ships all over the world! There date shakes are the Best in the valley to say the least. Breakfast, lunch, an Diner served daily under a beautiful outdoor setting. Visit the theatre for 10 minute show of the sex life of the Dates, and how Shields Date Garden came to be. Take the Spiritual walk, its a beautiful Nature walk for sure! Enjoy your visit!

It really surprised us on how much you could do there, we stopped by to try a date shake and spent a few minutes looking at the stuff in the gift shop, then we saw they had a little more movie theater, and After we did a small walk. The food was really good and the walk would have been great if it wasnt so hot in the freezer desert overall great experience! Wouldnt mind going back again.

This is one of those places from the post war era that used to dominate roadsides all over the United States. Went there recently on a family trip. Enjoyed a date shake and a few other treats. Mostly enjoyed the atmosphere of a bygone era. Still quite a few locals there getting a date shake as well. Loved it. Very friendly folks working there as well.

Love coming here. Theres a ton of date varieties and for free you can taste as many as you like. These are the highest quality dates weve ever had; I only cook with others. The movie is super cute. Weve loved buying local stone fruit there. Get the date shake. We had the huevos rancheros for breakfast which was great. The kids liked the grilled cheese.

I grew up with date shakes. I no longer live in the area but make it a point stop here when I come back home. Although, as a kid I do remember the date shakes having a much stronger date flavor that they do now. This place changed hands several years ago and the new owners seem to really care about the place and preserving its history.

I love bringing my family here, especially people who are visiting the area! It can be a little bit touristy (some of the items they sell are marketed towards tourists). However, they have a wide variety of date related goodies and other fresh foods that are delicious. If its your first time over, you should try one of the date shakes.

Normally, very good. This year I got home with five pounds of dates and they are not good at all. Very dry and stale. They had been refrigerated as it says on the box. I called and explained and was told that they were sorry but nothing they could do. They said the crop was not as good as usual. Very disappointed in this response!

One of my favorite places in the Coachella Valley. Delightful date shakes, all manner of tasty treats in the store, a cute cafe (great seasoned fries!) in the back with indoor and outdoor seating, beautiful grounds to walk through, a lovely small garden gift shop. Great for visiting guests, and for consistent local eats. :D
