In the ultimate act of reckless abandon, I drove the extra miles to V.G. Donut & Bakery, which turned out to be a full fledged donut shoppe with a sizable real estate in the heart of the beach area. Magnificent location, which must have a lot to do with their level of popularity. As a norm, we shy away from donuts and such. Lets just say the we been there, done that, and perhaps it was time to hang up the sweet tooth, without even considering the implications of dental work that comes from plain sugar I purchased about $42+ of basically the donut selection available at about 1PM on Friday 28 of the beautiful year of 2015. Prices above average but not so that it would deter many from buying. Everyone knows here in the US, and probably the whole world through, sweet is the big enticer. To get into the details of the variety that I end up purchasing is not very relevant, for in the end they all had the same amount of sweetness render the selections distinctively unique by any stretch of the imagination. Donuts made in this place very sweet, but what prompted me to give them just 3 Stars, is their fillings. Lets just say that these fillings like apricot, strawberry, are so plain cheaply made, that all respect went out the window. To see 500+ reviewers giving this place close to 5 Stars, is like saying that this place is the mecca of the donut world, and sadly to say it is not so. When I brought 28 donuts selections to our van, and drove back home, it took 1 single bite to be able to tell that besides the level of sugar used in the making, they had not one aspect that separated them from other competitor, and much less elevated the place to a 5 Star rating, unless of course, we were all judging on a 10 Star rating system, but we are not. Perhaps the location causes ratings to jump up, after all a day at the beach makes anyone hungry and careless as to what they put in the body. Sugar is not nutritional at all, so when I fell for the hoopla of this place, and purchased a silly amount of these morsels, only to have to freeze the majority, for the five people in the house, including myself, found them dangerously sweet for such a lazy and indulging crowd. 3 Stars.

Love their gluten free selection. Huge variety, not only donuts, but lots of pastries &a breads too. I definitely recommend this place if you are craving something sweet and youre on the run. It can definitely get a little busy sometimes. And they do tend to run out of certain pastries depending on the time of the day (thats why I suggest calling before you go). Their donut selection is classic. The variety is not crazy or incredible, but the consistency of the donut quality is fantastic. The donuts always taste the same, and they melt in your mouth. Some donut places you go to give you a different type of the same donut everytime you go there. But this place at least gives you the same quality delicious donut everytime. The pastries are exceptional, too. There are lightly sweetened and very sweet pastries, great variety for every type of sweet tooth. Dont miss out on trying the scones or muffins, which are soft on the inside and full of flavor. I have to admit they are very well cooked. One of my favorites is a the nut and berry bar! Lastly, their gluten free selection is very versatile. They have cookies, macaroons, fudge brownies, etc. I recommend this place if you want to get your fill of sweetness and/or if you want to get a gift or pastries and sweets for an event or party.

I like this place a lot I went here with my boyfriend. We just happened to see Bakery and went in and I cannot tell you how many different items that they have available for any and everybody thats possibly choose. They have Donuts, cakes, lemon bar, cookies, pie even. Oh my God I have a mini apple pie and that is my favorite thing. So anyway the service is pretty cool there seems to be a bunch of teams there that are still in high school and they all seem to get along with each other and as a result they have a very good attitude. Theyre all in a very good mood, theyre all very helpful immediately and really keep genuine Smiles on their faces. The customer service was absolutely great and so far my boyfriend and I are working on our second piece of sweet from here out of 6 items. So far we are very very very very happy with this visit I gave this a 4 stars because out of 6 items, we only liked two. But the two I liked were really good to me. Def. Worth it. But I spent $20 on 6 items to only like 2. The selection and service was good enough to have 4 stars. I enjoyed the lemon bar cheesecake and the mini apple pie

I ordered my wedding cake from VG in May and was beyond pleased with their service. Not only did they make two WHOLE cakes for me to try (my office-mates appreciated that) to decide flavors, but when I came in to order my cake, they gave me my additional donut order (for my office that morning) for free as a thank you for ordering my cake with them. Talk about customer service! They even make you a NEW top layer on your one-year anniversary on the house! And I havent even mentioned how tasty their cakes are! Everyone at the wedding raved about the cake (we did the bottom layer Bavarian cream with fresh strawberries, the middle layer banana, and the top layer carrot) and the prices were very reasonable compared to other shops. I wish they were closer (I live in Santee) but thats probably better for my waistline... As a testament to this shop, I just ordered a cake for a friends baby shower from them. If Im willing to drive all the way up from Santee, that should say something. These guys rock! :-) -Suzanne

There is a small donut chain in Nebraska called Daylight Donuts that is the best in the world, and like some sort of sad donut junkie Ive tried these little fried bastards all over the US searching for the same sort of cholesterol high with no luck. Every time somebody would bring donuts to work Id share this same lament. When I moved to Encinitas one of my coworkers pointed out that Id be close to VGs and I needed to try it out. And I did. And it was pillowy, doughy, sticky, delicious bliss. So incredibly good. I have a moderate health-nut coworker who doesnt do sweats and treats. When I brought them to work I offered one to him. He turned it down saying "I only eat donuts if theyre from VGs." And then I told him, and then all was right in the world. Selection was excellent, the staff was quick and friendly, prices were fair, and there is plenty of parking. Im not emotionally ready to admit that this place may be better than my hometown, childhood donut place, but at some point I may have to.

#spookyspot challenge! I discovered VGs when I was working at DivX. A co-worker turned me on to this bakery and we utilized it all the time when we needed special cakes for work. This then bled into my entire family loving VGs and getting cakes and donuts there whenever they could. Now, that I live in a different city I still try to stop by VGs whenever I get near it in San Diego. The hardest part is not over buying items since I know I wont be back for a while. I also highly suggest VGs for a special Halloween cake. If you dont want to pre-order you can typically just walk in and check out all of their different Halloween cakes in the case or spinning around in their moving case. They typically have some really great ones that you can just run in and pick up. So, if you ever need a cake for a special occasion, holiday, or just for fun check out VGs and be SURE to go for donuts whenever you can.
