So, i asked Sugar and Scribe to cater (make and deliver) the desserts for my wedding at the end of this past February. Any time i called, i was well taken care of, and even continued to be well recieved through many email consultations. Since i lived on the other side of the country, i didnt actually get to come in for a tasting until a week before the wedding. But, the tasting was a lot of fun, and a lot less stressful than i had predicted. The owner even allowed me to bring in my little black pug, which always makes me feel better. We had lots of yummy flavors to pick from, it was hard to narrow it all down. But, once we did, she even let me get really creative with one of the cupcake decorations. It was all very pleasant and relaxing. im definetely disappointed i dont live in the area so i could just pop in whenever i wanted a sweet treat. As far as the day and the treats went, everyone LOVED them! The brownies in particular were gone SO QUICK! My husband and i didnt even get one, but thats ok, i got my favorite (The Orangesicle) and he got his favorite (The Tieramasu). Thank you guys so much for everythingg! We wish you nothing but happiness and success in your everyday life and your business!

Went for brunch on Sunday while hosting some visiting family and The Cottage was too packed. At first they promised us less wait time so we were seated in about 15 mins. Unfortunately the server came to take our order, didnt write anything down then after 45 minutes we were told we had a new server and due to a "kitchen glitch" our order was taking a little longer! She only gave us a quick sorry and gave us 2 pastries on the house which didnt help my gluten free starving status! Then when the food finally came the server put asparagus on the side instead of in my scrambled eggs. Another quick sorry from the food runner. Funny thing there were a bunch of empty tables around so not sure how they messed up this bad. Would have been great to have had a manager stop by or perhaps give us a break on our bill for this terrible experience that ruined our brunch for our visiting guests. Will def be going back to the Cottage next time. Even though theyre busy they have stellar service and food comes out fast!

Pleasantly relaxed atmosphere and excellent location with enough parking - what more can one ask for. Well, as it happens, more can be asked for here to get to the 5 star rating. First thing we noticed upon entering the place was the attitude of the staff, particularly 2 of them, who seemed to be rushing people rather than inviting and serving. Bad start. Order was placed quickly and delivered in reasonably short time. Heres what we had. Beef and Guinness stew - tasted boring and the chunks of beef were too dry. Chicken tortilla soup - level of salt rendered it inedible. Not exaggerating. Shepherds pie - looked a lot better than it tasted, but better than the previous 2 items. Barbacoa beef sandwich - one taste: salt; decent bun. Last - bacon and cheese toasted sandwich - best of all items - well seasoned, good proportion of cheese to bacon on tasty batard bread. Couldnt have coffee as we felt rushed and took the leftover food with the hope it would taste better at home; it didnt.

We havent been to the La Jolla village in a long time. So on our visit this beautiful summer day we strolled past the Sugar and Scribe Bakery. We had no prior knowledge of it, but it looked nice from the outside and there were several patrons. So we went in for a coffee and pastry. Bad decision! The coffee was as bitter as I have ever tasted. Even with cream, it was totally undrinkable. The blackberry and cheese Danish I ordered was obviously MORE than a day old. It was dry, hard, and the toppings were not fresh. Again, unpalatable. Service was mediocre. We had to wait for the bill and finally went to the register to pay and were summarily told "Pay your server." 20 bucks down the drain!

Had a late lunch here today, just the kind of place I like with cuteness and light, fresh food. Best hot chocolate, perfect salads, delicious Slingo scramble. The crusty goodness on the grilled cheese was just a tad too crusty, the Irish brown bread had a wee spot of mold and our waiter, though nice and attentive, was surprisingly awkward, new to the job is my guess. The other staff were more natural and super friendly and made us feel welcome. I left happy and satisfied. Well go back and maybe try some treats!

Adorable setting in La Jolla. So nice to see a sweet bakery shop that also serves breakfast and lunch. I ordered the chicken avocado salad. It was great. My friend ordered the eggs benedict. One of the eggs was raw, which we will forgive them for. They gave her mini cupcakes to apologize since she didnt let the server know until we were done eating (too late to replace it). So all is forgiven. The important part was that they made it right once they knew. Thats good customer service.

Sugar and Scribe made the most beautiful gluten-free pastries for our wedding. We settled on the red velvet for our cake and ordered pie bites in strawberry-rhubarb and mixed berry and everything was so delicious. The red velvet was super rich and chocolatey plus moist and you would never know it was gluten free. On top of being everything being scrumptious the cake was gorgeous, semi-naked with flowers it was so beautiful my dessert table was stunning.

The 5 star reviews dont lie. This place is great. We initially stopped by Cottage across the street, but after realizing it was a 2 hour wait, we decided to check out Sugar and Scribe. It was certainly a good call. All you have to do is grab a table, check out the menu and go up to the counter to order your food. The pancakes were excellent and the bacon was cooked perfectly. Service was fantastic as well. Definitely worth another visit.

We ordered an elderberry naked cake for our wedding cake, and it turned out amazing! We didn’t need any fancy cake covered with fondant and decorated with jewels and flowers to please us or any of our guests who shared in the enjoyment of it. The simplicity of our cake not only looked great on its own, it was delicious! The cake was soft, moist, and not too sweet. I am not a dessert person at all, but I would definitely come back for this cake!

Breakfast here has a lot of delicious items you rarely see like Shepards pie, beef stew, or full Irish breakfast. Had their shepards pie and waffles and the pie was a well balanced skillet and really wowd us. Restaurant has a pretty and open design and their cakes are also beautiful

Sugar and Scribe is one of my favorite places to go in La Jolla, variety of irish and italian pastries and comfort food, its a bakery that offers breakfast and lunch they have traditional Irish plates such as Sheppards pie and the workers are very friendly, great vibe, great food.
