What did Rodney Bear say to Pinoy Bear looking for a great meal to eat? "Ober der, Hungry Pinoy Bear!" Free bear claw & coffee coupon & free dessert with entrée purchase coupon Warm & inviting, like a sportmans lodge or a chateau in the mountains, Black Bear Diner serves up classic American comfort food in pre-recession portions. With my coupons tightly held within my kung-fu grip paws, the Coupon King triumphantly made his inaugural visit to this former Hofs Hut. Bottomless Java City coffee- Im not a huge coffee aficionado, being happy with Gevalia coffee at home, but I can tell when Im drinking good coffee. Java City coffee wasnt too bitter or had a lingering aftertaste. About a couple dozen half & half creamers, and its bottoms up. Classic bear claw- This was excellent! I had a choice of classic or fruit-filled. The attendant recommended classic, so I went with that. Rich, buttery flaky layers of croissant dough. Not too sweet, unless you avail yourself of that sweet icing on the side. The bear claw may be a diet buster, but if you do decide to fall off the calorie wagon, this should be your first choice! California bacon Bears Benedict- Split English muffin, thick-cut bacon, avocado, spinach, grilled tomato slices & 2 poached eggs covered in Hollandaise sauce. Choice of hash browns, red potatoes or fruit. Stick to your ribs, baby! The poached eggs had a romantic explosion of runny yolk once lovingly caressed by my fork, only to be tenderly sopped up by morsels of English muffin. The thick slices of bacon provided the salty unctuousness that bacon gives a dish, the avocado that healthy & welcoming fatty creaminess. The hashbrowns, while good, werent crunchy like other diner places, but they tasted great kicked up a notch with Black Bear Diners chipotle sauce. Maybe its because Im a sex symbol, but I was also given a bowl of fruit, as well. Even though its supposed to be choice of that, hash browns or red potatoes. Hey, being sexy does have its benefits ;p Great hearty dish! Olgas bread pudding- If all that wasnt enough, here comes another sinfully delicious dessert. Upon recommendation of the attendant, I went with Olgas bread pudding for dessert, consisting of bread, heavy whipping cream, eggs, vanilla & topped with pecan praline sauce & whipped cream. The piece de resistance, its a gluten avoiders worst nightmare. Not cloyingly sweet, it was Shangri-La with each spoonful. Service was great. My attendant & the workers moving in & out were friendly & hospitable. Asking for recommendations, I was quickly given spot-on choices. I was even called "Sweetie" *giggle* Plentiful seating, with booths, tables & counter seating. In addition, there is a large patio area with gas heaters to keep nice & snug. Parking is in a small private lot that can be hard to come by during peak hours. Bears adorn all the nooks & crannies of Black Bear Diner, to go with the cheerful wooden décor. Sitting in the wooden barstool was surprisingly comfortable. Nifty bear gifties are available for purchase for those looking for a souvenir. With delicious food in ginormous portions, all residing in a homey environment, Black Bear Diner is a great place to grab something to eat. To top it off, signing up for their email club gives you free perks, which is what enticed me to stop by in the first place. All the food I had, including tax = $12+. A great deal! But, with breakfast/lunch/dinner served all day, I definitely would come by sans coupons. But, please dont tell anyone, as I have my reputation as the Coupon King to uphold ;p Highly recommend! My daughter brought me here for Mothers Day for breakfast. We knew that it would be a wait for dining. They had two hostesses at the front that day. First hostess told me without asking that the wait would be 35 min. and I was surprised. She then stated that the wait looked longer due to the larger groups, but since we were a party of 3 we would be seated quicker due to the size of our party. Realistically I expected at least 45 min. but after an hour rolled, I asked the second hostess how much longer before our name is called, then informs me that it will be about another hour. One hostess says 35 min. the second hostess states a 2 hour wait. Had I been informed of that from the beginning, we would have dined elsewhere. I even spoke to the Manager (Tony) and informed him that his two hostesses need to be on the same page by communicating to each other on the waiting time that they are giving to the customers. The Manager put on a fake apology and seemed annoyed by my complaint. Then after being seated, I viewed a stack load of food plates waiting for the servers to pick up the orders, that was another sign we would be waiting a lengthy time before we even actually got our food. Breakfast turned into a late lunch. Order was wrong, service was poor, food was large portions, but I will “NEVER” come back. Good service over weighs whether the quality of food.

Met my friend here for breakfast and I really enjoyed our meal. There are a lot of options and the portions are big. The pricing seemed a little high but the food was delicious, especially the sweet cream pancakes. Overall everything was great, I got the grizz which came sweet cream pancakes, eggs, bacon and sausage. I would have loved some hash browns but I definitely left full so that would have been overkill. I sat near the machine they make their fresh squeezed oj with and as a tech lover watching the machine work was cool and so I did order the oj, it was delicious, though pulpy. Id definitely recommend this place and will probably come here again even though its about 30-45 minutes away depending on traffic. Pricing was on the high side and service seemed a little slow but overall I enjoyed my meal.

Black Bear Diner is a great place. Was a little worried that this BBD might be a tourist trap due to its location, but thanks to Robert (our server and true professional) and the food quality -and OMG the quantity, our visit was one that will drive us to come back the next time we come home to Cali. Side note: Ask for Robert as your server. You will not be disappointed. This guy works his tail off to make sure you are happy. The food alone is good, but the service Robert provided took it over the top. We learned during our visit that he has been working at this location for over 20 years (previously this location was another restaurant - Hofs Hut). Im sure he has a loyal following and is a true asset to the BBD company. Heres to hope that Black Bear Diner will make it to Texas some day SOON.
