Tonight I became an official Canaanite. Not because I became a landowner in the historical region of Canaan, but because I dined at Canaan Restaurant in Artesia. Ive frequented this shopping center many a time, since Sea Palace was still open, which is now Uni Mart. Id shop for consummables & then walk next door to Luisa & Sons Bakeshop for some quality Filipino sweets & merienda. I just never got around to dining at Canaan Restaurant. I can now say, Im so glad I did. Entering the restaurant, there was just enough seating to not seem too cramp. There were 9 round tables w/ Lazy Susans & square tables that seat 4. After being seated, we received a pot of green tea & salted peanuts. Nice! After flipping through the menu, we decided on the salted fish & chicken fried rice, shrimp & pork wonton soup & stinky tofu. Salted fish & chicken fried rice - Delicious. Great fried rice with bits of salty fish, which added great flavor. Im Asian, so Im used to salt. I cant wait to dive into the leftovers for breakfast tomorrow. Shrimp & pork wonton soup - A winner. Simple, yet effective. Around 10 succulent shrimp & pork wontons, leafy vegetables (which Im assuming were bok choy/kai choy) & a delectable broth, served piping hot. Im a soup guy. I generally prefer Asian soups because of all the flavors on display - sweet, sour, salty, bitter & sometimes umami. The senses are titillated with each spoonful of soup. The complexity is what endears me to Asian soups, and of course because Im of Asian heritage, too (or am I Pacific Islander? Oy vey!). Needless to say, I loved this soup. Stinky tofu - Ive seen the Bizarre Foods episode where Andrew Zimmern dines on Taiwanese stinky tofu, and I believe myself to be an adventurous foodie, who can perhaps be on par with the Zimmern. So with both great delight & to a lesser extent, trepidation, I had a plate of stinky, fermented tofu in front of me, with cabbage adorning it, awaiting my virgin tastebuds. First bite & here are my thoughts- The texture is that of fried tofu. I like fried tofu, which I dip in garlic vinegar & soy sauce at home. Its quite nice. But, the flavor. Im having a conundrum attempting to describe it. Imagine the taste of the smell of fresh, yellow baby poop. Stinky tofu has that not quite right, off taste. Physiologically, my body was telling me "Dont eat it, dont eat it". Fortunately, I didnt gag, but its a hardcore foodie food. Not for the weak of heart. Its strange, but I had a hard time eating each wedge of stinky tofu, but after I was done with it, I wanted another. Maybe it was my egotistic, pseudo-machismo at play, but I wanted to finish the plate. I only managed to finish half, though. The sauce & the sweetness of the cabbage helped. I came to the conclusion that stinky tofu isnt for me. However, I defend anyones right to eat it. I dont like artwork by Jackon Pollock, nor do I like grapefruit. Kudos to those that do. Thats the feeling I have with stinky tofu. To end the meal, we received complimentary mung & green bean porridge. It was served room temp and had just a little sweetness. I liked the fact that it wasnt overly sweet, but I would have preferred to have the porridge brought out cold or hot. Wouldve been more appetizing to my taste, but it wasnt bad. Looks like Ive found another great Taiwanese/Chinese restaurant in my hood. Im very interested in coming back to dine on their bao, lamb dishes, hot pots & the various pork intestine plates. The place was busy, and I can see why. Highly recommend! NOMNOMONMNOMNOM Caveat - No fortune cooke :(

My family & I have been frequenting this wonderful Taiwanese restaurant for the past 20+ years, and now its my sons favorite. 3 generations of Canaan love & still going strong! We have never been disappointed by either the food (always comes piping hot & generous portions) or the service. The Kung Pao Chicken, House Style Shrimp, Szechuan Eggplant & Fish Filet in Black Bean Sauce are some of our all-time favorite dishes. The lunch specials are great too, great price and perfectly portioned for one person. Canaan also own Milk and Honey a few stores down. You can ask a waiter or waitress for Milk & Honeys menu and they can order and bring your order to you. :)

Sweet and Sour Soup, Beef and Broccoli, Salt and Pepper Chicken, Eggplant with Brown Sauce... Soooo good. I like coming here with a few friends and eating family style. We like the sweet and sour soup cause their other ones are hit or miss sometimes. Parking is easy but this place can get pretty packed. The staff do do best though. If your name is close on the list, they will usually ask you to place your order in to help you get your food faster when once you sit down.

We order from here for lunch at work all the time. I love it, the food is always great and a good size portion for the price. The food is spiced just right. I love the containers for delivery or to go... they are plastic not the regular styrofoam and with a clear top you can see the food and not have to open all of the lunches to find which one is what you ordered. I can not actually review the location of the restaurant since I have never been,

Very, Very delicious! My girlfriend and I came here for dinner to celebrate a late Valentines Day! Everything is family style, so if you order too much expect some leftovers. We ordered Shrimp and Pork Dumplings, Orange Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Salt and Pepper Pork Chops, and Singapore Noodles. Everything was delicious and, yes, we had pleanty to take home for another meal (maybe two) for the both of us. Well definitely be back! :-)

The food is OK nothing amazing. The service can be spotty. The workers have to be waved at the right moment, they do not stop on their own to ask if anything else is need. The food arrived too far apart from each item. One dish is cold by the time the next arrives. The individual serving plates are too small. Things fall out. It was like having a tea party with a child.

Came with a craving for soup dumplings, xlb, and left with disappointment. This is a prime example for a lack of good authentic Chinese restaurants in Cerritos. The xlb barely have any soup in them, and the skin is super thick. The top part of the dumplings where all the folds meet is so thick, its like an extra dumpling of its own.

Amazing Chinese place if you like Chinese style breakfast such as sweet soy milk, egg cakes, and Chinese donuts. The taste is pretty authentic and Ill for sure visit this place again next time I visit cypress. I took one star off because they dont serve breakfast on Sunday and the wait time is a little long.

Authentic Taiwanese tranditional food. 目前吃到第一家臺灣傳統餐館,點了肉粽,五更腸旺,臭豆腐,獅子頭,都非常到地!

Love this place. Really feels like home cooking and the portions are huge. Good place to gather a bunch of co-workers for lunch to order a lot of dishes. Flavor is is good and not too oily or salty. This place gets pretty busy at dinner so be prepared to wait.
