"When youre ready, come & get it. Na na na na, na na na na." - "Come & Get It", Selena Gomez Increasing the size of my ample Bombay booty, one bite at a time w/ the lunch buffet at Ashoka the Great. Ashoka, the Indian emperor who converted & spread Buddhism throughout the vast terrain of India after the destruction of Kalinga, would be proud of the lunch buffet at the restaurant that shares his namesake. Heres why I prefer Ashokas lunch buffet over The India Restaurants- -more expansive choices -more dining room -lower cost For only $8.95, Indian food lovers can choose whatever catches their fancy- Quick! Someone call 911! Im about to commit murder on the buffet ;P A basket of garlic naan greeted me as I was about to commit foodicide- Buttery soft, warm & chewy. Perfect vehicle to sop up all the sauces. This alone is worth the buffet price. Plate 1 (Tandoori chicken, goat curry, saag paneer, aloo bengal)- The tandoori chicken was moist & tender, the goat was succulent & the saag paneer was absolutely delightful Plate 2 (Forgot to take a pic, but had daal, paneer curry, chaat, a samosa etc) Plate 3 (More Tandoori chicken, goat curry & saag paneer)- Dessert plate 1 (Gajar halwa, ghulab jamun, lentil dessert, mangos w/cream, assorted fruits)- Gajar halwa wasnt too sweet, the ghulab jamun was fluffy & soft, the lentil dessert reminded me of the stuffing inside hopia monggo & the mangos w/cream were frozen deliciousness. Dessert plate 2 (Mostly the same but w/ rice pudding & grapes)- The rice pudding was cold & refreshing. The grapes were sweet. I now look like a full-term pregnant woman, ready to go into labor any day now. Lots of seating, with rows of tables in the middle w/ booths at the perimeter of this rectangular shaped restaurant. My white cloth napkin became all shades of colors after wiping my grubby paws on them while finishing up the food carnage. In between bites, I watched TV on Ashokas two flatscreens. One had a cricket game one & the other displayed Indian music videos. Entertaining, to say the least. Street parking is available in front for $1.50/hr, w/ a 3 hr max. I just parked down a ways by Guppy Teahouse & had a leisurely stroll to the restaurant. Highly recommend the lunch buffet at Ashoka the Great. A vast array of food choices are available, all at the low price of $8.95. You cant beat that w/ a wiffle ball bat. Now, if youll excuse me. Im going to put on some elastic shorts & start up my Zumba DVD. I have to burn the trillion calories I just ate in order to be bikini ready for summer ;P NOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM

Adding to the chorus of positive reviews: went there today for lunch. Ive been to this place many times for dinner, but today was my first exposure to the wonder of their lunch buffet. Dinner here is good, and Id go as far as saying its the best Punjabi style Indian restaurant I have been to in Southern California. However it is not so many miles better that it really merits a special trip if youre not already nearby. However, dear God that lunch buffet is amazing. I usually dont really like Indian buffets. The usual crowd favorites, warmed over and sitting around, and not very tasty. But Ashokas buffet is a monument near worthy of restaurants name! There was a great variety of both vegetarian and non vegetarian entree options, as well as chaat, appetizers and dessert. The restaurant was moderately busy, even at 2 PM on a Monday, filled with a largely Indian crowd (never a bad sign at an Indian restaurant), so I didnt get the idea that the buffet had been sitting there in its chafing dishes for much time - lots of turnover. My favorite dishes today were the potato and turnip curry (who doesnt like starch?), the creamy dhal makhani, the cauliflower and potatoes, and the goat curry (I really like goat meat in curries because the meats string taste holds up well to the spice). Nothing was very spicy, but it was all flavorful and fresh. Service was as expected in a buffet situation, just fine. I recommend this place very highly!

Ive been coming here since the 90s, each time experiencing a FEAST at an affordable price for family and friends. Having lived in different far away places in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, I have come to appreciate and enjoy the different delicacies and all kinds of ethnic food, especially HOT and spicy meat and vegetarian dishes. My wife and most family members and friends prefer the milder Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian, Continental dishes. Very similar to classy and higher priced dishes served in English Indian restaurants and Chicago. In my opinion, I would rate Ashoka is the best restaurant serving One Price Buffet lunch. Sadly, the other restaurant in Brea, closed a few years ago due to location and clientele. Ive never experienced the complaints made at YELP. Please be open minded. If youre late, there can be more bones than meat left in the serving plate. This place is popular and you can only imagine what happens when there is a long line outside and the place gets busy; but in all fairness, the management and staff are courteous. For me, the food selection has always been great !!! Get the Gulab Jaman for your dessert!

The food was not the best Ive ever had. I dont know if Im too picky but the chicken in the curry seemed to have too many things (fat, nerves and so on) other than meat. Im am not a fan of spicy food, but their curries were of moderate to slightly high spiciness. There was a curry that seemed to be all veggies which was not that spicy at all, for those who cant handle the heat. The food taste was good overall, however. The naan didnt arrive till we were almost done with our first dish (my last) of food. It was slightly busy (about 1/3 of overall capacity) on this Saturday, so if you like eating your naan with your food and it is busy, wait a good 5-10minutes before grabbing your first plate. The best part was absolutely the desserts, carrot pudding, gulab jamun, coconut rasgulas, and a few others. The carrot pudding was dry, unlike another Ive had with syrup, yet it was a lot better in flavor as it seemed to have more ingredients in it. Id give this 3 stars but the thing I really enjoyed from this place was the dessert.

This is my new favorite indian restaurant in LA. The food was savory and the serving sizes were good. The beers were reasonably priced and the meal was inexpensive. We got to glance at the weekend buffet (arrived too late to partake), and we were impressed with the spread. So why four stars? The service. We went for long periods without having our water refilled. Our appetizer came out almost five minutes before its associated dipping sauce, and trying to order and obtain a glass of beer was a long ordeal that nearly led to me canceling it. Despite the service we will be going back for sure and, who knows, maybe it was a one-off type of thing.

Absolutely horrible experience. Pathetic service and extremely dirty servering practices. Served soup in bowl with the bottom plate dirty with sauces in it. Never heard butter chicken has more capsicum than uncooked chicken pieces. I would never recommend this restaurant. The girl on front desk has a hell lot of attitude like she is some freakish billionaire and people eating here are homeless. Extremely pathetic attitude of guy taking order. He told us he cant serve appetizer during dinner as restaurant was too busy.. Never ever would recommend anyone.
