Oh yea. Ive been going to what i thought was "the spot" for years now. Katana Ya in el cerrito. I would say theyre still good...but no where close to the quality of Sugata .Before that I sampled various sushi bars in the berkeley, albany and el cerrito areas after growing tiered of the sub-par offerings given by party sushi. One word description of Sugata...fresh. the creamy textures & the sweetness of the fish associated w/ great sushi is here. The salmon was full flavored & buttery & the yellowtail was soooo sweet. We didnt try any of the special rolls, just nigiri & a couple of handrolls. It was all very good. Except maybe the halibut. It wasnt the quality of the fish, it was the green onion the put on top of it. Easy fix though...next time no green onion. I could go on about this place especially since i still have flavors still in my mouth but i think you get the picture. Needless to say...Ive found "THE SPOT."

$20 a dish was pretty overpriced for what it was. The fish was pretty good quality at least but the rolls didnt hold together well. I couldnt escape the feeling that maybe they thought we looked poor or something because they seemed really cold towards us but friendly to visibly wealthy people coming in. Probably wouldnt return.

The sashimi here is among the best I have ever had. The staff is quick and knowledgeable and very friendly. They have a semi-traditional "tatami" room that seats around 6 comfortably with a dugout for stretching your legs. Make reservations early as they fill up fast.

Good neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Place is not very large, but menu is quite extensive and there appears to be a lot of specials on the boards around the room. Prices are reasonable but not super-cheap.

Amazing food. Bad service. Quite pricey for the total experience. We had to wait about 30 min to get served some of the food we order. Appetizers were served after another 15 min.

Fantastic local sushi and japanese food in family run business. Fish is super fresh--only place I will go other than Kirala in the east bay.

Cool little hole in the wall - you could walk right past and never see the place. Intimate old school sushi. Warm and friendly - good food.

Literally the worst sushi I have ever had. Dry, flavorless. Served with looks of disapproving judgement by the waitress
