I visited this restaurant tonight and was reminded of how the far we have come as well as how far weve got to go. I ordered a dish that was over cooked and the portion size was significantly less than usual. I politely informed the waitress that I was not happy with the food and didnt want it. Her demeanor was as if we were disgusting to her and if she could set me on fire and get away with it she would. I assured her that I wasnt upset I just didnt feel the meal was worth the $27.98 I was spending. She goes and get her manager who was VERY LOUD and disrespectful to me in front of my teenage boys. After I wouldnt give him the satisfaction of an argument he threatened to call Trussville police on me. I had not eaten from the platter and could not understand the problem, but I had to set an example for my boys. This MANAGER clearly tried to provoke me into rage. Literally degrading my intelligence and hollering at me. I politely asked him to please not make a scene by loud talking me. He was LIVID that I was only willing to pay for what my sons had eaten. He literally stood over me while I was sitting pointing his hands in my face and over our food on the table. I could not believe this was really happening. I told him yeah call Trusville police. He screamed,"not a problem. I will!" So my sons, scared out of their minds, tried to convince me to pay and lets leave. I told them we did nothing wrong and just relax. While waiting for the police to arrive I called my wife to inform her of what was going on. About 15 minutes later he comes back with my bill with the item removed from the bill, acting as if he was a professional. Why he decided to treat me like this I dont know but, Im willing to bet my skin color had a lot to do with it. It was the look in his eyes and the way he talked down to me. My sons have been scarred theyve heard about this on tv but has never experienced this in person, but more importantly I had to be that example for them that they dont have to lose their cool to prove a point. NO worries Trussville Cajun Steamer... I will NEVER step foot in your store again. Im one less you dont have to bother with. Sad day...

I like the cuisines of New Orleans quite a bit, if only because its such a concentrated regional cooking. Its not easy to find outside of the area, though in many cases when someone goes to the trouble of establishing a restaurant that features the Cajun and Creole cooking, its bound to be pretty good. Cajun Steamer is no exception.
I wanted to get a good sampling of the classics, so I went with a soup and three side dishes (props to having that as an option on the menu): seafood gumbo, chicken and sausage jambalaya, crawfish etoufee, and red beans and sausage. The gumbo I enjoyed quite a bit, with a hearty base of Holy Trinity in a okra-thickened stock that had a surprising amount of bite for what I would consider most folks would find appropriate. The etoufee I also enjoyed, if only because it was essentially the same thing as the gumbo, only with little pieces of crawfish swimming around. My main complaint about both dishes is that there werent many sizable chunks of meat in either. The same cannot be said about the jambalay, which was a dark tomato-featured version of the dish with plenty of helpings of both chicken and sausage to make it a very hearty side dish. Similarly, the red beans and rice were beefed up with the addition of sausage, and while I didnt think it was necessary to add the meat to the dish, I certainly didnt complain.
With some very fine-looking main courses, I probably wouldnt spend my time exploring the sides again, but rest assured that Cajun Steamer is definitely the real deal when it comes to the cooking of Louisiana, and any time we can find a restaurant to help spread that cooking to other parts of the country, Im a fan.

I dined at Cajun Steamer with my family after church. 3 of us ordered the shrimp and grits. My mother and sister have eaten this dish here before and said it was very rich, creamy and a little spicy. But when it arrived, the shrimp had no seasoning, the grits were ok but not as I expected and no spicy kick at all to the dish. All 3 of us had to add salt, Tony Shasta and hot sauce just to give it some flavor. In the middle of the meal I stopped the manager and asked if they changed something because I expected a creamier and spicy dish and he said its the same recipe its a wine based sauce they use. It was a true disappointment. Then once my mother got home she found the original menu posted for this dish and sure enough it was not made the original way. What makes me angry is that the manager lied. It should have been just as easy for him to tell me the truth then to lie! Now we not only feel cheated out of our money, but we struggled to halfway eat a bad substitute for what could have been a delicious meal! SMH!!

We were not impressed with the Cajun Steamer. My boyfriend ordered the shrimp plate and received the total of seven shrimp. Most of the platter consist of fries. His meal also came with an order of two mysterious stuffing balls but it can only be described as a heap of trash, it literally taste the way a dumpster smells. I, on the other hand, ordered the shrimp creole and was satisfied with taste but wished it was a little on the warmer side. Also, waiters are dressed as if they just rolled out of bed. We give ONE star because the beer was cold. (But expect to pay a dollar an ounce for a mixed drink)

This restaurant used to be one of my favorite restaurants. However that has since changed. From lackluster service, to mediocre food and drinks, Im not sure what has happened but its not the same. Went by there today, and the bartender was somewhat rude, threw the menu at me, appearing as if she didnt want to be bothered. Definitely a different atmosphere than most restaurants, and its blatantly obvious to me why. Too many other seafood restaurants in town that appreciate customers and their business, thank God for options.

i went last nite with a friend. the first thing that i noticed is the meals do not come with bread? oh thats extra. the second thing was the music. i felt like i was at the old "studio" bar in southside. not appropriate music at all. and the final straw was when i got my bill. 2 glasses of house chardonay wine was $18.00 !!!! $ 9.00per glass. my shrimp was over cooked and chewy. all 5 of them. over all..the place flat out sucked. i will not ever waste my time or money on that POS place.

The atmosphere is laid back and reminisce of beach life. The food was excellent and I highly recommend saving room for the fried cheesecake. Yeah, you read that right FRIED CHEESECAKE! Our server was not only friendly and attentive but she recommended some of the best seafood Ive had outside of the beach. I will not only make this a regular eatery on my list but will request our server Haley. Thanks for a great foodie experience!
