One of the worst coffee establishments I have ever been to in the Bay area or practically anywhere as a matter of fact. When I entered, there was nobody in line, yet the cashier was talking to her friend while the barista was on his phone. I waited 2 minutes before I spoke up and asked if her friend was in line. I placed my order for a drink I always order on a daily basis (for years). After a few minutes the drink was finished and handed to me. It already looked off but I decided to try it before I said anything. The drink was completely off and tasted horrible, and there wasnt even any coffee or espresso in it! I quickly brought the drink back to the barista and told him this is not what I ordered. The cashier rudely interrupted and reassured me that this is what I ordered and asked if I wanted something else in a condescending tone. The barista then also backed up the cashier by saying he heard me order the wrong drink as well, even though he was not paying attention what so ever. I finally convinced them to make a new drink but the barista then poured out a little of the wrong drink and put a shot of espresso in it..during the process both the cashier and barista were speaking in Spanish whilst looking at me and shaking their heads.. This was the worst case of costumer service I have encountered. The customer is always right and should be treated as so, and in this case I am 100% sure I ordered the right drink because I order it daily. I suggest you never go to this facility if you are expecting any type of respect or decent coffee.

This place initially seemed to have everything I was looking for in a coffee shop. It was nicely lit, classical music playing(conducive to studying), and wonderful coffee. However, my ideal study coffee shop image was quickly removed on my second visit. The hours posted are 6am-11pm everyday for open operating hours. A time frame where things should remain the same. If that were the case, this review wouldnt be getting one star. So... the person that was working that day, whom said he was the owner, at 9:45pm started slowly changing the tempo of the music from classical to upbeat cumbia. He then raised the volume to a ridiculously High level and started turning off the lights in sections were people were still sitting. At that point, they resorted to using their phones to be able to see the page they were still reading. Someone wanted to use the restroom, to which he said(the owner), "its already been cleaned," and kept on with his closing duties. Initially acting as if he didnt hear us. When I inquired about the hours, he said, "I get to decide when we close." At this point(10:15pm) the lights were completely off and the music was blasting at a Very high volume. There were at least a dozen people still in there sitting amongst themselves trying to study or in mid conversation. This man, and his inconsiderate actions led me to write this review.

My wife and I have been coming to Berkeley Espresso for over twenty years; every Saturday for the first ten – and less frequently since, due to travel out of town. That travel has taken us to capitals in Europe and South America, as well as to the Big Apple – all supposed bastions of great coffee. We have sampled cafes in all those cities and we always end up longing for the cappuccino at Berkeley Espresso. I cannot speak about their other coffees, but the Mexican brothers who have been barristas there for the whole twenty years (top that, Starbucks!), and recognize us with a smile even after long absences, make a cap that is strong but not bitter, and wet without becoming a latte: a bracing morning nectar. If out-of-town friends want to meet for coffee, I always set the rendezvous for Berkeley Espresso.

Nice casual coffee shop, wasnt sure what to expect going in while wandering around. Saw the completely manual espresso machine and was instantly excited. Its not the fanciest place but they served me one of the best well rounded lattes. A lot of places are super modern and focus on light roasted coffee, I liked that the espresso wasnt overly bright. If, like me, youre luckily lost in Berkeley and need a good non pretentious coffee this place shouldnt disappoint.

Nice staff, inexpensive lunch (if you get the salad/sandwich combo for $5-something), and they dont hassle you if you want to sit there and work on their free wifi forever, though sometimes you have to ask them to restart it (but theyre always nice about it). My go-to place for a late night working away at a local cafe! :) Minus 1 star because if you sit in the back by the restroom... well, just dont sit there if you can avoid it!

Im a fan of Berkeley Espresso. It provides you a calm place with drinks. The good things are its environment, Free WiFi and Coffees. A negative point is that it doesnt have any meal or really good sandwiches so I usually have to leave there for lunch or dinner. The caffeine menu is pretty good but the smoothies options are not sufficient. It has a good working hours and totally I enjoy working there.

Love this local coffee shop! Bartenders are friendly and know your order if you come fairy often. They play nice, non-distracting music (on the classical side), have lots of seating. Their coffee is good, better than most places (but not excellent). Prices are fair. Ideal place for studying and grabbing morning coffee.

This coffee shop gets soooo crowded. If it wasnt for that, it would def get 5 stars. Theres outlets everywhere so you can plug your laptop in. Free WIFI which is why its so popular. The other people who go there are pretty courteous too. One guy switched outlets so I could plug my laptop in.

Not a great coffee shop, especially for working. Barista let me come in, get settled, and just about start working, then asked that I buy something right away. I had just come in from eating, so wasnt ready to buy anything yet, so had to leave...doesnt make all that much sense.

This place has a culture of its own! A lot of locals having lively discussions about happenings in the area and around the world. Popular work spot for students and researchers from UC Berkeley too.

Nice open seating vibe, and pleasant atmosphere. Too much milk in the cappuccino for my taste, and it was a little bland in terms of the flavor of the coffee, but a nice place overall.

Great atmosphere, although it can be hard to find a table at night.
