Transplanted from Austin, TX and seeking good food in New York that doesnt cost a months rent with wine. We are staying in Washington Heights, looking for an apartment and slowly trying every restaurant in the neighborhood. Thus far, no place wed take friends to (our friends are not 20 somethings whose idea of great food is a step up from Olive Garden). Saggio last night was a pleasant place to sit and have a drink, but the food prep and presentation was uninspired--or at least the items we ordered. But the way simple things are handled tells you a lot about a place. My husbands avocado crostini was just a mound of avocado on a toast. No bits of anything for texture or flavor. Maybe not even salt. My penne with vegetables was an unappetizing mess. It was supposed to be penne with tomatoes and roasted veggies. It was a bowl of penne swimming in a bland tomato sauce with some steamed broccolli and green beans. My husbands pappardelle with veal ragu was quite tasty--but came out warm-not piping hot. We ate his, and I took mine home for further dissection and maybe repair. It will probably go into the garbage. And I didnt even get to the dessert. This place needs a consultation with a good chef and better training of whole staff.

Easily the best Italian restaurant in Washington/Hudson Heights. Very cozy, intimate atmosphere. The food is consistently incredible. The Tagliata Toscano is my particular favorite; the tender skirt teak is cooked to perfection, with sheets of Parmesan over a bed of arugula. Pasta dishes are also excellent. Wine selection could be better. Get the caprese as a starter - you wont regret it! One of the few negatives is the fact that its gotten so popular over the years, that it can become very crowed for dinners...its almost *too* cozy, and you feel like youre sharing your dinner with the parties nearby... but no more than many other "Manhattan-sized" restaurants clamoring for real estate. Because it gets crowded, and they dont take reservations, schedule your meal to be early. Or, put your name in and go for a walk...often the wine/liquor store nearby has wine tastings, which is a good way to use the time while you wait for your table. There also s a good Hudson River overlook just down the hill.

Do not order the steak or the fennel salad. Stick with the pasta and the burrata. Great wait staff. No music outside. Ive been here several times and usually its good, but this past time, my friends and I each ordered the steak, and all of us were highly disappointed. The steak was sliced before being cooked, and each slice had a different temperature and taste, ranging from completely raw to well done and from too acidic to unpalatable. As far as salads and appetizers, the burrata was great, but the fennel salad was way too salty and was 50% parsley. In the past, Ive ordered pasta and it was good. However if you have to be gluten free, know that the gluten free pasta isnt made by them -- its probably a similar brand to what you use at home. Overall, this latest experience left three people highly dissatisfied, two of which promised to never go here again.

Every time I go they screw up my order somehow for me and my girlfriend for the last month this has been the source of many headaches for me as it makes her unhappy when we get home and I have to deal with her Crankiness and Bitchiness as a result of these servers who dont seem to care about their jobs or seem to be happy to be there at all. I am consistently disappointed every time I go. If it wasnt for the fact that for some reason she likes this restaraunt (Even though she complains just as much if not more.) Id never go. Today she put in an order for Pancakes with Fruit On the side I go to pick up the order and open it up....Fruit on top......instructions are consistently not followed and I refuse to tip people that cant follow instructions if their job is to take orders and FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. -David L. Newish to the area I was pleased to find lovely little Italian restaurant in my neighborhood. The food is well portioned and consistently tasty with some unique flair on traditional favorites. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is intimate and warm. Hard to believe this gem is in Washington Heights On a recent visit my boyfriend and I commented to the owner how much we enjoyed dining here and he sent out a huge piece of tiramisu for us. Not only was it very generous but the most delicious tiramisu I can recall ( and Ive traveled all through Italy sampling tiramisu!) Would highly recommend.. If you live in the area and appreciate italian food and excellent atmosphere,Saggio will likely become one of your favorite places to dine! It certainly has mine.

WaHi and Inwood need more food options like Saggio! The place is always packed for a reason. Though folks say the space is small, the food is fantastic. Actually, I appreciate the small space, its intimate. Ive had most of the main dishes and have never been let down. The specials are also nothing to miss. Youll want to come back again and again to try everything on the menu. My suggestion is have everyone in your party order something different and share because youre going to want to have a taste of it all. To top off your well prepared, perfectly cooked dish, order the tiramisu. Overall, Saggio is excellent: the prices are perfect, the food is amazing, the ambiance is cozy and comfortable. Get to 181st and see for yourself!

The food is very delicious and filling. When attended to the service is professional and warm/welcoming. However, I must say that tonight was immensely uncomfortable and very disappointing. The two people who were seated next to us received their meals before us (they were seated at least 15 minutes after we were and ordered the same exact dish that I had). It was very odd, limited attention. Also, fellow customers -including the ones sitting next to us - were being unpleasant to be around (inappropriate remarks, unusual direct eye contact) with me and also with the person I was with. I hope that next time I decide to go (I was planning to bring along some friends) we will find the place to be friendlier and more attentive.

Food is good for this neighborhood, but would be just okay elsewhere in the city. The seating rules are more than annoying. No reservations for groups under 5. No seating until every single person in your group has arrived. We were a party of 4, but only 2 had arrived. I explained the situation and asked to be seated at a two top with a free adjacent two top. There were no other people waiting and there was an open 4 top as well. Also a lone 2 top in a corner near the bathroom. The two of us could not be seated anywhere except at the bathroom table. At that point it was clearly malicious. Hostess has major rude attitude, which is a turn off for a mediocre neighborhood family style restaurant.

By far the best restaurant in the area and the atmosphere is welcoming and lovely. Precisely because it is the best food in the area, it is quite crowded on weekend evenings, but well worth the wait. There are a wide variety of daily specials, but some favorites from the large, regular menu are the house salad, kale caesar salad, and truly, all their salads, outstanding fresh burrata, black linguine with calamari in a spicy fresh tomato sauce, grilled salmon, the poached pear desert, etc. etc. The portions tend to be very generous and the staff is warm, personable and very helpful.
