The Nickell Tour
Before I leave any review I feel compelled to share that a woman in a wheelchair was unable to gain access to the restroom because the path was blocked by several chairs. This was really disheartening to see and was disruptive to guests along the path who were all very polite to the woman (she was equally polite and apologetic) who was put into an awkward and uncomfortable position. The restaurant has failed the handicap community in this regard. Im unable to say if this is a consistent problem with them since this is my only visit. The service was just okay but the food was amazing. We started with the gorgonzola stuffed dates. They were good but since they were not stuffed with enough gorgonzola the dates won that palate battle. My wife ordered the Farmers Lunch, which was tasty and I highly recommend ordering it with the amazing tomato soup. The sourdough while deliciously chewy seriously lacked any sort of sour flavor and was used as a vessel for the soup. I ordered the BLTA (the A is Avocado) and it was a show stopper. They did not skimp on the bacon which was cooked perfectly. The sandwich tasted and looked like it was built with care. The tomatoes were a bit mealy but the multigrain bread more than made up for it. The crowd was a little "extra" for my liking but thankfully there were some kind souls peppered in to offset that. The taste and quality of the food also made up for any unfortunately overhead conversations that reeked of privilege. If youre a wine lover you should definitely know that Katelyn Peil of Purple Cafe was just named Sommelier of the Year by Seattle Magazine. While Im not a fan of wine I know enough to know this is a pretty big deal and Im not surprised by this news with the offerings available. The parking situation can be disastrous if you go during a busy time. If youre a foodie by any stretch you absolutely have to eat here, plain and simple.

This is the "special local place" for my wife and I, and we come here once every month or two. Each time, the service is great, and the food has been consistently excellent. One of my favorites is the filet mignon, which is a simple cut always done as I like it -- and the one time that it wasnt, they took it back immediately with no questions asked. Also, Ive had the risotto on a number of occasions, and thats very good as well: unique flavors, and not overpoweringly rich. One more thing about the filet mignon: It beats Daniels Broiler steak hands down, imho, because its a better quality of meat and it doesnt have the thick and salty stuff on it like at Daniels. My wife likes the fish and chicken dishes. For example, she recently had a lime cilantro salmon, and it was excellent (she said so, and I tasted it, too!). Salads: I love their chop (chopped?) salad, but watch out -- its big and filling! Regarding the wine, Im not high-end and only have a glass or two with dinner, so I try to get what I want by discussing what I like and asking for tastes of one or two. Theyre always very accommodating with this, and I therefore end up with wines that are quite good. Their flights are fun, too. Parking is kind of unpleasant, reservations on popular nights can be hard to get, and the place can get noisy, but in all, its our favorite medium- to high-end place in the area by far.

My family has been long time guests at purple cafe and we really enjoyed both the Kirkland and Bellevue locations in overall service, food, and time management. I was horrified to see that the service at the woodinville location was not even half to the other two locations. The food in itself was the same but the service did not match up. I went there with my boyfriend and many of the other guests run on the older side as there are plenty of wineries around. We are on the younger side and were treated as if we were ten and idiots. Nobody took us seriously when we asked for boxes and were overly bothered every five minutes about how our meal was going. Once we asked for a check we were somewhat pressured to stay for desert. Despite being younger I typically tip quite well but in this experience they got a very low amount of tip for their very low quality service.

The Woodinville Purple specifically has some issues that their other locations dont seem to suffer from. They barricade the entrance from the walkway so you have to snake your way around the parking lot to get into the place. Their outdoor seating is a joke. Once inside in their non existent "lobby" other patrons and staff literally brush up against you as they walk past. They have crammed in so many tables you can barely move in this place. Their menu is stale and their main courses are fairly unimpressive. Their wait staff is actually pretty good and the food has always been well prepared and often properly cooked. Its a shame they dont offer mixed drinks but they are a wine bar. Again, the other purple locations dont seem to have the same issues, just the woodinville location.

For the restaurant everyone holds in such high regard, I have been fairly disappointed. The service has always been slow and spotty, sometimes it takes 25 minutes to get a glass of wine...in a wine bar. Ive had hit and miss with food, sometimes good, sometimes bland (How can truffle risotto be bland??). Dont go during Seattle Restaurant week, youll have terrible service, and heaven forbid you order off that menu, youre order will be slow, luke warm, and disappointing. The wine selection is good, highly overpriced, though. I can walk down the street and buy a bottle of good Chateau Ste Michelle wine for $25 but youre going to charge $18 a glass?? FYI, if you do go, bring a bottle of Washington wine that is not currently on their menu and the corkage fee is waived!

Ive been to the Woodinville Purple and the food and service were terrible, I was actually shocked. So I avoid that restaurant. I thought maybe the Bellevue Purple would be different, but no. Service was pretty good actually but the food was horrible. Purple Bellevue served me the worst fish and chips Ive ever eaten. The fish was rubbery, I actually picked up a piece and it wobbled back and forth, totally soggy. The fish inside was severely overcooked and took a lot of chewing to get down. On top of everything the fries were as soggy as pasta, just absolutely no crunch in anything. I think Ive learned my lesson; Purple is ok if you stick to drinks but the food is always an issue. Today Im going to Ivars to clear my palette and get some better fish and chips.

Purple in Woodinville has become a go to for fun or special occasions. They food, wine and service are always great. Their patio is dog friendly too! They went above and beyond our last visit. I happen to follow them on Instagram and saw they were having a special on regional wines. After commenting that wed be trying one of those tonight for my husbands birthday, they replied that theyd be a dessert from them for him. But it didnt end there! They then saw wed recently had a baby and so also made sure I was taken care of and had a dessert in them too. It was extra lovely for what was a stressful time with a newborn (and family around) our night to ourself was made even more wonderful.
