Last time I was there they were just plain rude. I asked how fresh the carrot cake was. The waitress smiled and didnt say anything. I understood what that meant, and asked her to find out what is was the freshest cake they had She came back with another waiter who started yelling at me: "What you mean how fresh the cake is, is all fresh. [sic]." I told him I have been there before, ordered the cake it was stale. He said in a loud voice so everyone around could here "All cakes is fresh!" So I told Ill have the carrot cake then. He said "Youll love it. It will be the best cake youve ever had." When the waitress brought the cake, sure enough it was stale. It tasted like it was sitting in the refrigerator for a week. I dont think Ill be going back there for a while. I am not fussy and can deal with restaurant owners yelling at me, but only if they have the best food in the world (think Soup Nazi from Seinfeld). But if their food sucks and they yell at you, then I just feel sorry for them. Every time I drive by there, their place looks emptier and emptier. If they cant treat their customers right, they deserve to go out of business.

I found this place on the internet and said let me give it a try. While I only ate breakfast here I have to admit it was delicious. I had the pancakes (they had such a sweet taste it did not need syrup), bacon (nice and crispy), scrambled eggs (a little runny, if you dont like them like that let the waiter know well done) and home fries which were excellent. Coming from the northeast, I have to admit they have the best pancakes I ever ate from a diner and I come from a state that has diners everywhere. Unfortunately, they do not get the 5 stars because our waiter, took forever to serve our food and forgot to bring some of the stuff we asked and reminded him twice after that. Then when we got the bill numerous of things were added that we never ordered. It happen all three times that we ate breakfast here. I dont think it was intentional just the old timer we had as a waiter didbnot know what he was doing or he just forgot and added stuff from other peoples order....lol, so take the time to review your bill.

Decor was okay - booth seats not so cushy or comfy. Waiter was not able to adequately recommend specific dishes, only listed everything on the menu as I was thumbing through the pages. Meat was cooked nicely, but the "double" veggies was enough for a small child. Seemed to ignore the empty cup at the edge of the table until the third time he came to ask if everything was okay -- had to remind our waiter that I wanted more hot tea but he only brought hot water so I could re-steep my already-overused teabag. Unfortunately, I had gone there for DESERT - - carrot cake. The showcase showed a luscious round cake, so I was looking forward to a nice slice of it at the end of my meal. I received, instead, a large plate with literally a thin rectagular SLIVER of cake... $5 for 4 bites of cake? I made such a comment to the waiter, who walked away without care that the cake I received was much too small to be called a "portion". I will not return to the Amphora at the Herndon location.

The only reason I even give it 2 stars is the fact that it has a humongous menu and everyone should be able to find something they can eat. Having said that... the food is just not that good. I have some good friends from college in the area that like to go there everytime we have a get-together of former college classmates, so I have been there 10 or more times. Its always the same. The service is slow, most of the time the server has an attitude, you practically have to beg to get your drinks refilled... Everytime Ive gone Ive gotten something different and the only thing that Ive had that I would *really* recommend to someone is the Maple Avenue Ultimate Grilled Cheese. Everything else has been mediocre, at best. The atmosphere is nice and upscale, but it doesnt match the service or the food (or the fact that its supposed to be a diner). I dont recommend it at all, and the next time I go up to NoVA to meet my college buddies, I am going to beg to go someplace different.

Its a bit of a shame, the food is delicious, yet the service is awful. If youre expecting to get in, order, eat, pay, and leave in any kind of time constraint, this is not the place you want to go to. You will be sat, wait 5-10 minutes for a menu, 15 more for your drink order, another 15-20 just to get your food order, food will come out at a moderate temperature (never freshly hot...you can tell it sat for a while), and then after not getting your drink refilled, you finish eating...and wait 20 minutes for the check - all on a slow day when you might be one of 3 small tables the server has. The food is great, I definitely recommend the Brioche French Toast, but dont expect decent service. Another fun visit we were trying to get in, eat, and go in what we considered a generous amount of time. We were sat, ordered our drinks and food at the same time, food came out about 25 minutes later, still hadnt seen the server, still had no napkin/silverware, or even our drinks.

Im going to start this review by saying the outside of the diner looks great. Having been to the Amphora in Vienna numerous times, we kind of knew what we were getting... thats what we thought anyway. The inside is much nicer than Vienna and has a larger capacity for seating. Thats really where the positive ends. I had hoped to order the Country Fried Steak and Eggs with an Arnold Palmer and a Spanakopita appetizer. Unfortunately, I didnt get that far. I cant even review their water, and heres why: We were seated at 10:55 pm. There was a group seated ahead of us and a group seated after us. The group that was seated after us were immediately greeted and asked for beverages etc. 11:05pm. Still no greeting for our table. 11:10pm. Another group walked in and was seated two tables behind us. They were greeted immediately. 11:17pm. We had enough and walked out. No greeting, no beverages, no water, just silence. Wouldnt recommend unless you want to fill up on frustration.

I love the food here. But beware, i had problems with the check. Server took it back twice, and then when we went to pay at the cashier, days later I checked my credit statements, and someone charged the food amount which was 28.38 and also charged $14.70 extra. I gave $4 tip, so I was very disturbed when the manager Petros couldnt explain or give me a good explanation as to why my account had that unauthorized charge. It took me a full week to work this out with the manager. Going back and forth with phone calls, and even going in to the restaurant. Annoying because I live in Sterling, not Herndon. After all that trouble, it finally disappeared off my statement, but I wasnt compensated for my troubles or time at all. Its a shame because I had my wedding cake from the bakery in Herndon, but I will not be referring them anymore. IF i ever go back, I will pay with cash, as I do not like sneaky employees.
