At first glance The Deadrise is an awesome little establishment that sits atop an old marina in the historic Fort Monroe. With indoor and outdoor seatinf, it presents as a very big restaurant with a small homely feel. Seating is limited indoors, 13 4top tables with 3 2 person stool tables and some bar seating. The interior is very well kept, tables are cleaned off nearly instantaneously, and the bathroom is kept in decent condition. As you sit, you begin to experience a very distinct feeling of being on a seafood vessel, with a plethora of wooden and pallet art work through out the establishment. Lighting is very appropriate, and a view of the James River & Chesapeake Bay complete a very encompassing submersion into this nautical feeling. The server staff was warm and inviting, however very inattentive and nearly clueless of time. Though our server was seated with 4 tables near the same time, we were the last to be seen to order, drinks took 10 min to come to the table, and refills were not plenty. A drink order that was 1) not brought to the table that warranted a reminder to bring it and 2) was the wrong drink after the reminder was removed from the bill voluntarily by the server and management. The food was AMAZING, if not untimely. Appropriate temps, tasted incredible, prepared fresh, and used only the highest care in presentation. Providing a limited menu with many delicious choices, you know that the cook staff is focused on their food and preparation. Fresh seafood is delivered daily, and you can taste it! Unfortunately the cons of the waitstaff do warrant a 3/5 star rating, simply because of the amount of mistakes and poor time managment. Such issues can only be corrected with experience and the ability to multitask. The Deadrise is a very welcoming and tasty establishment that will grow QUICKLY and soon grow outside of its tiny confines. I look forward to see it blossom into a much larger vision. Caveat: Food portions to price is incredible, also drink selection is unlimited and as well appropriately priced.

There are enough photographs of the excellent cuisine now for you to get a good idea of the art with which it is prepared and the flair with which it is plated, so I have taken no pictures of the food. But I dined there for lunch yesterday, very happy to find that they are open for lunch, and I was served fresh fried oysters which were as delicious and as perfectly prepared as you might find them at the huge Great Machipongo Clam Shack on the Eastern Shore, far, far away from Hampton. AND the service was most courteous and attentive, in a less hectic environment. Two things might edge the rating down from the foods WELL-EARNED five stars, but to me they are insignificant to the rating: first, the extensive beer list is overstuffed with the fab pop designer beer labels of today and tomorrow, but very thin on imported European beers (e.g., no Pilsener Urquell, Lowenbrau, Grolsch--they DO have Guiness Stout, which I perhaps too gratefully ordered)--so I guess it is a "Millennial Beer List" after all; second, the desserts are few and are not prepared on-premises. I had the pecan pie, which was quite respectable except for having a piecrust thick enough to make four pies with if it were rolled out properly. As a lunch I had the Mediterranean Salad topped with the fried oysters, and I found it an excellent combination, undoubtedly more healthy than the entire order of oysters I would have ordered had I known beforehand how good those would be. You may dine al fresco at The Deadrise, and if you want to enjoy the view of Hampton Roads you may prefer to, as the louvered and probably very functional shutters are some impediment to the view from the interior. But the intimate atmosphere of the interior of The Deadrise makes the choice a real tossup--THE FOOD IS THE STAR AT THE DEADRISE!

The food is pretty good but the price is high and the portion size was small. Do not go here if you have food allergies or if you like to do substitutions or if you want to inquire about ingredients. The waiter would not ask what kind of oil the fries where cooked in. He did not bring salt to the table when I asked for it. My son asked for a burger plain with nothing on it and it was covered in pepper. I had to argue with the waiter to bring a burger with no pepper. Much of the food is pre seasoned and can not be had without pepper. The vegetable sides were table spoon size. The water glass was not filled without asking. They were not very busy and I left hungry. The scallops were good but not very many and not very big.

We love the location and food. We got calamari as a starter which was super fresh. As a main dish we got seafood burito. It was super delicious and big. We shared the food and it was enough two of us. The outside view was Amazing. I gave 4 stars for two reason. 1: we ordered non alcholic coctail basically mix juice we paid $9 for a glass. It was the most expensive juice I ever drank. The other thing was our waitress. She forgot to bring our service. Two bring water took her at least 15 mins. We asked for lighter to light birthday cake candles and she said I dont have it. We were suprise about her attidue. Then she said she can ask someone else. Her attitudue was very strange. Anyhows good food good location

On a rather dreary overcast and rainy Friday, we found this gem on the waterfront. Its a small restaurant (approximately 48 seats) located on the second floor of a nondescript building, with wonderful views of the water. But whats the use of a view if the experience is lacking? Well not here - this was one of the best seafood lunches that we have ever experienced. The rockfish was fresh, plentiful and nicely seasoned, the service prompt and friendly, and the prices very reasonable. Oh, and the wine selection is admirable and the coffee smooth and hot. We knew we struck gold when we entered and observed all of the tables filled with "locals."

One of the very best shrimp po boys Ive had, if not the best, and Im from New Orleans. The shrimp was lightly battered which was a nice touch. The remoulade had the perfect amount of kick. The ciabatta it comes on! Also a nice touch. If I lived here Id come here weekly. Inside is super cool too, its classy yet casual. The staff were nice and professional.. I just cant say enough good things about this place. Will recommend to my VA friends. THANK YOU! Oh and the beans and rice as a side, perfection. More restaurants need better options like this instead of boring ass French fries. EAT HERE!! Itll be the best decision youll make all day.

The Deadrise is one of our favorite restaurants in the Tidewater area. Have been there many times. The service and food are always top notch. It is fairly small, so it can get very busy on weekend evenings. We usually go during the week and relatively early so there is almost never a wait. Love their "basket" options on the menu. They always have a number of specials that are well worth checking out too. Have never been disappointed. Also have a wide assortment of adult beverages available. If you go there on a nice evening, theres outdoor waterfront seating that will give you a glorious view of the sunset!
