Be sure to eat breakfast and dinner here! While staying at Smugglers Notch in July 11 with my wife and two daughters I searched web to find a nice place for dinner – something interesting, not same old. I came across this menu with New American cuisine and a touch of "comfort food". When we showed up, looked like a possible mistake or perhaps the website was out-dated - but we went in and sat for dinner. What a great surprise! I would never have expected this in a very rural (at least to me) setting. If you like the type of food at a truck stop or "standard" roadside diner - keep driving. If your taste is a little more refined - stop the car! Food is very creative and off the charts good! A mushroom-filled ravioli; fried chicken that should be patented and franchised; pork chops that were far from dry or boring; lamb burger with tzatziki and feta; very special “specials”; and an open-faced turkey sandwich transcended pre-conceived expectations of sliced processed turkey with canned gravy - how about fresh roasted turkey with a delicate gravy on fresh baked bread? Yes! Dont miss the crab-stuffed mushroom in marsala appetizer and spinach salad with goat cheese and pine nuts served warmed- WOW! Changes or substitutions to customize your meal- no problem! Breakfast is also wonderful! Forget same old ham, eggs, and home fries. Try Yukon gold potatoes that are seasoned and delicate with a goat cheese, mushroom, and fresh roasted tomato omelet. Also many choices of creative eggs benedict - try the spinach/cheese or crab meat. My wife and daughters loved the pancakes, and of course this is Vermont, so they are accompanied by fresh maple syrup. Somehow, even the butter on my toast was better than expected. There were so many items on the menu that we wanted to try - so during our one-week vacation, we ate four dinners and three breakfasts at the Family Table! The service was very friendly and made us feel welcome. Although my youngest was “starving” because the food took a little while, good food made fresh takes time – have a drink, butter some fresh bread with seasoned, smooth butter – and savor the anticipation. If this were my own familys table at home I would never leave the house! We may come back to Smugglers Notch for a vacation- because of this place!

The hostess and the server had a poor attitude. As someone who has been waitressing for five years, I found the server to be rude and the staff deceiving. I asked if they did anything for birthdays and I was charged for an $8 cake without any clarification as to what the price would be, nor whether it would be a "birthday freebie" (like many restaurants offer). The waitress, while seemingly straightforward, did not seem to enjoy our company and felt impatient with us. When my friend asked to substitute a side of normal French fries instead of the pasta salad, the waitress wrote down the wrong thing and then later, once receiving the food and upon us asking again for the correct side substitute, she took out her book and read off what she (incorrectly) wrote down as to "prove a point" that she was "supposedly correct" and we were incorrect. Id also like to point out that, being were visitors to Vermont, my friend and I couldnt help to wonder if our rude treatment was racially motivated, as we kept getting strange stares from women around the restaurant and the server seemed the most impatient when it came to talking to the only two black people at my table. The food was overpriced and I didnt appreciate the lack of communication between the staff members, as I originally told the host about the birthday and then had to get up again to tell the server since I thought the host would have communicated this to the server. After my years of restaurant service, this tells me the staff doesnt communicate well with one another. The food was so-so, except for the burger and the overpriced cake which was delicious. The waitress was superficial with us and it felt like it was an inconvenience for her to split up our check. At the end, after I had already told her the 2 of us who were on one check, she came up to us and still proceeded to ask if the 4 of us were on one check and then had to rewrite who had what food in order to split our check up. While she couldnt remember the food, she made sure to mention the birthday cake dessert once she had our orders written down for the second time. I will not be visiting this place again.

All I can say is thank God we took the wrong exit on our way to Smugglers Notch!! Had we not, we would have likely missed out on this amazing place to eat. We have been there for dinner both nights and will likely go there again today. The dinners we had were the Veal, Mac and cheese, Fettuccine Alfredo, a burger, along with antipasto and calamari appetizers. Everything was exceptional tasting! Just the aroma coming off of the meals as they were served was incredible. All of the ingredients they use are local and fresh, and the owner/chef (who came out to greet us) was just the most honest hard-working guy who obviously takes great pride in his craft. Everyone who comes to this part of the state should give this place a try, you certainly will not regret it!!

I am a regular at the Family Table and I have NEVER had a bad meal here. The quality is consistent time and time again. The food is freshly prepared, creative and absolutely delicious. Chef John is professionally trained and very talented and we are so lucky to have him here in our neck of the woods. Lets not forget the staff, either! Servers are professional and courteous, qualities that, unfortunately, I dont find everywhere in Vermont. I dont think anything is too pricey at all given the quality of the ingredients and the preparation. If you are local, and havent been in, what are you waiting for? If youre on vacation here, you have to stop in for big city quality food in a country mountain atmosphere. Its the best. Love you John and Tammie! PJ

Ill begin with the only good part; the food - once it finally arrived - was very good! That is where the positives end. I imagine the following experience could be attributed to us arriving at 8:05 pm when they close at 9pm, but otherwise there is no excuse for this poor experience. Dont get me wrong, the waitresses were very friendly, but it took 10 minutes before our waitress even introduced herself, she never asked for our drink order, then didnt come back to take our food order for 15 minutes!! In addition, they didnt have a main dish, admitted it would take 30 minutes to make the fried chicken, but STILL took 20 minutes to bring out the food. We didnt get our food until 9:05 pm...but it did taste good. Nevertheless, I will never go back!

We came to smugglers notch for our summer 2013 family vacation. While we had a great time at smugglers the food was just mediocre until we discovered Family Table on our last day. Simply put this place is fantastic! If you are a foodie, cosmopolitan, or just have high standards this place is for you. In fact we loved it so much we had it for lunch and dinner the same day. Btw the chop was so good I had it at both meals! And who would have thought scallops in the middle of the mountains could taste like your on Marthas Vinyard. John the chef is professionally trained and it shows. Thanks for the amazing eats. Jason
