Ive counted 11 Mexican restaurants in Universal City, and thats not even including the chains like Las Palapas and Chipotle. There is no short supply of this type of food in this city, which led me to believe that Taco Guadalajara - located in a small, ugly strip mall not far from my house and which I must have past at least 100 times to and from my way to work - was not going to be anything special. Ive had enough Mexican and Tex-Mex food to know that the failings of many restaurants is that the food is usually pretty similar-tasting and similarly lacking in spice and seasoning. Alas, such was not the case when I visited Taco Guadalajara, a restaurant specializing in Jalisco-style Mexican food. The restaurant is as small and modest as you would expect from looking at the exterior. The hours are hard to ascertain, too - theres nothing posted on the windows nor the menu aside from the vague assertion that theyre open "7 days a week". Judging from my passing by the restaurant so many times, it seems that its mostly a breakfast and lunch type of place. After checking out the menu for a bit, I was attracted to the burrito Guadalajara, which was claimed to be the specialty. A sign advertised the tacos al pastor, which I ordered, along with the burrito, also with the al pastor meat. The tacos were true to form, with five small corn tortillas supporting some flavorful and spiced meat with cilantro and onion, along with a lime and avocado wedge for garnish. The ingredients were simple, but I really enjoyed the al pastor meat, which I was lucky enough to also include with my burrito. It was stuffed with the meat and some tomato and lettuce and covered in a tomato cream sauce. Both dishes were simple, but because of how well they were made, in addition to the flavorful al pastor, I came away from the meal quite pleased. The rice and beans were fresh and had a flavor comparable to other Mexican restaurants Ive visited. This isnt a restaurant thats looking to cater to American palettes - the location ensures that those who are looking for something familiar have plenty of options from which to choose - but for those who are willing to take a chance on the more obscure restaurants, Taco Guadalajara will be sure to please.

First the good news: The service is very good, friendly and fast. The prices are low. The breakfast tacos are not bad (but not great). And the bad news: Its just another Tex-Mex place and not a very good one. I was not raised in Texas and therefore do not understand Tex-Mex food. It seems almost like Mexican food (or what people from New Mexico, Arizona, California, Sonora, and Baja call Mexican food), but with all the good stuff (chilis, enchilada sauce, flavorful and spicy salsa) replaced by tasteless and fatty substitutes. The "Cheese Enchiladas" are covered in beef gravy. I dont know how that qualifies as "cheese" (since its covered in beef!) or "enchiladas" (since it is not enchilada sauce). The rice was bland bordering on revolting. The beans were decent, but nothing special. The al pastor torta was fatty, with a tangy but almost tasteless sauce (not spicy); an old, mealy tomato; and a weird sauce the consistency of cream cheese, but again flavorless (maybe cheap mayo?); all served in a what seemed to be a store-bought hot dog bun. If you are expecting Mexican food, head west, young man or woman. If you like Tex-Mex, you can do better than here, Im sure.

Prices were reasonable for food quantity but not so much considering quality. The place felt abandoned since the wall colors were pale and place felt kinda dirty. The chips tasted old and way too greesy. My friend fot a torta that had more lettuce than actual meat. And lastly the staff were not very welcoming ans took a while altho there was only 1 other person there. The only good things i would have say were the salsas they had were good and the tortillas were good.-During Breakfast

I went there for the first time yesterday, I order the Migas breakfast plate. Youre probably wondering was it good? The answer is Yes! I always love going to these hole in the wall places, they are always hidden Gems. I dont order online because they partner with GrubHub, who take about 15% of commission on sales. I like to help these small establishments out Highly recommend this place, and I cant wait until they open today so I can try out their other plates.

I go here probably twice a week maybe more some days when Im in a rush and need breakfast. Im a vegan and the only thing I can get is the papas rancheros. They are absolutely phenomenal, though they never taste the same they are different in a good way. I love to support local mom and pop stores and thats what this is. Would definitely recommend if youre in a rush and need something quick and delicious.

Order breakfast tacos multiple times and by far the worst breaskfast tacos Ive had. They have a spoon full of eggs in each taco and the lady that serves you and checks you out is rude, never smiles. Went back because they messed up my order and I talked to the chef and he told me never to come back, horrible service. Save your time and money.

This restaurant is absolutely excellent! The owner took over a couple of years ago and is always there making sure the customers are well taken care of. The food is delicious and always cooked right! Of course there are lots of Mexican restaurants on Pat Booker, but the feeling of being at home is what sets this place apart from the rest!
