Los Barrios has been around a few decades because its a fairly good / slightly above-average Tex-Mex restaurant. However, the menu not only has plenty of Tex-Mex entrees but some Continental Cuisine as well. The chips are okay (sometimes too oily, sometimes too hard/thick). The salsa is really good with a deep, quasai-smokey flavor thats probably from grilling/charring the tomatoes before made into salsa. The flavor is complex but its not spicy at all. The tortillas are fine - nothing to write home about. The pinto beans are flavorful, and better than most Ive tried. The rice is fairly good, but I wish they add more spices and other small veggies and herbs to make it more flavorful. One of my favorite things here are the puffy tacos, which are done extremely well. I like the beef with lettuce and queso blanco the most, and I always order one when I come here for an appetizer. The pollo en salsa dish is grilled chicken with a choice of sauce (I choose chipotle cream) with queso chihuahua. Its pretty good, but the chipotle sauce is not anywhere close to Ajuuas. Ajuuas is far more creamy, smooth, and subtle. Another Los Barrios dish I really enjoy is the quesadillas, which more like a puffy quesadillas filled with tons of queso blanco and pablano peppers. Its delicious (if you like cheese). Ive also had the churrasco beef and short ribs from the Continental Cuisine section of the menu and both were delicious. In short, Los Barrios serves fairly good food and a wide variety of options. Its not the best place Ive tried by any means, but its sure not one of the worst. Los Barrios remains in my current top 5 Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants: 1) Taqueria Datapoint, 2) Ajuua, 3) Guallijos, 4) Cascabel Mexican Patio, and 5) Taqueria El Chilaquil

My boyfriend and I went there with a party of about 15 people after a graduation. Originally we heard it was good, but it turned out to be the most disappointing experience Ive had, counting a bad run in with Thai food. They ran out of spicy sauce, the meat was tasteless, the green enchiladas didnt even come with cheese on them and I had to ask for sour cream for everyone even though the plate is supposed to come with it and at least 8 people out of that party got food poisoning for the entire next week. Because of that food, I threw up about 9x in a three hour period (along with other things we wont mention), couldnt eat for two days, and never hurt so bad in my life. Obviously there was something wrong. None of us will ever go here again and I dont recommend it. (this happened 6 weeks ago)

Kind of an upscale local Mexican food joint that can handle large groups of people. Patio options as well as inside options abound. Food was pretty good, service was also good (for 24 of us) but a little awkward. Our server just seemed demanding (in a hurry is understanding, but he was really demanding). When all was said and done, all 24 of us were served drinks, food, etc. with ZERO mistakes. I realize this is tough to do so I give them props for that. Food was good but not something I would go out of my way for or tell an out of towner, "dude, we have GOT to go to this place!"

Place looked great and clean called ahead to make a reservation for 5 and we were seated in less than 5 mins which was great...chips and salsa were great...I got the mango margarita which was good...Birria was nice and tender, but my wifes carne guisada was LOADED with SODIUM not good..rice seem to be a little OLD..refried beans were great my daughter enjoyed her bean and cheese taco...I thought margaritas were a little over priced $8.50 plus tax and glass was not the biggest...my in laws enjoyed their carne asada and rib plate...our total for us was $108 plus tip...

first off let me say Im from Houston not San Antonio and for my family and I to eat here it will never happend again. First off the food is nasty like the rice was dry and had no flavor, the food was awful in general . Plus the price was high for just my son it was close to 7-8 dollars and the fries were dry and it was just two chicken strips. If I wanted to spend that much on a childs plate I could of paid some where else . the waitress wouldnt come to check on our drinks we would have to tell other people . I will never come here again.

Used Google Reviews to find a great Tex-Mex restaurant and landed us here! From previous reviews, we were amped up - but were thinking tonight was an off-night. I had an enchilada meal (3 chicken) and the meat was pink. My husband had the brisket gorditas and was extremely pleased - the meat was tender and the taste was delicious. I should have asked my server about my enchiladas, but he looked a little stressed-out and frenzied. Settling on three stars because of the one bite I had of my husbands meal - which was - phenomenal.

Saw the episode of "Puffy Tacos" on Throwdown! With Bobby Flay so I had to make the drive from Houston to San Antonio. Food was great. The puffy tacos were not as puffy as I saw on TV but they tasted great. The rice and beans were good as well. I grew up as a picky eater and never liked the peas in the rice. The salsa had great flavor, kind of sweet at the beginning then the spice at the end. Next time I return to San Antonio I will eat here again. But probably at the new location on Redland.

I had a combination plate...I think it was like the number 14. Anyway it came with 2 crunchy tacos on a side plate. Those 2 tacos were quite possibly the best tacos I have ever eaten. Perfect flavor, quantity of meat and lettuce and cheese, perfect light crunchy shell. Not greasy and the shell didnt break all apart after a few bites. My mom had the puffy tacos and I tried a couple bites but my tacos were heavenly. I will always remember that experience and our waitress was awesome too

The food was amazing. The service was wonderful thank you Fabian. However, the Manager tried to kick us out during our baby shower because they had another reservation. Ive managed restaurants for years and at no point would I ever consider removing a set of guests because I cant manage my place of business correct. Punishing guests for your failure as a manager is completely unacceptable. I will not return and would highly suggest you steer clear if you are dining with a reservation.

Tuesday, 5/5/2015, arrived at 7:30pm left at 9:00. Took forever to get greeted, waited on, and the meal. Some of the tortillas had black oil spots on them. Fajitas were not steaming hot. Enchiladas tortillas were doughy (under cooked). In defense of our waiter, it seemed that all of the waiters were having problems. Manager was not involved at any point. Waitress did give us an order of sopaipilla. I dont know the problem, but on previous visits, service and food was wonderful.

Im not someone who, prior to living in San Antonio, would get that late-night craving for burritos. Mexican cuisine is not particularly one of my favorites. That being said, I DO crave the food from Los Barrios in a Pavlovian manner where the mere mention of the name "Los Barrios" sends me into a catatonic, drooling state. I love their guac, I love their fish tacos and I REALLY love their Nachos Butler. They also have chimi churri on the table that is to die for.
