The atmosphere is wonderful. Ideal for a small family like ours. Our almost 3 year old enjoyed playing in the playground, but was mostly entertained the entire time by all of the rocks. Bring them in clothes you are okay with getting dusty and dirty. She complained about the rocks in her shoes a lot, so maybe some tennis shoes and not flats. Woops. Now on to the food. My husband ordered The Foundry, which was their fried chicken biscuit with mashed potatoes, bacon, mustard and American cheese. It was large but he was pretty disappointed that something that cost $11 did not come with a small side. He was still satisfied, however. He would rate it a "4.7" out of 5 because "nothing was perfect". My daughter and I ordered the kids meal. Two chicken strips with a side of Mac and cheese for her, and a side salad with carrot vinaigrette for myself. There was the option for fries as well. Chicken strip was decent sized and juicy. No dipping sauce came with it, so I just used the Cholula sauce on the table for some flavor since it was lacking. The side salad was pretty small but I did order a kids meal, I suppose that is to be expected. Just some mixed greens with three thin slices of radishes. The carrot vinaigrette was basically blended carrots and vinegar, which I enjoyed. My daughters Mac and cheese however, no one enjoyed. Now Cadence can put down some Mac and cheese, for example at sweet tomatoes she eats two of the soup bowls full, but here at Chicken Scratch, she did just scratch at the surface of it, leaving pretty much all of it behind for mom and dad to eat. We left most of it, and that speaks a lot for us because I hate wasting food. The only way I can describe it is as if my daughter tried to cook the pasta, left it out overnight and it hardened and lost its texture, then she tried to mix the powdered cheese and water but didnt quite get it right so there were lumps left over when she poured it over top of the pasta. Literally...the "cheese" was clumped up and barely covered the pasta. The Mexican street cart style popsicles that came with the kids meal was actually the best thing I had there. I had the pecan and my daughter chose the mango. Those were milk based and creamy goodness.

The chicken tenders and fries are good but its over priced and the customer service here is terrible. I had one bad experience with a female Hispanic cashier (I didnt get her name) who was too busy talking to her boyfriend to acknowledge us for a good 5 minutes. No eye contact nor a simple hello. Once she felt she was finally ready to take our order she just stood at the cash register and stared at us with an attitude like we were inconveniencing her even though shes at work getting paid to take orders. I decided to give this place benefit of the doubt considering I love the food but I had yet again ANOTHER bad experience. It was black female cashier (didnt get her name either so I must describe). I stood infront of her at the register for a good awkward 30 seconds patiently. She didnt look up at me or acknowledge me. Once she decided she would take my order she said without looking up "order when youre ready"... as if I hadnt been standing there waiting for her to take my order. She was so monotone, was rushing me with an attitude. McDonalds has exceptional customer service compared to this place. What baffles me even more is that they have a tip jar set out in your face while you order. Considering they have terrible service, this food is definitely over priced. When you order tenders you get 3 measly tiny pieces (the size of jumbo shrimp). I wouldnt mind paying the price if the rude service didnt make me lose my appetite so quickly for it. They need to stop hiring snooty teenage girls with attitudes because essentially, they are the face of this company. To top it off its always dirty inside, looks like the cashiers only get paid to give attitude and stand there to look pretty.

I grew up in what is basically southern Georgia. Lots of Dixie flags, people who marry their cousin (only second cousins and later; we’re not from West Virginia), and that gourmet of all foods “Fried Chicken”! I’ve been looking for some good chicken here in Texas; harder then you think. I am happy to report that I’ve found a good example that has kept me coming back. Chicken Scratch (CS) is next to “The Foundry” a glorified beer nerds paradise. Get your fried chicken here get your beer there. What more do you need? Well its not in the best area, but the food is worth the trip. CS has two major offerings. 1. Fried Chicken 2. Rotisserie Chicken. I will admit that I have only had the fried, so this review is based only on that. Skillet fried by the way is their unique twist on their chicken. It’s a slightly sweet breading they use, and a welcome change. The chicken comes out in aluminum plates and not much else. Make sure to also ask for collards, and biscuits – They are really good. There are a few items that need some work. The Mac and Cheese, and the biscuits and gravy were forgettable; but why was I ordering them anyway? Make sure to order the main events, friend chicken, collards, and biscuits. That’s why you come here, that is what to order.

Some of my 27 year old sons friends from High School that we know were playing and we were invited to listen to them at The Foundy / ChickenScratch. It was not at all what I expected. We arrived around 7pm on Friday evening. The valet parking was a surprise, but turned out to be a wise choice. It was a great outdoor patio venue with picnic tables under large trees with misters and fans cooling the place down. Very Austinesque. Friends directed us to the Chicken Scratch order window inside a small adjacent building. Having never eaten there before I ordered a half pecan roasted chicken, some fried chicken fingers, and Cabbage Jimica slaw. I gotta say I simply could not get over how GOOD it all was. I was slurping the vinegary dressing out of the bottom of the slaw container and sucking on the bones of the "half-bird" roast chicken and wanting more. By then the wait for more chicken was an hour. No worries. I called in an order for pickup Saturday and we ate more of that wonderful fare all weekend. I should add that, at my sons recommendation, I ordered the mac-n-cheese Saturday and it disappeared at the first meal. Truly great food in a fun atmosphere. Im getting ready to reorder takeout right now and planning to go back with friends.

I love Chicken Scratch! I loved the atmosphere of the place; most seating is outside, but they have fans to keep you cool as you eat. I eat chicken all the time, but this chicken was the best Ive had! Something about the spices in the breading of the chicken tenders and the way they cook it is different than other places. It was incredible! Although I am an adult, I got a kids meal for $8 and it turned out to be a great deal! You get two chicken tenders, a side (mac&cheese, fries, or a salad), a homemade soda (also very good) and a popsicle! You get a little bit of everything in this meal at such a great price. Buying these things separately would probably be over $15 (for example, a popsicle is $3 on its own). I would definitely recommend and hope to go again soon! For those students out there, I would even say this is a great place to study! I was there during the busiest dinner hours, and although everyone was eating outside, I was not bothered by noise or by crowd. Its a great place!
