Hyde Park is about as local as you can get and theyve been serving their dishes up for quite some time. Often the fries are brought up with much fanfare...but what most dont know or just dont have the guts to actually order is the dish called the Horseshoe. The Horseshoe is not for the faint of heart, but is for the diehard foodies that are looking for some "indulgence" food to sink their chops into. This bad boy features a foundation of Texas toast, a half pound of sirloin grilled to order, a smothering of cheese sauce...then piled on top is a heap of Hyde Park fries, which are topped with more cheese sauce, diced tomatoes and scallions. Thats right menu light weights, the Horseshoe is coming for you...hide the salmon, the salads, and pasta. The Horseshoe is a Texas heavyweight likely to beat your hunger and stomach into submission. Respect the beef, kids. Oh and while youre at it...you should order an additional side of extra cheese sauce like we do...unless of course youre too busy running home and cryin like a baby from the sheer intimidation and fright. For a local, sit down, non trailer meal this is the spot for you!

Ive been fries hunting for a while now and heard this place had some killer fries. Ordering a small Hyde Park fries for two, they were some of the most delicious fries Ive ever had. The sauce that comes with it is indeed killer. I didnt think a small order of fries would be enough for two, but man they stuff that plate full of fries. Wanting to try something light, I went with the Blackened Fish Tacos. Although very delicious, I guess two tacos isnt enough for me to get full. I saw a waiter bring a huge plate full of Chicken Fried Chicken and mashed potatoes to the table next to me, which made me regret getting the fish tacos. Im definitely getting the Chicken Fried Chicken next time. Ive also tried the Chicken Salad Sandwich and its good as well. Advice: This place gets really busy during peak hours (I waited 35 minutes around 6:30pm). I recommend going 30 minutes earlier than you planned.

Today was #nationalfrenchfryday so I decided to come here since I heard they were rated top 10 & top 20 by Food Network and Food & Wine magazine for their fries. Came during a busy dinner hour and was seated in less than 10 minutes. The ambiance is relaxed and laid back. I got the Avocado Pepperjack BLT with a side of their famous fries. The sandwich - delicious! Only $9.99! Not too much bread, there was a good amount of filling of the ingredients, and the sandwich is a good size overall. They only sell it on Thursdays, so make sure to come then! The fries - I wouldnt say theyre the best out there, but they were pretty good in taste; very crunchy and have a good flavor due to being dipped in buttermilk. It all depends on your preference. Their dipping sauce was very complimentary as well. I had amazing service by my waiter and left pretty satisfied, Id come back again!

Great food & atmosphere, really bad bartenders , they looked like they did not want to be there, only talked to their friends, ignored alot of other people waiting to get a drink or needed refills. i saw several customers come from the dinning area to the bar for drink refills and the bartender had to wash wine glasses to keep up with the demand because they did not have enough wine glasses...lol , my friend had to refill his own glass. The manager was really nice, say hi and making small talk to customers, but could have done more to support the incompetent barkeeps. I left a tip because i felt sorry for the guy and will try to never go back on a Sat. night . But this is a really nice laid back place with good food with potential to be great....oh yeah, dont get take out or anything to go, they will nickle & dime ya for extras stuff....be kewl;-)

Regulars at Hyde Park, but were surprised by the poor quality and tastlessness of the items we ordered. The creamed corn was nothing more than a can of corn with some cream added and cold. The crab and red potato fried appetizer was very tough outside and inside held a scalding hot liquid that burned my mouth even though it had sat on my plate for quite some time after being sliced into bites. The dip for the crab/potatoes was a pour buttermilk dressing that had no other flavor than the buttermilk which was quite stout. No seasoning. I could have had better out of my refrigerator but the ice tea was the best in town. Will eat there once again in hopes this was just a bad friday night. Good luck.

Hyde Park Bar & Grill is one of those local Austin restaurants that everyone will tell you to try. I will have to join the bandwagon on this one. If youre looking for a menu filled with hearty entrees, you have found it in Hyde Park Bar & Grill. I had the Horseshoe Sandwich when I went here. I had never even heard of such a thing before. It was incredibly delicious. The main claim to fame for me was their french fries. I think that they double fry them. Whatever it is, they are amazing. I havent yet been for brunch, but Ive heard this is one of the best places to go, so I would recommend giving it a try for weekend brunch. No matter the date or time, your tastebuds wont be disappointed.

Nestled in the residential, quaint area of Hyde Park, right next to a cheese specialty shop (bonus points). This is a great place to go if you are looking for a small restaurant with a laid-back, unpretentious style. I have to go back to try their Mon/Tues special-- Tonys Southern Fried Chicken, served with Green Chile & Cheese Mashed Potatoes and your choice of 1 side--for 11 bucks. The Saturday/Sunday brunch from 11 AM-3 PM is fantastic. The Migas and Huevos Rancheros are my favorite, but I also need to try their customizable Belgian Waffle or Pancake Platter. Also, $3 Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and Screwdrivers during brunch.

Nothing special, but consistent and yummy. I HEART fried egg sandwiches and they have a great version. I skip the ham. Drinks are decent, too. And since its in walking distance from my house the loyalty card has come in handy many times! The decor is...hard to define. A mix of eclectic art on the walls and Elks clubs of yore. Go here if you are searching out reliable comfort food and leave any foodie snobs at home. Skip any attempts on the menu at non-traditional American (just say no to the pasta, trust me) and go with the familiar. They claim their fries are the best in Austin. I disagree, but I dislike battered fries.

Weve been going to Hyde Park for years, but well not be going back after our experience tonight. New menu doesnt include some old favorites--like the vegetable plate--and entrees arent even served with a side. When we asked for a roll (or something similar) we were told they dont have rolls. They had "texas toast" but no rolls. So let me get this straight. Youre fancy enough to require diners to purchase all sides a la carte, but then the only bread you have is texas toast? Seems to me as if HPBG is undergoing an identity crisis. Theyd do better to get back to their roots: good food, no pretensions.
