Ive gone to Don plenty of times and seen it evolve from food truck to restaurant. Many aspects have changed and sacrifices had to be made along the way. The Don food truck was great. The food was consistently top notch and I loved being greeted by the owners each time. The only drawback was wait time. The line would always be super long and they didnt have a way of taking orders and getting food out at the same time. Now that theyve moved and opened a restaurant, theyve improved wait times immensely. However, I barely see the original owners anymore. The prices have gone up, food quantity have decreased, and quality has become inconsistent at times. Dont get me wrong, food is still great and my friends who try Don for the first time love it. However, Im beginning to see carelessness. For the owners (if you read this): I urge you to remember your roots and focus on quality control first. Your goal, if I remember correctly, was to provide cheap but great Japanese food. I think that has gotten lost somewhere along the way. When I get pork cutlet that has varying thickness, I believe its time that the balance between speed and quality needs to be reassessed. I only write this long of a review because I care about this place. For new customers: Please dont let this review detract from the experience or push you away. Don is still awesome and worth trying. Even with its shortcomings now, Im still giving it a high rating. --4.25 stars

Definitely overhyped. Dont get me wrong, the pork is delicious and I love the spicy mayo, however for $6+tax for the Don its simply not worth it. At that price point youre basically paying for the pork cutlet because theres barely enough rice to cover the bottom of the box. If youre a frugal college student, you probably already know that you could make the pork cutlet and double, if not triple the amount of rice at home for less than $3. To make this place remotely worth it, youd have to take your meal home and add your own rice (which is another -albeit minor- cost to you). But I get it, not all of us have time to make food at home while working or going to school. Therefore, an advice from one college student to another, if you want to make good use of your money and still want to eat out, I recommend you just go next door to either Halal Bros or In-n-Out.

Fast, high quality food at an affordable price! Seriously every time I go, I wait less than five minutes for me food (faster than fast food!) Dons gives generous portion sizes at a price point that any hungry college kid can get behind ($6 for what I get). But they dont skimp on quality with these portion sizes and I keep coming back due to the consistently great food: I get the number two with avocado and spicy mayo every time and they perfectly combine well seasoned savory chicken sauced in a sweet savory teryaki glaze with crunchy shallots and lettuce all served over a bed of rice. And the spicy mayo (optional) gives it a creamy kick. All in all, its the perfect affordable meal packed with plenty of protien and flavors served to you by an always welcoming staff!!

Yummy Japanese food! Just as good, if not better, as when they were a food truck! Great serving size for the price. Theres usually a line here, but worry not, it goes pretty quickly. Only downside is that there isnt a lot of seating if you have a large group. Also: parking is pretty rough, so walk if you can or be prepared to walk a bit. But overall 10/10!

First of all the food and staff are great , but why did they pick a place with no parking ? It seems like the food truck next to dons is jealous and will call to get your car booted. I Literally went in to place my order and came out to my car booted smh. I love dons, but I wish they made it convenient for people who dont live around there.

One of my all-time favorite restaurants in Austin. Ive been going since the truck was on 28th and Guad. I love the new restaurant, the vibes, and the staff. (Ed, dont think we havent noticed the smaller portions, and is there any way we can make the wasabi mayo more wasabi-y and less mayo-y?) Love you guys. Highly, highly recommend.

The kitchen puts out food VERY fast. The dishes come plenty packed with food so there are no worries on whether or not youll be hungry afterward. The only complaint I really have is the lack of seating, though thats not really much of an issue since every order is made to-go. Make sure to try to sauces too, they are very good.

weeks ago, I would have given this place 5/5. but since then, friend of mine got poisoned by ordering the poke, and i got under cooked chicken (pink in the middle). edit: at first, I thought this place was slipping. But I still find myself coming back here a lot. i still like this place a lot.

Great food and atmosphere. Theyre very quick at bringing out the food, and the cost is is worth the amount and quality you get. This is a great place for college students, but it can get crowded, so there may not be seats available. If its your first time, then get the don.

Great food, good music, and awesome atmosphere overall. They really turned the location around! Walking there is the best option since parking is hard to find close by and the lot next door will tow you or boot you after 5 minutes. They have no mercy.

Glad they moved to brick and mortar. Dont have to stand in line for an hour in the heat and rain anymore. Great food. Great price. The owners name is Edward, and hes a very cool person. I didnt like the takoyakis though.

The food was excellent! So tasty and the size serving was not bad at all!! I will be ordering extra rice next time just because they have a good amount of meat in it!

Delicious and the line is way better than when they were just at a food truck. The inside also had nice murals and you get a lot of food for a good price.

Pork belly that melts in my mouth? Yes please. It seemed to be better when it was a food truck, but maybe i just came on the wrong day.

NO PARKING at Don. I wish the sign for NO PARKING was BIGGER. I had to paid $150 ticket to remove the boot.
