I am new in town. Every culture has its coffee customs. I love getting acquainted with local coffee shops. I went in and waited at the register nearly 5 minutes before I was acknowledged. Then when I ordered my TO GO drink, the clerk asked me if I was going to sit down AT ALL.. I mentioned that I had my dog and would be walking him around but may sit. I had my little guy tied to a bench by the parking lot and thought maybe Id sit there for a minute with him. The Barista then told me I had to go sit on the patio and order from a full service waitress.. Confused, I walked away and found a seat on the patio. The ground, table and other chair were covered with salsa and there were puddles of water stretching across a big part of the patio which I carried my dog over. At the table I waited another 3 or 4 minutes before I was over it. I was looking for my first cup of morning coffee.. My patience wasnt high. As I noticed a waitress taking a food order, I realized that I could likely walk all the way to the coffee bean and have my coffee faster. As I turned to leave the waitress smiled (the first smile I was given all day despite my smiles to the barista) and so I thought Id give it one more go.. I asked her if I was allowed to order a coffee at the bar inside and she said "I will tell him its okay" then we walked back in to find a line at the counter.. The waitress began speaking with the other people in the line and apparently forgot about me. Im sitting on the bench in front of the coffee bean and tea leaf enjoying my Mocha as I type this. I feel like I missed out on something great because the vibe seemed awesome and I love buying local over a chain. And I am staying right next door to this place.. If I give this place another chance I suppose it will have to be in the afternoon, when Im already settled into my day. It was an epic fail attempting to get my morning coffee from them. An establishments policies on which server gets the sale or tip getting in the way of the customers experience is a systemic break down. I hope they fix this and just let people attempting to order coffee to go, do so with ease.

There is definitely a major quality control problem at this restaurant. I have eaten here many times when family comes into town, but the last two visits have been extremely disappointing to say the least. A few weeks back I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy and everything was pretty good except one of my two biscuits was basically dough. It was way undercooked when I cut into it, yet the other was fine. It was very odd! The waiter offered an English muffin instead, which seemed like an acceptable response. Now just a week ago I went with my family (our usual go-to breakfast place), and three of the 4 of us ordered coffee to drink. Our waiter brought our full cups of coffee and we added our normal fixings, had several top offs throughout our meal. It wasnt until the third top of where my cup was half empty when I stirred in some sugar that my spoon pulled up not one but TWO opened Splenda packets at the bottom of my cup. We were all absolutely disgusted. HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN. Did they just miss the fact that there were two used packets of Splenda at the bottom of my cup? Dont you have to look at the cup when youre pouring coffee!? I brought it to our waiters attention and he took my cup allegedly to the manager, and then came back asking if there was something he could do... we were all too stunned and disgusted still and didnt say anything. When we got the bill he hadnt even comped for the coffee, which we thought at the very least he would do. You shouldnt have to ask for that when clearly a dirty cup was used. Before this all even happened both my mom and I ordered Biscuits and Gravy which were completely cold, however, we never complained because the rest of our plate (eggs & bacon) were fine and sometimes that happens. Thats it for us, Austin Java. You lost some loyal customers. Well continue to share this experience also. Its just really disappointing.

I have eaten at Austin Java many times over my 10 year residency of Austin, but lately Ive been coming in with my hopes high and leaving with my satisfaction low. During my most recent visit, I made the mistake of sitting at the bar to avoid the long wait for a table. The experience at the bar itself was normal. The service was a bit slow, but I was not in a hurry that day so I did not mind. What was so terrible about my experience was that from my perch, I could see directly into the kitchen and what I saw was just sad. The kitchen was filthy and line cooks were handling food in ways that I am sure a health inspector would frown upon. Because I am not a germ-aphobe and I was starving, I happily ate my food anyways which consisted of 2 eggs and a blueberry pancake. It was all mediocre at best and I ended up feeling sick the rest of the day from barely cooked eggs and Im sure unwashed blueberries in my belly. While I will not say I would "never" visit Austin Java again, I will say it is definitely not my first choice and one I will skip over in the future if I have a say in where I eat.

The service was ok. This was my first time at this place. We wont be going back. We ordered out good and three people ordered the biscuits and gravy, when the good came out 2 of the three werent complete. They ran out of gravy. Most restaurants let you know BEFORE the plates are made that there is no more of what you have ordered. The waitress came and let us know, that they ran out, that we could keep the hard biscuits and the eggs and we could order anything else on the menu and it would be on the house. WELL... come time to pay the checks they were all messed up. We had two separate checks. They still charged I for what else we ordered, even though it was supposed to be on the house. THEN as we were leaving we see the manager, instead of being sympathetic and apologizing, we let her know it would have been nice to know that what we ordered wasnt we were going to get, she says very rudely, a dont keep track of what we make so we dont know when we run out. I will NEVER go back to this location. We paid over 160 dollars here and it wasnt worth the headache in the end. #thanksbutnothanks

Ive been coming here for over three years and it had consistently been one of my favorite places in Austin. Lately (We come at least three times a month) the food has been inconsistent in its quality... Now they have shifted from a traditional sit down restaurant style to a grab a menu and stand in line type of place. If you need something else during your meal you now have to go back and stand in line to reorder and repay. You no longer have a waiter/waitress to help you or get items that may not have come out with the order. I got up several time to go order another drink only to face a long line...I can only imagine what a cluster this will be on the weekend when you have a hundred people in line trying to order. This was a bad move on behalf of management to think this would do anything but irritate long time customers who enjoyed coming here to relax and enjoy good food in a nice setting. Austin seems to have a trend lately of diminishing customer service/experience. I doubt well be coming back again...might as well go eat and order from a food trailer down the road.
