I have always loved Publix, I drive out of my way to shop at the Publix on my own side of town and always look for one when I am visiting others. However, yesterday I had such a petty, annoying experience that I havent been able to stop thinking about it. The Publix on Pelham is near my childs school and after dropping him off following a doctors appointment he asked me to come back to have lunch with him. I ran to Publix to pick up a sub from the deli. I have been ordering veggie subs at Publix for the 15 years that I have lived in the area, I always ask for extra sharp cheddar and under normal circumstances (i.e., in every other Publix I have ever been in) they slice some for me. Today, the clerk made it perfectly clear that she had no intention of giving me what I ordered and she pointedly grabbed the pre sliced, boring, mild, yellow cheddar that looked as though it had been sitting around for a while. She then proceeded to cut two *tiny* slices in half and put them on the sandwich -- making no attempt to so much as cover the entire area of the bread with cheese. Given that this is a vegetarian sandwich there isnt much more to it than cheese and vegetables -- I guess that she was assuming that I was paying for a roll stuffed with lettuce. I asked for more cheese. She glared at me -- and I do mean glared at me (I felt like Oliver asking "please sir, may I have some more."). She finally said, "how much do you want, it is 50 cents a slice." She seriously charged me for two tiny 2 by 4 inch slices of cheese while the woman next to her made another customer a turkey sandwich with an inch thick slab of sliced turkey. By contrast 2 scant pieces of cheese pales in monetary comparison, it would probably cost them 20 cents to put enough cheese on my bread to cover it. Meat eating customers, on the other hand, apparently have a right to actually have non vegetable substances on their sandwiches... oh, and they get the vegetables that I get too! Such luxery! When I paid for my sub I ended up spending about $7 (sandwich only, no drink, chips, etc.). In other words, I paid more than the woman with the turkey sub, more than I would have paid at a high end sandwich shop. I tried to speak to the deli manager but was told that "there was no manager there today." No one asked me why I wanted to speak to the manager, gave me the managers name, told me when the manager would be in or asked me for my phone number/email/etc -- as people who work at stores that actually care whether or not they have customers return. By this time, I was running late to meet my child, but I was so put off by the sheer pettiness of Publix that I decided that I would quickly share a word about my experience with the store manager. Unfortunately, he was having a discussion with either another customer, or some long lost family friend, it wasnt clear which, Id vote friend. He didnt do so much as wave to me to acknowledge that he knew I was waiting for him. Never, never, never, never again. I will buy lunch at my kids school rather than pay restaurant prices to be treated like a demanding child for asking that my food actually contain the food for which I am paying. I plan to share this story with the manager of my own Publix, Im sure that he will be amused, given that he would die of embarrassment rather than allow a customer to be treated in such a petty, cheap and humiliating, and condescending manner.

Long review but worth the read! I love the Publix Wheat Italian 5 grain bread that you can only purchase in the bakery. This store started having a problem keeping in on the shelf. After the 3rd week of not being available and complaining in-store, I filed a complaint with the Publix home office. The store manager called me and we worked out a solution where a loaf of this bread would be baked every Sunday for me as a "special order." That worked for a couple weeks until this past Sunday when I asked for my bread and was told, while the clerk was holding my special order paperwork in her hand, that they werent going to bake it that day.No explanation why, just that it wasnt going to happen. I completed my shopping and on the way out told the manager on duty why I wouldnt be shopping at their store any longer. I then came home and once again complained to corporate. That was Sunday. Yesterday, Tuesday, my doorbell ran and there stood the Publix manager hold 2 loafs of Wheat Italian 5 grain bread for me. He explained the comedy of errors that kept my bread from being available on Sunday and made me a promise that anytime from now on when for whatever reason my bread wasnt available, he would PERSONALLY deliver a loaf to me as soon as possible. It that amazing customer service or what???? I never said I was going to stop shopping at Publix, in fact, I told the manager on duty that morning as well as in my email to corporate that I would just be going to another location, so to me this gentleman went above and beyond to keep my business. This is my neighborhood grocery store (yes I said groceries) Everyone is courteous, smiling and helpful - from the manager and produce guys, right down to the cashiers and bag boys - always clean and bright and shiny - I love that when you ask them if they stock something or you cant find what youre looking for they stop what they are doing and walk with you to find your item (instead of telling you the aisle and waving you in the general direction - hate that) cant say enough nice things about this store and the company in general - NO MORE BI LO!

They all strive to be the best and are truly helpful. I appreciate that they insist on unloading my cart as well as taking my purchases to the car. They are friendly and the store is clean. It would be perfect but for one thing, I can buy something in the deli dept deli case and when I open it a few days later at home it will have mold on it. I never complained to the store, perhaps I should have. I still give them 5 stars because they are head over heals better than the awful shopping experiences I always get at any and all BiLo stores.

I go to this store on almost a daily basis and everyone, including Diane, are the nicest people out there. Everyone tries to help you in any way they can. Its truely an awesome shopping experience. My groceries get rung up quickly and if I need it, I always get offered help out to my car, in this 90+ heat, thats saying a lot about them caring about there customers. I would recommend this Publix to anyone in the area, thats "wise enough" to know good customer service when they see it.

1 star for my cashier this morning who made several racist comments to and about coworkers right in front of me. These were inappropriate things to say in any work environment, but to say them while working with a customer is truly incomprehensible. As the customer, I am making the choice to no longer shop at this location.
