As vegans, Chen restaurant was our favorite to get takeout when we were in Reading until we moved 2 years ago. Last Sunday, we were in the area and we couldnt wait to have another meal from Chen. It did not turn out well. Although the front of the menu says "not oily", our malayasian pancake was swimming in oil. Our three entrees were one worse than the other. The General Tsos chicken was inedible - it could not be chewed due to overcooking. The eggplant chicken was bad flavor (our son said that my own version is MUCH better) The smoked teriyaki seitan was flavorless. Yes, the owners are VERY nice, but our meal was not good at all. I really wish I could say something good (Wait now, the sugar cane drumsticks were tasty.) Wish I did not have to write this review, but it was a sad night of eating in our house and I threw away the takeout menu. Would like to try again, but $50.00 is too much to spend on disappointment.

If youre looking for healthier Chinese food in the Reading area, I recommend Chens. We are fairly new customers to this business (new vegetarians as well) and we always enjoy the food. I like that their dishes arent as oily as I tend to find in other Asian cuisine restaurants. The soy imitation meat is good. It might not convince meat eaters or recent vegetarians but its enjoyable. Plus they dont go overboard with sodium. The owners gave us a very warm welcome when we told them we were new customers. Since then, they have been so polite every time we visit. We appreciate the good food and service, and will be back for more.

Walking into Chens Vegetarian House, I thought that they carried a variety of vegan/vegetarian dishes along with standard meat dishes. When I ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai, I was curios as to why they served me imitation/soy shrimp only to find out later that night that they only carried soy imitation meats! That being said, it changed my opinion on the restaurant that it is truly vegetarian and it is well worth the visit for something different. The food is also quite good and relatively cheap.

Had lunch here after our morning walk at wyomissing creek. First time here and I was honestly hesitant. We were promptly seated by a nice host. She was wonderful and asked if it was our first time. I got the sesame chicken and hubby got the Shang hai noodles. Both dishes were amazing! We also got the Malaysian pancakes which were yummy. Abit greasy for me but it was good. The fresh watermelon juice is a must!!! Get the juice while you can for the season! This is a must for us the next time.

This place gives us a stellar meat-free American-Chinese food option. The menu options are plentiful, delicious and served with a smile and genuinely friendly demeanor. Personal favorites are their General Tso, crispy spring rolls, and Chicken Lo Mein. Only warning is that if youre dining in, be prepared to smell like the oil your spring rolls were cooked in due to the open floor plan (the kitchen and dining areas share the same space).

I had the Orange Flavored Beef with brown rice. It was so delicious! The "beef" was crispy and very convincing. I feel like some imitation beefs are just bland pieces of gluten, but this "beef" was flavorful and had great texture. The whole dish had a nice kick to it, without being too spicy. The owners seemed very kind. Even though its an hour away from my stomping grounds, I will definitely be returning.

Great tasting Asian vegetarian. The sauces are well-crafted with a nice depth of flavor and there is plenty of variety! Dishes come with a variety of mock-meats, tofu, or just veg. The broad noodles are awesome and the veg in the curry is expertly cooked (perfect amount of crunch). Cant wait to come back!

Unique is the best word to describe Chen. It wont knock your socks off, but the flavors, textures, and choices all add up to five stars. Some things dont translate quite well as veggie dishes, while others equal or exceed their meat equivalent. Its definitely worth a visit.

Affordable, and delicious. Its a small family-run place-- the owners are relaxed and welcoming. I feel healthy eating their food, and the menu feels very familiar to other non-vegetarian Asian places.

Its more of a take out restaurant, not too much seating inside but the food is fantastic. Couldnt even tell the soy chicken was soy. And they have a nice juice selection as well.

Vegetarian food but comes pretty close to tasting meat. Had chicken nuggets and shrimp roll both made just out of tofu.. Tasted very good. Good service too.
